Acer.Scarlett stole the show on day one of Red Bull Battle Grounds New York, making it to the semi-finals in dramatic fashion. After losing to all-in master PartinG in her first match, the Canadian Zerg earned a second chance at advancement by taking out Golden in the losers match. Even then her chances seemed slim as she faced the accomplished veteran Bomber, a player who had previous thwarted her progress in WCS tournaments.
Their first two matches were reminiscent of their WCS clash in Cologne, Germany, with Bomber taking one game with suffocating reaper-hellion pressure, and Scarlett hitting back with muta-ling-bane swarms in game two. In game three, things went absolutely insane (Watch the VOD!!!).
Playing on the unique Red Bull map of Habitation Station, the early game started strangely with Bomber's proxy barracks getting scouted out and Scarlett going for a zergling counter. When everything settled down, Scarlett seemed to have an advantage as she had secured her third at the gold-mineral base. However, the tables turned once Bomber's 3/3 upgrades kicked in, and Scarlett slowly found herself falling behind as Bomber took more efficient engagements. With Bomber barreling in and taking out Scarlett's hatcheries, the Acer Zerg was forced into a base trade on what seemed like unwinnable terms: no expansions vs. a Terran with mules.
Yet, Scarlett had one desperation ploy to keep her tournament hopes alive. Pressing the burrow research button late into the game, Scarlett decided to gamble on getting devastating baneling landmine hits. She would hit the jackpot. Bomber, perhaps overconfident in his position, or perhaps just unable to account for all possibilities in the chaos, took the bait and chased Scarlett's troops around the map. Juicy clusters of marines walked straight over Scarlett's banelings and burst like overripe fruit. With two hits taking out 90% of his force, Bomber was forced to concede defeat.
Meanwhile, all three Protoss players in SKT_PartinG, Woongjin_sOs, and SK_MC made their way to the semi-finals as well.
WCS 2013 champion sOs was particularly impressive, being the only player on the day to advance to the semis without even dropping a map. PartinG proved he was still dangerous in his return to the international tournament scene, all-inning with his usual precision and surviving Bomber's unorthodox hellbat-bio composition. And finally, the king of prize money hunter in MC made it through, exploiting the strength of void rays to overcome HyuN and become the final semifinalist.
I don't get how scarlett stars?! sOs played great Starcraft, and has again proven he is a force. Scarlett beat the worst Zerg (golden) and barely skated by on Bomber's own mistakes... come on..

Nowhere does it say she did better than sOs or parting, it actually says "Acer.Scarlett stole the show on day one" and that's all the title is implying
I was there for game 3 of Bomber v Scarlett and the went NUTS for those bane hits. It was such a great series to watch. Bomber left his booth and went right to the lobby to sign autographs. It was a tough way to lose, so I he obvs didn't look too happy taking pics and signing : /

His point is "Scarlett stars on day 1 of red bull NYC" would imply she did something particularly amazing today. I believe a small upset vs Bomber in addition to the expected loss to parting + win against golden in the way she did them are not particularly amazing or unexpected
If she did about as well as we expected her, why did she steal the show?

How is it a small upset in beating Bomber? Also Scarlett vs Bomber g3 was the best game the whole day. She definitely stole the show for the day I dunno how you see different.... sOs did as expected MC made a slight upset over Hyun Parting did as expected
I was at the event in like the front and the electricity in the crowd was AMAZING. When she landed that final Baneling mine everyone just erupted out of their seats! I hope they have that on video that crowd was siiiiiiiick. NYC all day :D

Because everyone went absolutely insane with the way she won game 3? You talk as if you hadn't seen it and only care about the results. It's not about the results but about the show. This type of intense back-and-forth game rarely happens in SC2, but was a regular occurrence in BW. She managed to come out on top in a game like that, beating one of the best Korean Terrans in the world. She stole the show. It was expected of sOs to crush through his opponents. One-sided games aren't as exciting and that's why we see Scarlett vs Bomber as the #1 highlight of the day.

You don't fluke a Blizzcon title
That's neither here nor there. Lots of people disagreed with you, and the casters today obviously felt the need to say time after time that 'here we have irrefutable proof that it wasn't a fluke.'
There were lots of notable stories today, from Scarlett's upset, to sOs re-asserting himself, to the semis being Protoss dominated.
I really hope MC uses a reasonable PvP opening tomorrow. He plays such solid PvZ and PvT. But then he uses inferior PvP builds like 4 gate (vs. Dear in WCS) or cannon rushes (vs. SoS). He isn't really giving himself a chance. I would like to see gate/core/expo/robo/gate/gate or DT drops, or 3 gate oracle openings from him.

Just because the casters said it doesn't make it true, also who's this "everyone" you're talking about? Anyone that has watched sOs play ever since his top 4 at wcs kr s1 and 2nd place at s1 finals knows he's a great player(maybe not great but a good player player from those events, a great player after winning the global finals), in fact even if he didn't win the Global Finals I would still rate him above everyone in the group he was in.

The TL news article about sOs's victory is called "the greatest story never told." I don't know if you were on here that night, but every troll was out of the woodwork calling him a faceless, cheesy patch Toss. There's a reason the casters were saying it: lots of people - ignorant though they might have been - had been thinking it.
The only thing that disappointed me about today was Bomber signing immediately after the game he lost. It was so sad seeing him trying to be there happy to see the fans, but was clearly just so distraught. I mean, I understand there was a schedule to keep, but honestly he could have signed the next day, or way later in the might. Otherwise it was a great show put on by RedBull and I look forward to tomorrow.
You, sir, are not only a champion at Liquibet, but a champion - period. Oh, Canada!
EDIT: But I'm still cheering for sOs
Cam Connor, from Winnipeg, scored for the Montreal Canadiens in double overtime on a goal that eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1979 playoffs.

When someone wins a series by all inning everyone endlessly and another player wins by expertly detonating a baneling MINEFIELD the latter player stole the goddamn show, people.
Great games today I thought, the intensity of the Scarlett v Bomber game made it amazing. Elimination series, elimination match, already has people tense, and then add in a base trade with such small margins to earn victory and it's just wayyy too intense not to call it the game of the day. I mean the other games were good but we didn't get an amazing series like that one from anyone else. sOs just too good to get close series
I don't want to downplay Scarlett's win, but Bomber for some reason never bothered getting his economy running (rebuilding lost SCVs and expanding). It's kind of painful to watch as a terran player. Either he was overconfident and thought he could win with only marines and no economy or he was just so focussed on the gold base that he forgot everything else.

Wouldn't you feel that you could push to end the game when you are mining slightly from a third and mining heavily from a gold base and your opponent has nothing but long-distance mining? I think he was justified in attempting to apply relentless pressure until victory. The only real mistake he made, in my view, is not making medivacs, as the lack of healing made his marines trade slightly less cost-efficiently against lings after each stim wore off.
Also, all three Innovation vs DRG games in season 3 round of 32 were better TvZ games, but this one takes a close 4th place. Probably deserves a top ten highlighting in the annual compendium of best games of the year.

I kind of agree. I guess bomber felt like he could definitely win so he didn't bother setting up defenses at his southern 3rd or reexpand to any new bases / continue scv production.

Scarlett let a game won in the first minute drag out which incidentally created a fantastic, tense and dramatic ending. But it's no where close to 'game of the year'.

I thought there were several other standouts for TvZ alone that put this one away. Namely:
Scarlett vs Dream (ATC finals on Red City)
MMA vs Jaedong (WCS s3 finals game 2 on Derelict)
Symbol vs Jjakji (HSC game 4 on Frost)
Byul vs Polt (WCS AM s3 finals game 4 on Derelict)
Although, at least a Zerg finally won in this one -_-;
Not really game of the year, If some random korean zerg played that game e.g.NSHFreaky people wouldnt call ti game of the year, just a good game. People get hyped easily which is fine, but need to stop exaggerating.

You're not hating, you're just spouting silly nonsense. Golden the worst Zerg? How do you be the "worst zerg" yet come first place at Red Bull Training grounds? Yeah she beat Bomber, even when she was long distance mining and he had a gold base and another base. Yeah, I guess beating Bomber isn't impressive, I mean, he only owns Zergs like Soulkey and Jaedong.

game of the year isn't defined by skill alone.
It wash´t simply because she was bad or something. She wash´t able to expand enough and get enough larvae to use all the money she got. Gold base added a lot of money and bombers pressure made it difficult to expand after the more or less failed 2-base muta.
Game 3 is what makes a really good game imo. There was chaos in that game, and I'm sure there was a lot of emotional strain on the players, making their decisions good and bad.
I absolutely loved Game 3, mistakes, and great decisions, and you never really knew who was gonna win. This is fantastic Starcraft. Not just some really well performed build order into a perfect transition and walkover with a deathball, which everyone pretty much hates here.
I dont get the haters, they whine about deathball preventing back and forth, then we have this awesome back and forth, and they still hate lol.

To me, your opinion is wrong.
It's all subjective (objective? the one where everyone thinks differently). I, being there at this event, think that this was the best game of starcraft ever played. I'm including Brood War, though to be fair I didn't see a lot of Brood War. Now does this make me wrong? I'm sure in the eyes of a lot of people it does, but I'd even go so far as to say that this was the best competitive match of any event I've ever seen no matter the sport. My opinion is likely wrong in the eyes of everyone else, doesn't make me any less right.
They both made mistakes, the games didn't play out at code s level perfection, but that made it an even more exciting game to watch. Combine that with the series as a whole which included a foreigner coming back from an 0-1 deficit to win 2 nailbitingly close games and you've got the best series played in sc2 ever in my opinion. Best is most entertaining, most fun, most exciting to watch in my opinion, which this was.

I don't think she realized how far ahead she was. I think it was an extremely tense moment (remember, this was essentially a cheese/counter cheese scenario that Bomber played really well against) and she was just caught up in the moment. It's also possible she's not confident in her ability to pull off that exact all-in against someone like Bomber, who tore Golden's all-ins apart earlier in the day.
Gratz to Scarlett on an amazing series! One of the best of the year! I do however think sOs deserved a bit more than the pitiful mention he got in this article since he was easily the best player on Day 1. In general, Group B was barely covered and Snute's name wasnt even mentioned outside the scorebox.

jaeh BOMBER ... one of the very best terrans and one of the big hitter in wcs ... beside bomber there is nearly no other terran higher ranked/skilled you could face ... and golden is not worse then snute
Bomber's decision making was not perfect in that last game but considering the peculiar situation both players were in entering the mid game they both played a good game regarding their execution and Scarlett holding on in that low economy situation against well microed 3-3 marines is not something we see often so clearly the last game was spectacular with a brilliant ending.
As a zerg I feel depressed nowadays and tbh I haven't played the game for 1-2 weeks now. On top of that playing frustration I also found myself quite bored by most pro games. Sure, there are some good games from time to time (someone here mentioned Taeja vs Innovation already) but the zerg games became more and more boring. Thanks to Scarlett I finally jumped out of my chair again. I was in a skype conversation while watching and I yelled at everyone even though nobody there even knows SC2 XD
On November 24 2013 12:42 argonautdice wrote: They all did well. But foreigners want a foreigner star. (And Canadians want a Canadian one :D)
While this is true, I think it's more than that. The exciting surprises to me were MC advancing over Hyun, and Scarlett advancing over Bomber. And the MC vs Hyun games were not especially interesting (lol, protoss makes mass void ray, zerg makes mass hydra, zerg loses). Well...ok, actually I take that back: the 6 oracle build is one that I hadn't seen before, and yeah, that was really cool to see. Probably one of the better games to watch from yesterday just for the new build. Scarlett vs Bomber, on the other hand, had pretty good game 1 and 2, and absolutely mind-blowing game 3.
On the other hand, sOs was expected to advance, and all of his games were really one-sided. PartinG was expected to advance, and...actually he had some close games and cool moves like the storm drops and sentry drops. Actually, yeah, PartinG vs Bomber was also noteworthy, partially for PartinG's play, but also for Bomber's (hellbats).
But yeah, I don't think there's much of a story to be told about sOs from yesterday. World champion shows up, outclasses some opponents. I'm sure he'll get a writeup if/when he wins the whole tournament like everyone is predicting.
Scarlett didn't make a hive in game three which bothered me, but holy crap man! That game three was a brilliant game to watch! Yes there were mistakes, but it was such a tense game, and scarlett took it in the end, which I totally wasnt expecting as I watched it.
He's like "Hell, I'll just go pure marine with like 2-3 mines or so and win" which makes terran look boring and imba. But those burrowed baneling hits were inevitable since the last oc was down. I think the game was nice, and due to casters and crowd really great - but a bit overhyped.
I am so glad I was able to attend this event in person. I was there for game 3 and the crowd just absolutely lost it when that landmine hit. As a Zerg player and a huge fan of Scarlett, it was just an absolutely amazing experience. We seriously need more e-sports events in NYC because this whole tournament was way too much fun.
