Acer.INnoVation is the same dominant player he always was - except in TvT.
by Zealously
It feels like just yesterday thatAcer.INnoVationwas an invincible robot, a nightmare for Zerg, a perfect SCV puller, and the best player in the world. More than perhaps any other player in the three-year history of SC2, Innovation looked almost unbeatable at his peak. He carried a last place Proleague team to a championship, made former GSL champions like Life and RorO look like jokes, and generally ruled with an iron fist. Even one monumental choke (the first and last time it would happen) against Soulkey in the Code S finals did little to blemish the fact that the first three months of HotS belonged to INnoVation and INnoVation alone.
His fall came with the hellbat nerf—a crippling blow to the hellbat-drop tactics that were the backbone of his TvT play. Without hellbat drops, INnoVation would have his path impeded by Terran after Terran, with the mirror-match up contributing to every single tournament elimination that followed after the patch. Each successive elimination slowly dimmed his aura of invincibility, each GG revealing more of his mortality. And though INnoVation no longer has that mystical aura, rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Yes, the overall win-rate after the hellbat-drop nerf shows a marked change, with INnoVation dropping to a 64.75% win rate from a previously jaw-dropping 72.58%. But a closer examination of the stats reveals that it really is just Terran vs. Terran holding INnoVation up. His winrate excluding TvT is still a bonjwa-esque 76.74%, actually UP a few percentage points from 73.86% before the hellbat patch.
The TvT hit INnoVation took from the hellbat patch is just that massive: he's down from an excellent 69.44% win rate to a dismal 36.11%. Going by just the numbers, it seems that INnoVation is just as unstoppable as before as long as he's not playing TvT.
Down in flames: INnoVation before and after the hellbat nerf.

Looking at the content of his games, we're led to a slightly different but altogether similar conclusion. Through adaptation and the help of a few minor buffs, Zergs have learned to somewhat handle Innovation's once unstoppable parade push and can occasionally steal a macro game off of him. On the other hand, INnoVation has become much better at stopping the baneling all-ins that were once his only weakness, leading to a similar win-rate on the whole. Meanwhile, as Protoss players have become rather adept at defending and playing for the late-game, INnoVation has remained a very strong TvP player by focusing on dealing damage in the early-mid game and adding SCV-pull timings to his arsenal.
Late game strength is what creates the image of invincibility, and it's true that INnoVation is currently lacking in that regard. But as MC has shown on countless occasions, or PartinG as showed at last year's WCS Grand Finals, as long as you win it doesn't matter how you win. INnoVation may no longer be the pure, Artosian ideal of a macro Terran player being cast on your LCD monitor, but against Protoss and Zerg he's just as strong as he was before.
The problem for INnoVation is Terran, seven of which have been gathered at Blizzcon aside from himself. If nothing else, Bomber, Maru, MMA, Polt, TaeJa, Mvp, and aLive are all superb TvT players. If INnoVation has spent this long time off honing his TvT, bring it up back up to par with his other match-ups, then he can take Blizzcon and begin his second reign. If not, he will continue on as a great but not transcendent player. That's a fine existence for 99% of the players in the world, but not for INnoVation, a player who has tasted what it's like to be utterly peerless. For him, the only thing to do is reach that spot again, and hold on to it for even longer.
INnoVation has been waylaid on his road to becoming the undisputed king of the Starcraft II scene, the Mvp of HotS. Winning the biggest Starcraft II tournament there is to win will bring him one colossal step closer to reaching that goal. It will mean more than having an absurd win rate, more than winning the Proleague, and more than winning the Season 1 finals. With this in mind, I believe that Innovation comes into Blizzcon with more determination than ever before.
Everything else this year has been qualifiers upon qualifiers for even more qualifiers, all for one ultimate tournament. Ultimately Blizzcon is what decides what we'll remember of 2013 in Starcraft. Blizzcon represents the chance to create a lasting legacy as the ultimate champion of 2013. The $100,000 first place prize is a huge motivator for sure, but INnoVation would have stayed with KeSPA if money was his primary goal.
Don't be fooled by INnoVation's disinterested demeanor and monotone voice, a certain interview lets us know that Innovation's ultimate goal is winning and proving to both himself and to the fans that he is the best player on the planet. Winning is what Innovation is all about. and nothing else will satisfy him. With an attitude like that, mark my words that INnoVation will make sure he is in the very best condition he can possibly be in coming into the WCS Finals, and he will play at the highest level possible at Blizzcon.
Despite everyone calling him a robot and personality-less, I believe Innovation is actually a very emotional player. Getting reverse-swept by Soulkey, losing to Maru in the OSL semis, getting eliminated early in the Season 2 finals by Taeja and Naniwa, it seems like these were examples of where Innovation got tilted.
Sure, it seems like Innovation's emotions appear to be a weakness, which might be why he's trying to suppress them and create this image of a emotionless machine. But don't be fooled, sometimes the ones that try to hide emotions are the most emotional of all.

It'll be quite fitting if there isn't an alive article at all....only for him to win the whole thing lol

No goddamnit, alive should get the sexiest most epic article ever with motherfucking fireworks, explosions and a theme song. And when I say explosions we're talking michael bay here
Innovation will have a great run at Blizzcon, even with a slumping TvT I think the stakes are too high for him to fall so easily if he does run into another Terran. I expect him to get top 4 at the least. He's just too good. It's so damn hard to predict anything past the round of 16 for this tournament though, it's incredibly stacked.

Alive shouldn't get an article. That would be funniest.

not gonna lie: I'm not a fan anymore. bogus always lived off the impression that he is the unstoppable, unmovable, unquestionable roboter who stomps anyone who dares to stand in his way. since blizzard nerfed his TvT, he lost that.

So you aren't a fan of him anymore because he doesn't win everything now?

well it's not only that he doesn't win. he loses. badly.

but the answer to your question is "yes".
well fans like you aren't really missed.
like it would change anything. still waiting for the "not a real fan"-card.

Being a fan of a player, to me, is different from just being impressed by a player when he wins

well it's just classical banwagoning, and those ppl are everywhere. Just gloryseekers who can't realize what's great about a player beyond winning.

But isn't that just semantics? having a positive attitude towards, rooting for, liking, wanting him to win when he plays. where do you draw the line? if anybody feels better he/she can easily replace "fan" with "liked" and be happy.

you don't appreciate inno, you appreciate players who win in a dominating fashion, good thing for you you can follow the dear train now. but considering how most ppl are unable to appreciate other skills from inno than is micro/macro it's not exactly surprising.

sorry, can't hop the deer bandwagon yet. MMA is playing
Innovation is the single most invincible SC2 player I've ever seen when he's playing well. I feel like if he hits form, he will destroy anyone. And I really hope he hits top form. Innovation FTW. Either him or MMA winning would be awesome.
I'm not positive, but Innovation only has 1 win against Taeja and that was in game 1 during the group stages of Season 2 Finals. It's going to be a hard road for him after his match against duckdeok

I really think people are underestimating inno.. He said he started losing because he was playing too many tournaments at once. With a quiet month or two of solid TvT training he could snap this! Go Innovation!!

I think Innovation will actually do decently in TvT during blizzcon, but will fall to a protoss.
Yeah, I think Innovation has completely adapted the Acer style of being good against everything except protoss. But we'll have to wait and see, I just know something super surprising is going to happen this tournament.

For some reason I don't think Innovation can win Blizzcon, he's shown too many chinks in his armor along the way. Season 1 I would've backed him to win anything but now hmmm... I doubt he's anywhere near favourite status but should still stand a good chance. Tbh I feel like at least 10 players stand a good chance of winning, Blizzcon is gonna be one hell of a tournament.
its almost impossible to predict any winners. some cases like mvp/alive/bomber.... who hasnt showed any results in last 2 months and almost dropping out of their premiers.... at s3 finals i realy thought that soulkey would wipe the floor with dear, like he did with trap and with rain in gsl. but boy... was i wrong.
The most impressive part about his rise in non-TvT win% is that it's an equally good sample size. It sucks to see that a player so good was hit so heavily by the nerfing of one unit. I'm sure it comes down to a little more than that. But it just goes to show that if you rely too heavily on one thing in this game -- "His fall came with the hellbat nerf—a crippling blow to the hellbat-drop tactics that were the backbone of his TvT play." -- you are going to experience A LOT of variance.
Hopefully, INnoVation has prepared with MMA. The TvT of MMA can rub off on him, and he can helps MMA in the other MU's. The Terran duo of Acer is quite strong to say the least.

Nah PvP was never about multitasking. Hellbat TvT was 100% multitasking. But it still sucked.
Define multitasking. Personally from playing all the races I felt like dealing with counter zealot warp ins in your main while executing your 4gate in his main was about equally "hard" from "microing" hellbat drops while defending against them.
I gotta tell ya, it was fun watching Innovation lose his mythical aura. the series against Mvp and months of hellbat abuse was kinda disgusting. but that doesn't matter now. we need a man like Innovation to slay the toss dragons.
Man, Innovation's drop to #2 might have been his greatest blessing, easily the luckiest draw (except maybe Polt's draw I think) though it's a nearly-all stacked-up tourney.. There's tough opponent on ro8 though I guess.. (unless Maru fails to stop those weirdest busts/all-ins from MC.. )
innovation could be a top contender but since there are so many terrans here i dont think he will make it. Even when he is playing great, he will be playing some of the best TvT players in the world. if he runs up against Taeja, Bomber or Maru or polt he is going to have one hell of a difficult match.
