Because Woongjin tried to reduce his salary and he didn't like it and no other team wanted to pay him the same amount Woongjin did.

Too many retirements. We should instead see the rise of new players.

The game is only 3 years old.

Sad.

Concider that these players aren't sc2 players only.
Their career for some of them is coming to an end at a time that wouldn't chock anybody if it was still broodwar.

ZerO was one of my favorite BW players, but this is for the better. After such a long and accomplished career he clearly does not have the fire to be who he was in BW. Would be nice for SRT if he gave that a shot.

God fuck fucking fuck shit fuck damn it fuck.

I was getting so excited when he made it into gsl and survived the first round T.T Hope he atleast goes into brood war. He was such an amazing player back in the days. Sadly one of my most memorable moments connected to zero is jangbi jangbanging the living shit out of him during the last bw osl, but zero has produced so many amazing games over the years.

Granted that I'm going ahead of the current turn of events with this, but;

Maybe SC2 will carry on in other regions, but it's definately already in the noose in Korea. And with Korea vanishing and becoming a sunken Starcraft-atlantis, none of the other regions are going to feel significant in terms of skill anyway. I already to an extent have this feeling with the Brood War vs. SC2, now it's going to be complete with the greatest portion of the SC2 proscene feeding the worms.

Gl ZerO, thank you for all your games =(

My favourite player of all time. Zero doesn't belong to SC2. I'm happy he's retiring. If he streams, his charm and his cute little face will bring all the balloons to the yard. I'm only sad that Soulkey and Zero have to split up.

Korea is similar to how it's always been except that KeSPA added 200 progamers, who had no say in the matter themselves. For most of them BW, not SC2, was the game of their life. These players that have had such long careers already in the game of their choice, were added to an ecosystem that already had problems supporting the ESF teams. It gets a little tiring to explain it over and over but none of this indicates that the Korean scene is able to support less than before. It always supported ~100 living in pro houses on little to no salary, not ~300 of which many well paid athletes.

What? Are you crazy? The Korean scene is already waaay oversaturated and you want even more players? Ofc it's sad to see people retiring all the time, but it really shouldn't be surprising. Oh and it actually has nothing to do with Sc2 dying.

I'm not saying it isn't sad that so many BW "legends" are retiring, but this has absolutely nothing to do with "SC2 is dying". Like Nazgul said, there are so many progamers in Korea as in Europe altogether... and many of them are progamers for 10 years, so it's not very surprising and really not so bad that some of 'em are retiring. Lets open the gates for new blood...!

All I see is ex-BW pros too used to being at the top and steadily payed for it, rather than the growth, change, and competition that a new game like SC2 brings.

He literally did not like being payed less, and found out the hard way that he's not worth as much in SC2 anymore.

IMO this is purely an ego thing, I dunno why everyone's kneejerk response is to jump on the #OMGSC2DED bandwagon.

What?
Too used to be at the top?
Did you ever watch Zero's BW debuts?

Yeah well, I am currently being paid X money in my job.
I would never ever accept a lower salary in the future from any other jobs...
That's pretty much normal professional life.

On topic - I have been changing my sig of favorite players too much recently So many retirements!

Hope he comes back to the glorious BW fold

These guys that were at the top of BW were fucking warriors that went through the toughest systems with no money available to them. Please have the dignity not to insult them when they decide they don't want to do it all over again in a game that they didn't choose to play.

Oh my god, ZerO is my favorite player , I really wanted to see him do well in SC2 T_T. This is so lame that he's retiring after never having made it to a gold medal, goddamn it Flash. I hope he does well, but it just sucks that I'll never see him at a foreign event D:, he would have been swarmed ;;

Nobody will ever use queens as well as you, ZerO...

They're two different sports nothing is about to die. Players who want to play BW certainly don't owe it to you to play SC2. Let people pick the games they want with devotion and passion and SC2 will be a lot better for it.

Hi Nazgul. I find your reply very valid, although my comment might've been misinterpreted. I didn't mean that Zeros retirement in particular would kill the scene, I just meant that it probably would just hurt the franchise if everyone in general ditched the game blizzard/kespa chose, and went to half/spare time bw

Of course, I also wish Zero well, and hope that he will find satisfaction with whatever he will now do

Fake it till you make it is the philosophy behind SC2 esports. It worked well at the start, but now people are seeing the game for what it really is.

A great game that every BW pro might not want to play. Theses player are not required to love SC2 and it is common for some to switch jobs after a salary cut.

Well If it wasn't a great game - ppl wouldn't have played it, but there are 2 problems that are big enough for ppl to reconsider and think otherwise I think..

Those are the following:
1 - TvP mech play (lack of it ofc.)
2 - PvZ stalemate late-game

ofc. there might have been others - in ZvT for example, but think that those are adressed already, but the 2 I noted about still remain.. And the question is - how long till those 2 are finally resembled..

Not saying that players are retiring for that, but it's at least one of the reasons they don't keep fighting hard for it I think..
Another world, another place, another universe, won the race.. :) ;) :P

With such a massive influx of players from Kespa it's only normal that those who either can't keep up or dislike the game to leave.

If the game is not attractive enough it should not be inflated artificially by coercing people into playing it. If it's a big enough problem to hurt the franchise then the franchise simply isn't good enough. The solution is then to improve the game, not pretend to like it.

Well, most ex-BW players retire because they find Broodwar more attractive compared to SC2.
I do not think that SC2 will die because of that
And if it was the case :
- SC2 will die like BW died because of SC2 ?
- You cannot force people who don't enjoy SC2 to stay. They might get better salary on SC2 but they have the guts to retire to live their passion. This explains a lot.
- This would maybe change Blizzard behaviour to make SC2 more interesting ?

Now hope that Zero will be back on Broodwar !

Zero wanted too much money from Woongjin, and no one else wanted to pay that much. So he was given the prospect of either lowering his salary or going team less.

What does this sentence mean? Someone help me plz, is this trying to take a shot at Zero or just saying he wanted to retire, so he didn't join any team.

Whatever gets your drama-juices flowing more, obviously.

But it just means that teams knew he was retiring before the twitter announcement.

Retired when being in GSL and being a player with high amount of skills just like JangBi it is so sad... It means that he does not like the game and the only problem is StarCraft II... T_T

I doubt that JangBi, Bisu and ZerO would miss the opportunity to travel around the world and play in foreign events.
I think they see no future in Korea and there was no opportunity to contact foreign teams coz it would look incorrect to ask for something for such big players so they decided to retire.

He probably had some foreign teams that tried to offer him a contract, but no doubt ZerO declined them due to to low salary (as ZerO probably wanted a Woongjin Stars-like salary that he had) and the 2 KeSPA teams that still actively hire players in SC2 (SKT T1 and KT) already hired a few new players lately so they probably didn't want to spend a big salary either on him at which point ZerO probably just called it quits and retired.

UMMMM, his salary with Woongjin was modest at best. Not every KeSPA player was making a whole lot you know. >_< Whether it be low-balling or asking for a pay increase his position to negotiate was meh considering he played second fiddle to SK going back to BW. Really shitty position for him nonetheless. -__-

That sounds like a shot at Zero to me, so I assumed. If you didn't , just say the reason why other teams didn't pick him up very clearly since that's not very clear to me as an outsider. Or why you didn't pick him up.

That sentence of yours sounds to me like you definitely know more about this than us fans, so I assume you found out the salary ZerO requested, and then you are like fuck it, you are not worth it.

I feel the opposite. Traveling the world to play SC2 means you actually have to practice something that you don't enjoy for 8+ hours each day. That's the definition of insanity. If you watched Bisu stream BW you would see how happy he is and how much he enjoys spending time with fans that know his history and appreciate his work. Signing with a foreign team doesn't equal an easy button. You still are required to work hard and put in great effort. JD is a great example of success at this while Puma, who enjoys SC2, is an example of how you can try hard to achieve and still not hit the bar. So now take someone who may not enjoy the game but has played something they love for a decade and now are being paid not to play it anymore. I would easily pay a monthly fee to play BW cause I love the game so much, now imagine see what they are willing to do for that game

So its better to play some bw now and then, but let the whole franchise die?

Your comment is idd a Malevolent Creation, ifuknowadamean

Now hope that Zero will be back on Broodwar !

edit : I agree with #662

noones talking about forcing, but the attitude of "yay, retirements!" might not be TheBest, for starcraft and esports in general

BW didn't die because of SC2, BW died because of Blizzard.

Ironically, Blizzard also killed SC2 but by lack of interest put out by an inferior product. Not by directly stymieing their ability to produce new tournaments like they had in BW.

anyway, BRING ON ZERO TO AFREECA! afreeca is so fun to watch nowadays. i'm hoping some corporate sponsor steps up and puts pressure on for a new tournament series. but until then, sonic rules.

It really is no different than a foreigner joining a Korean team. Not only do they feel out of place, but they're always struggling against the language barrier. A lot of players don't want to have to deal with such things.

Yea - because ZerO was like super relevent to the scene.

I wonder how many of the people who claim that SC2 is dying is coming from a BW background, because as someone who didn't follow BW people such as Bisu, Jangbi, ZerO and so on might aswell never have exsisted. I understand that these players have a huge legacy from BW but to be fair, almost none of them added anything to the SC2 scene. Most casual viewers who only watches Premier League and Premier tournaments might not even have seen more than a few games these people. During the eight months Proleague ran Bisu played like 20 games or so.

Obviously Kespa players didn't make quite the impact on the scene that people expected them to do, and i can understand why people who used to be at the top of the food-chain wouldn't want to start all over again.

If SC3 came in 1 year and players like Life MC or MVP became irrelevant you would see similar posts from some of the current SC2 fans.

I never say BW is dieing, but I am someone who came from BW and waited 2 years and watched SC2 consistently anticipating the BW switch of Kespa pros to SC2 because I love them as people themselves and wanted to be able to support them in SC2. I feel like it's just a strong vocal minority of people that ring loud when they says SC2 is dieing and it hurts. The same a**holes did it to BW when times were tough. But years later I'm having tons of fun with BW still. SC2 will do the same thing.

Sooner or later you just have to drown them out. But it's not BW fans that are preaching this. Pure BW fans just don't care to waste their time here and hurt people. It's an infection within the SC2 community itself. The responsibility falls on the abundance of fans the still remain the SC2 world to start being louder than the vocal minority. I left SC2 forums for a while because the SC2 community stopped having pride and being supportive. Instead posters have allowed the vocal minority to walk over them.

Instead of replying to the SC2 dieing preachers take an effort to discuss games in forums. Make jokes with each other. Start rivalry battles in LR thread. Make cheerfuls. For fuck sakes scream as loud as you can at every game about how amazing it was. Then the bug will come back. The one that made everyone want to be a part of Starcraft 2. The one that took the world by storm. Stop blaming people and get your shit together SC2 community.

Completely agree with the vocal minority part. In recent LR thread, half of the posts are coming from like 5 people.

Why? You made the assumption that I was taking a shot at ZerO which is the dumbest thing I've heard all day, which is quite the achievement since I read Youtube comments.

This is why "the fans" shouldn't speculate on things they don't know, it leads them to these kind of crazy conclusions.

Nobody picked him up because we knew he was retiring. It's shocking that I have to spell that out considering my original post in the thread. This is also in reference to the previous thread on the subject where some people questioned why we picked up Mekia and not ZerO and also about how stupid teams were for not grabbing such a great player. The reality was, those teams are not stupid, they know far more than the fans do and they all knew ZerO was retiring. We did not want to discuss it because announcing a players retirement before he is ready to is super-BM and highly disrespectful.

cmon, I think ZerO was par with SK if not better in BW. In SCII though, SK Was considered superior although that ZvP against Trap in PL finals was one crazy game and ZerO almost won it. Best of luck to ZerO! I'm sure he'll do well and hope to hear he joins SRT/SSL

Now that's a clear explanation, rather than salary, it's just he's retiring. I don't think this is 100% clear for every fan.

And I still don't think it's completely that black and white, if he was for certain to retire, he won't be in free agent draft in KeSPA. Given a huge offer and perfect environment, he can definitely consider to continue, it's just nobody will offer him one.

Really appreciate comments from TB and Nazgul - people that know their stuff. So tired of the negative vocal minority and clueless forum posters both making inane comments without knowing really the full context.

Makes sense and absolutely not surprising with lack of infested CCs and spawn broodling in SC2. Is it better now :D?

You can clearly see that in LRs from "patchzerg" era in WoL (people need to look them up). in 2010 or 2011 (proud years of SC2) such posting was granted with quick death, but during second half of WoL it became (sometimes) a norm. Yet still when someone mentioned BW he became ostracized. It's some of sort of human self-defense mechanism that works sometimes in a very peculiar way. Like shitting in your own nest (your own mind, low self esteem) but opposing anyone who dares to do that from outside. Im not defending people who came up to stir drama with BW Chant im just saying it is hypocritical, just as we - humans can be.

Same way as SC2 vs LoL which always annoys me a little, because the word skill or game being so hard is being overused so much in favor of SC2 but it is as well used against BW in comparison. There is really nothing more hypocritical than SC2 fan calling out LoL for being noob friendly and than ranting on BW guy on LR for being elitist.

My small hypothesis on why SC2 was healthier in 2010 and 2011 here, besides the novelty gameplay factor was simply the fact BW had it's pro scene. The so called "bad guys" were happy back then, heck some of them even liked to watch both games. Pretty incredible right? When everyone can choose what they want to do, they are indeed happier.

I too was cought into Kespa switch hype for a while, but something cracked inside of me when i understood it's truly a lie(fortunately it happened pretty quickly). Now i don't really care that much about both Sospa and SC2. I kinda moved on as well but I can't help to throw some tips because i see more evil being done from inside rather from only a fraction of BW fans who are still alive here.

I really want to emphasize what BisuDagger said, the strong community would never fall under the rule of few. I remember being in a CS community and even if i don't remember much Quake people coming up and saying no-skill game (because it wasn't DUH!), and even if they did they would never ever accomplish anything. They would accomplish something only when the community itself would believe that.

My wrist really started to flare up. My colossi number started to pile up and with the last of my concentration I prepared for a win.

I really hope there are a lot of newbies stepping up to fill these slots. Almost seems like the teams are being strangled for players.

GL ZerO... to all the people complaining about players retiring, it really shouldn't surprise you... a lot of these players have been playing competitively since BW. Time to move on in life. You can't play competitive games forever. He's 23 years old and is making a decision to get on with life before it's too late. Respect that instead of QQing.

This isn't the same decade as BW though. Relatively speaking, 3 years is a pretty long time for a game now in the evolving era of esports. And despite zero retiring, albeit sad, doesn't really have a major impact on SC2's success. As mentioned previously, a lot of these retiring BW players are at the tail end of their careers anyways...

I have said this many times but some people just dont understand it ;(

Players retiring never means market shrinking, however, fanbase certainly shrinked, and tournaments certainly reduced in this year, that's the problem. Not only in Korea.

This is like the best reply on the topic EVER.

I never say BW is dieing, but I am someone who came from BW and waited 2 years and watched SC2 consistently anticipating the BW switch of Kespa pros to SC2 because I love them as people themselves and wanted to be able to support them in SC2. Did that guy seriously just try to shit on JangBi? Brought nothing to the scene? What in the blue hell is he talking about. ZerO was also a big role player for Stars having a pretty good PL season man, even when he was throwing games and I'd say the KeSPA players did their fair share in the OSL and GSL respectfully. They were flooding the bloody place.

They know a bit more, but not to full context, their statements are certainly based on personal judgement. And also Nazgul has credibility, TB lacks it.

Yes, but it is also pretty obvious why people are doing this. Besides the obvious trolls - some people post these things, because they do care. I do care and though I also never write SC2 is dying, I am not blind. The problem is the past and also the present. Past - BW - is obvious. Everyone knows what BW scene looked like and everyone also knows the SC2 scene doesn't look like that. It is saddening. And the present? When people see what LoL is like in Korea, when I saw the broadcast of OGN the Champions for a first time - i was just hurt. It hurts seeing OGN stadium full with people screaming - just few days after the same stadium was more or less empty during Proleague broadcast.

Another thing also is, that even though we are fans of SC2, we do see that the game is not the best. Or rather, that it could be much better. It would probably take much, but there certainly are ways to make it better. That's why people are constantly posting these threads about 'WCS redesing' and 'redesign of protoss' and 'stronger mech' and 'redesigning economy'. Not because they want to troll and just say SC2 is dying. Quite the opposite actually (for the most part) - it's because they do CARE a lot and they want for a good game to become even BETTER. They want Blizzard (because quite frankly, nobody else can) do SOMETHING to make the full stadiums for RTS a possibility again - like it was during BW.

Actually thats extremely uninteresting. Obviously no one knows the entire reasoning for zeros retirement except for zero himself. This is beyond obvious.

But people that don't even have a clue who zero is are the ones that were talking, and people that DO know their shit came and corrected them. They don't know the full context, does this matter what so ever at all? No. Is it interesting to think about? Not even the tiniest bit.

I'm honestly quite confused at your completely random statement.

For a game with such a healthy community. The competitive scene is making me sad. But, I guess i's logical to quit when the money just isn't coming in.

I would have liked SC2 Tournaments to have been more Team orientated. I think this would have reduced the impact these retirements are having on the T_T.

Zero was a top zerg player before I even heard of Soulkey. His drone micro, storm dodging, purple glasses, and adorable smile made him my favourite player.

Time to finally change my team icon

Long, long time ago man. Well aware when ZerO was the go-to, but once SoulKey emerged he never really looked back. Still those guys weren't making a whole lot back then. It sucks when you don't have a lot of titles to show for your work but he did do fairly well. Just didn't really get paid for his efforts and Boooo on changing logos. I never changed mine from MBC for all these years even when Bisu and July got fucking traded. Heck, I'm even posting about Bisu being on the Telecom team for Sonic PL, but he was with SK last. Still BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Ha ha ha. I guess they have to make it fair. D:

Now Killer has someone of his caliber to contend with as a top-tier Z in BW. Hope his reflexes are still the same and he can actually take the fight to Sea.

I really though zero gonna be awesome at sc2 to be honest. He is not a generic macro zerg with great mechanical and he is one of the more creative zergs around in bw.

his game against Trap in PL finals was pretty amazing to watch but doesn't help that he lost and only just made code A qualifiers again.

Too many koreans leftover from BW. With no really impressive achievements it's only logical players are retiring. The BW-turned-SC2 scene was way too big to support such a large playerbase.
These retirements are really nothing strange, the scene's size is only normalizing. And there's still alot of players left.

Good luck to ZerO nonetheless! I liked his play in Proleague.

Free is famous in Korea for his management during actual battles, while his decision making and macro might not be the best he usually shines during engagements, hence the name. I think alot of that came from the 6 dragons era though.

I said "Oh FUCK." when I saw this appear, but then it was what I was expecting.
So long as he plays and streams BW like others and then competes in the different tournaments like SOSPA, it is probably for the best given that he hasn't stayed on Woongjin Stars' SC2 team.
I've loved by.hero's stream recently (not that he ever went into SC2 ) and ZerO is one of those I would most like to see play.
ZerO - FantaSy - Calm - Nal_rA - Jaedong - NaDa - EffOrt - Bisu - by.hero - StarDust - Welmu - Nerchio - Supernova - Solar - Squirtle - LosirA - Grubby - IntoTheRainbow - Golden... ~~~ Incredible Miracle and Woongjin Stars 화이팅!

His mechanics looked pretty strong in SC2. His creep spread looked good back when I saw his games in the WoL part of Proleague. Disappointing that he never really achieved Soulkey's level of success despite being a solid Zerg on Woongjin, but I hope to see him stream some BW on Afreeca now.

lol i think its God of Battles in korean. korean casters always say '전투하면 윤용태죠' in english, 'When it comes to fight (or battle), its free' They always praise him for good fights and even when he was behind, they believed his good battles will bring come back for him to actually win the game.

I agree. ZerO came and sat with Free as the Ace, finally eclipsing him. And Soulkey did the same with ZerO. ZerO was always an amazing A-class player though.

It's interesting, this is actually one big broodwar name retiring that got placed in sc2, almost without comment.

There was literally never a point in bw where SK was better than zero...I mean zero left broodwar with a semi final osl run for crying out loud. SK was twiddling his thumbs at the time.

At the end of Brood War they were separated in the Elo rankings by a whopping three points. You all need to stop mincing words.
Are you seriously trying to pretend ELO has some kind of meaning whatsoever? LOL.

I agree. ZerO came and sat with Free as the Ace, finally eclipsing him. And Soulkey did the same with ZerO. ZerO was always an amazing A-class player though.

It's interesting, this is actually one big broodwar name retiring that got placed in sc2, almost without comment.

;/ Yep. It pays to follow the scene all the way through. At the end of the day ZerO's prowess was in BW. That's not to say he didn't do well in PL when it turned to SC2 like the rest of the Stars, but his record could have been a lot better too if he didn't make so many ridiculous decisions. He had good advantages in several games and he threw it away. >_<

Zero was a top zerg player before I even heard of Soulkey. His drone micro, storm dodging, purple glasses, and adorable smile made him my favourite player.

It's not quite over, but we will take good care of ZerO over here, so don't worry.
