Probably wants to practise. You can´t play every tournament, flying every weekend is not to good for your physical condition and Acer does´nt have infinite money to fly him around either. I prefer to see him practise and rest for a bit and then see him at his best shape at Blizzcon.

I´m a bit sad about the invites; IEM has said at the beginning of the season, that they base the invites on WCS points and now we have Hyun at 1900, Stardust at 1600, Life at 1075 and Flash at 900 and the stage-2 invite is not the one with the most points, but with the loudest fanboys.

Flash has to be invited because he declined his spot for the former MLG and he received a seed thanks to KeSPA.

I know, why he is invited, but I still am disappointed, that IEM furfills MLG´s old promises instead of sticking to their own invite policy, which he clearly is not a part of.

I don't like this choice too but when you have Flash in your tournament you are sure to have a good viewer numbers...

You sure have, but a fair competition should be more worth than that. Also Flash is a decent player, he probably could make it from the open bracket into the tournament on his own (as long as he does´nt run into DRG), so there is no need to change the bracket for that.

My interest in IEM New York just went from "Somewhat" to "Anticipating". Great line-up and a mix of foreigners seeking to prove themselves should have a storyline. And with WCS points running low, this is the last chance for many of them, so expect the best play from them all.

But what does MLG have to do with ESL? Yes, this is an sanctioned event by blizzard, since it carries WCS points, but I doubt that blizzard required an invitation of Flash. (not that I mind seeing him)

MLG, ESL and DH have a partnership, so it could matter.

Should be clarified for those unaware.

We have the highest ranked WCS players who applied to come. We spoke to many players who we thought would come and many rejected for various reasons, some don't need the points, some couldn't afford, some want to focus on WCS and some just didn't want to go to New York.
Former ESL League Operations. I ran IEM/WCS for like 3 years or something. I did map vetos on a tablet. That guy.

It is more likely in that context that some korean master mind organization took over the flight cost and such.
It really looks to me as that its still centralized decision who of the licensed players they send to overseas events.

An "anonymus korean mastermind organisation" probably decided, that he is going and for example SK not. But they have no control an the IEM invitation system (At least I hope so) and IEM does not cover flight costs and stuff for wildcards anyway, only for qualifiers (which makes sence from my point of view).

I fell for that trap various times now. I should be able to learn it, since he does´nt play EPS, but somehow I always forget.

Invites are still based on WCS points, Mvp probably just declined. The only exception on that is the Flash-invite.

Also, this tournament is very very interesting simply alone for the fact that it decides who goes Blizzcon. Cheering hard for ForGG, but I'm not very faithful.

Yeah it's not like there are ongoing WCS Seasons and Regional finals to go before Blizzcon :D

Well lol, you're right, still very important to win this one.

Nice. I was going to be at NYCC anyway doing some panels and stuff, but when I saw the initial qualified players list I was a little underwhelmed (they're all great players, but not really any of my personal favorites aside from Polt). Between the wildcard and open bracket players, though, there's a ton of players I'd love to see now. Gonna watch IEM any time I get a chance to escape from my booth.

I did. This is going to be my last tournament. I have played 3 games in two months. I applied because I live right outside of NYC, and I didn't wanna just quit without a fight. I am probably gonna start practicing for this tomorrow since I don't have classes or work and hopefully figure something out for this tournament in 10 days. I am still not coming back no matter what the result, real life has the best of me currently.

If he beats Nerchio, he makes top 4 EU (again), and also qualifies for Season finals. I think that basically seals the deal for him (less than 5% chance of him not making it in that scenario IIRC). He could also lose to Nerchio, but if he still managed to grab the 5th spot to the Season finals, he still would have a shot.

i kinda expected the open bracket to have more players.

so basically this is gonna be a fun tournament but the finals will almost certainly be Polt vs DRG. not sure who wins that.

I don´t think, that a final is certain at this point, HerO, sOs, Naniwa or Curious could all eliminate Polt/DRG. Although I hope for DRG to do well, not all of his Matchups are on his vT level again.

DRGvZ may not be as strong, and Hyun with his decision to run through as many foreign tournaments as he can this year would definitely pose a threat.

I think some people are underestimating TLO. I don't think his stint on EG is going to curse him too bad, I expect him to do really well this tournament.

Their invite list is really a shame though. There are so many players on the cusp of going to the grand finals that deserve the shot imo. Oh well, it'll be interesting that's for sure.

Does anyone know the qualification rules for IEM WC ? Do the players win points in each IEM event (like last year) or do the top 2/4 directly qualify for Katowice ?

I think you people misunderstand the invites. These invites are 100 % the people with the most WCS points available that wanted to compete at IEM New York. So they went down the list and people kept declining until they reached these players.

Then I don't get for example why Flash is in Wildcard and Life is in Open Bracket when the latter has more points than the former ? Am I missing something ?

Yeah it's definitely not WCS points, they're not fooling anybody. StarDust, Life, and Hyun all have more points than Flash and all three are in open bracket.

Maybe they thought they couldn't make it and only found out later? It's entirely possible.

On the other hand they're holding a SC2 event in the NA timezone so you can't blame them too much for trying to boost their viewers numbers with bs invites.

That's a good point, even LoL semifinals only get half the viewers when they're at NA primetime instead of EU.

Looks to be just fan favorites. I mean it's their tournament so they have a right to choose who they invite I guess. Some make pretty good sense but others are pretty wild.

Who would've thought IEM having so many good players. Usually there's only 2 or 3 Koreans. Looks like Flash is determined to enter Blizzcon.

Not sure why sOs is there. He's basically guaranteed for Blizzcon already.

Yes it is WCS points. I've gone through the whole process myself with our team. The situation is that if a player declines at first, they move down the list and if they accept, the spot is obviously theirs. If the player who declined earlier comes back and wants to play anyway, he will receive the spot that's available.

Example is that we declined TLO at first to the event and they went down the WCS pts list. We came back some time later and said ok, we would actually like to do him anyway. By that time Grubby and DIMAGA had been offered the slots, so we had to wait until they decided whether or not they wanted in. When they didn't want in, we got the slot back since Dario was the highest ranked WCS player that wanted to play the tournament at that given time.

Love that IEM gets the most shit of any tournament for supposedly invites even though they had the most open system of all the premier tournaments since the beginning of SC2.

I hope NaNiwa will get a good result at New York. Would be nice to see him at Blizzcon

dat lineup! First IEM in a very long time that I'm actually excited for. Hope the times are ok for Europe, I barely caught anything of the last IEM.

Go San!

And then there´s always this little tiny miniscule belief, which like atomic decay only gets smaller without ever vanishing, that this could be Demuslim´s break-out tournament.

No illusion, I miss watching him play with his aggressive style and early rushes.

He is fun to watch

For a lot of the players the WCS points doesn't even matter. For many even if they win the whole thing, it won't permit get them enough for WCS since they're out of out of WCS and can't go over 3000 points. For players like sOs, HerO and Polt, they've already got enough points. The few players for whom the points do matter are NaNiwa, StarDust, Hyun and maybe TLO if he wins the whole thing (and get 100 points for finishing the bracket to get into Premier) and if 2925 points is enough to place top 16.

If the wild card invites goes in the order of WCS points, I'm actually surprised it went all the way down to Flash at the 40th spot. It would make sense for MC and Hyun to go to help give them greater assurance that they'd have enough points for BlizzCon. TeaJa would have made sense too since both him and HerO are going to be in the USA anyways for WCS America and help them be used to the time zone in advance.
