I remember 6 months ago when MLG was organizing the WCS America. It started really badly with a poorly handled qualifier. Not only the problems with the Chinese players but the casting and their will to hide the results so they could cast the matches later. So many people was wondering why it was MLG doing that and not NASL, how NASL was so much better at doing online tournament, etc.
Starting season 2, MLG was replaced by NASL and everyone was so happy.
So today, there was the first qualifier for WCS America Challenger Season 3. There are only 2 streams with casters : Eggi and... MLG. NASL? nope, nothing. No news from them and they didn't even say a word about casting the best matches later (at least, I didn't see anything on their website and on their twitter, they just spam a link to buy tickets for the WCS finals in Toronto)
Not only they don't cast anything, the official bracket ( http://binarybeast.com/xSC21308234 ) is private and so, not available for public. (message is : Results are currently private and not yet available for public viewing).
At the time I am writing, it is still on, I think they are at the RO16, and since the top 4 qualify, that means there are only 2 rounds left. And yet, there is no way to know who played this qualifier, if there was any upset or who is close to qualify to the Challenger League of WCS.
So, is this how NASL now deals with the WCS America?
edit :

There was a check-in required 30mins before your match that you had to do by messaging this one admin and waiting for a reply. If your opponent wasn't there or afk you were supposed to tell the admin, who eventually went through every no-show by asking in chat for them to reply to him. For the ro128 this was done before 3pm PDT and lead to several people getting walked over despite returning in time for the match at 3pm PDT. As far as I could tell the one admin wasn't able to get to everyone having issues so a lot of walkovers went unresolved. Next issue; map pool. The maps are the same as the ladder but there was zero information on starting maps or if there was a veto system. After messaging the admin to check in for the ro128 he gave out the maps which were randomly selected by him (or someone). They were set maps for each game so no vetoing or loser picks. The funny part is in the very next round for the maps the starting map was chosen again by the admin but it became loser picks for no reason. The lack of information regarding the map rules also lead to some people ignoring the admin and doing vetoes for map picks anyway. Overall it was probably one of the worst qualifiers for an important tournament I've been in or seen, and probably the worst WCS qualifier for all three seasons. To sum up the problems; lack of advertising it, lack of information, poor scheduling and only one admin. Hopefully the qualifier on the 24th is ran better but I'm not getting my hopes up D: For information on the next qualifer; http://nasl.tv/News/Article/20130914wcs-america-season-3-qualifier-informationQualifier 2 12pm PDT on September 24 - Registration opens 12pm PDT on September 27 - Registration closes 12pm PDT on September 28 - Tournament begins (I assume ro512 same as todays)

*Sighs* Why can't anyone get WCS right? Like, ESL and then theirs is everyone else's shit. Maybe 2014... then again, we have been saying maybe next time for 3 seasons now..

Well, it seems Tassadar made it to the top 4 (and so to WCS challenger). Who did he beat? I have no fucking clue cause there is no bracket.

It's pretty sad this sort of thing still happens for season three.

he beat aphrodite to get there (that's what they said on mlg stream)
but yeah this is pretty dumb to keep the bracket private still...i didn't even know she participated/got that far

I just don't get why we can't see the bracket, the most plausible thing is that they want to cast the replays of some of the games....

I think they are. Didn't the MLG stream do some other stuff while Axslav play his qualifier games?

It seems like the qualifiers were much less advertised than in previous seasons. I also don't understand why the brackets are being hidden in the WCS AM qualifiers. Pretty much means making a thread is useless because you don't know any of the results so I guess there's not really anything you can do for that. I guess for AM they'll just have to rely on the TL News posting of the results like they usually do but if I'm around I can probably host the Code A qualifier thread unless someone else wants to do it

They actually streamed him playing and casting the qualifier games at the same time.

I opened a topic for the KR qualifier 2 weeks ago (just to say the dates), no-one cared
anyway, if NASL hides the bracket to cast game later, why don't they say so? why don't they communicate at all? MLG wanted to do that for 1st season and few days ago they apologized on how it was a really bad idea to hide results to the community. and now NASL would do the exact same thing?
|
If they're going to save games to cast from replay, why do they announce results for unaired game on stream? :S

I'd wish the organizers - and thats all of them, ESL NASL GOM- would put more focus on these qualifiers. I understand the major focus on premier for the resources at hand, but I don't understand the poor communication.
These qualis are the touch point where the unknowns meet the stars. So it should be a very important part in the strategy for community building and prolonging the game's lifecycle.
--- If you look where most visits to the BB bracket come from, its Liquipedia.. 73%..
There should be announcements about it on this very major community site (and nope, neither nasl website, esl website, wcs website, reddit news aggregator, or battle net will ever replace TL in regards to getting the news to the fans of the game). When i started to get involved in SC2 there would be these posts/announce by NASL, IEM etc in SC2 general. Nowadays only Proleague does a good job at it (thanks Ghost!). It shouldn't be so hard to hire a CM (and he should be at Blizzard I think) who takes the info from the partners and publishes/forwards it to WCS website but then also to the established fan communities (TL, netwars, goodgame, readmore, sc2sea, whatever korean etc)
----- Now for the first NASL qualifier I kinda expected a bit of a messy start. They never ran much of a bigger cup or something. Hope the poor hero admin doesn't get "terminated" and learnings will be made.

TL and its news, links, and LR threads contribute A LOT to these tournaments as a free service. I wish they'd give us a better heads up and more info about it, if they really want WCS to keep growing.

I've also premade an OP for WCS KR Qualifiers if anyone wants to do it. Some of it will be streamed by Khaldor.

I had a laughable experience with whoever is the "NASLAdmin" today with Jig. Now let me be clear, me and Jig concluded the issue and held nothing against one another - so all the people spamming me earlier should read this...here is essentially what happened:
they dqed my opp for being late because I asked about it in chat and reported the walkover. They then proceeded to make me play him nearly 3(?) hours later because the way they DQ'ed players was linear. That is to say, as long as the admin was messaged any time between rounds the match was played instead of a regular 15 minute/failure to check in deadline for the DQ. Now, Jig was not incredibly late or anything, however, the match time was asked about and had already been reported, regardless of how you feel about what 'should' have been done I reported due to rules - this is from numerous tournament experiences in 2010-2011, I'm sorry if that hurts your feelings. As I was getting ready for next match I was fixing some of my keycaps because today I got my custom keycap set from WASD, I let the admin know this nearly the moment we started talking since Jig messaged him about the issue. The admin then said he'd DQ me if I don't play within 5 minutes. Sick notice bro, except I didn't have a keyboard with keycaps at that moment. I played the series out with half a keyboard just so Jig could go ahead and advance, but most certainly, neither of us were impressed with the horrendous admin of this tournament.
If you're going to admin a tournament you need multiple people who can be clear and concise about rules and important information such as someone's tournament life line. Jig had a shit experience because he almost got DQ'ed for no reason (admin was not clear with me) and I had a horrendous experience because I essentially got a walk over, then had to play the game anyway 3 hours later because an admin was not clear. I was forced into playing this match with half a keyboard which had a major impact on the games, suffice to say.
I really, really wish these qualifiers had any effort put into them. WCS America represent... lol...

I find it hilarious that leagues want their tournaments/events to be taken seriously/grow yet they don't put the effort to properly run them.

mad props to axslav and axeltoss, despite the lack of coverage from NASL, those 2 did a good job holding down the fort

i dont get it...you just have to look at wcs europe and just try to replicate what they are doing and you are set....wcs na has been disappointing
i know it's easier said than done but if you are given this project to represent the na scene, do it right...put in the work...don't slap a registration for qualifier on a static page and call it a day...advertise that shit every chance you get...reddit/tl/facebook/twitter/etc...next it shouldn't have been private...teammates/fans would love to follow their teammates/players and see how they are doing in the tournament...who they can be facing next....who they are facing now...it also brings awareness to a potential amateur player...what if there was an amateur player that knocked out a korean early (like ro64) but was knocked out later on...we missed that...we could've been like "woah...this guy just took out this korean...who is he? etc"...i get it or at least i do...nasl wants to focus on creating the storyline for the ones who made it in...but that could've been done with brackets public and with the brackets public it brings awareness to those who barely missed it but played some pretty good series with other pros that you (nasl) will probably not research on
if the casters for nasl are busy then why not take a page out of the dh book and ask for community casters...dh had 19 streams...i'm sure they could've had 8-10 community streams rolling (with delay of course)...idk this is just frustrating b/c this scene is fading because the amateur scene is dying...not the pro scene...building the amateur scene will increase the involvement from the semi-pros and potentially casuals that are good at the game...that will potentially increase viewership for the pro scene
im tired so probably didn't make sense but yeah

Add to that the fact that only 4 spots are up for grabs in the qualifiers, which is beyond silly. I hope they will do a major revamp of the WCS system.
|
wow that's awful. Why the hell did they do this? After the mess and all the outrage because of the first season qualifier I thought NASL guys would be smart enough to not screw this up...
|
glad I am not the only one who was like woops wcs qualifiers where did they come from, mlg stream was funny though. But wow one admin for something that could have been a 512 people tournament ? He was probably damn happy he there were almost no news about this qualifier.

still private......so do we have the results? Or is this still ongoing?

YEAH WCS AMERICA!!! #1 WCS everrrrr
But seriously we need to get out shit together if we even want to have something resembling a good WCS America tourney.

Seriously, wish i could get back 2011. Dat was the Sc2 year.

Well, I expected this to happen once they switched from MLG to NASL. They're all the same.

looks like they actually added rules and maps per round this time, so at least it shouldn't be as bad as last week. hopefully they have more than one admin this time;;
