http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot

Words have etymologies and multiple meanings. Including slur words. Generally you should go with the most common connotation of a word in the given context. For instance, near as I can tell the word "chink" has pretty much died out as a slur, so if I heard it used in a sentence I would assume scratch, hole, or weak spot. Not that being essentially a dead slur stopped ESPN from firing an editor for using the word (which I thought was a little silly given that they use the phrase "chink in the armor" constantly for all the other races).

As for the word "bitch" the meaning you should assume depends on the context. My family owned a dog when I was growing up, and we went to dog shows, and yes, at dog shows if someone used the word "bitch" you could assume it was the breeder connotation. In every other context--if you weren't at a breeder's house or in a dog show, "bitch" was almost always a derogatory gender insult. (Even at dog shows, there were clearly people not comfortable using the word given how nasty the word could get in the outside world). And maybe I just grew up in a bygone era and "bitch" is no longer relevant as an insult, but...wait, no actually I'm pretty sure there are still people who use it as an insult. In fact, now that I think about it, I've been angrily called "bitch" in Starcraft 2 on multiple occasions (after people figure out my gender; if they don't know my gender it's usually "fag" instead).

Again, let me reiterate--if the zerg Illuminati wants to create a show where they toss out slur words for fun, that's totally up to them, and I'll probably still watch it anyway because I adore Conan and Sasha so much. I was just making a suggestion.

I do think there was a bit of sexism in the unintentional young boys goofing off together sort of way (sorry guys...), which doesn't offend me so much because of the source, but does illicit the occasional sigh or eye roll.

However, I'm curious about you reaction to the word "bitch". I've never really found that word offensive used as a generic derogatory term. If someone called me that with serious ire and to my face they might get a slap (literally or with rhetoric, depending on the situation.) So, it does hold some weight to me as an insult. Yet, I've never really taken offense as a woman if I hear it thrown around in a non serious way or among males. To me the history of the word is much less onerous than "faggot" or the "n-word". I'd just like to know why? Is it on the basis that they're calling someone weak or silly by equating them to a woman?

I guess to me it just feels like a word that describes a decently specific behavior that I don't even really associate it to females anymore. As you say, words change over time. I used to find "pussy" very distasteful when I was younger; I stopped being bothered with it over time. Just like no one is picturing a puckering anus when they call someone "asshole" I don't think anyone's actually thinking of a vagina when they use the term "pussy"

PS - I'm not attacking your opinion or feeling on the matter, I'm just genuinely curious because I've never really known anyone who felt that way.

Personally, having watched the episode myself now, and thoroughly enjoying it...you need to relax. Not everything is a veiled insult or gender slight, Suppy was not saying that with the intent of insulting ANYONE (and anyone, whether male or female, who reads the situation as such, shouldn't even bother to open their internet browser because they obviously haven't learned the attitudes or mindsets of this generation), and it honestly reminded me more of classic djWheat than anything else.

I mean, I hate to say it, but if, as you say, there are a minority of people who would not want to watch because Suppy sprinkled THREE "bitches" into his conversation, then those people - SIMPLY PUT - should not tune in. This is not their show. And frankly it shouldn't be. I know these players stated several times that this show is just as much FOR THEM as us, and I would not want someone to struggle to not be himself because of some politically correct bullshit.

Again, for people who cannot tell the difference between a few "bitches" used lightly in jest, and what is clearly a derogatory insult, don't bother tuning in!

(Okay Noobity, this last obviously isn't directed at Metroid Composite since she said she would watch the show regardless since she loves Suppy and Scarlett to pieces.)

I think the show itself is awesome, and something that we could use. Honestly I think that it's almost like a team practice where they're just talking about play and making suggestions and it's pretty interesting.

I don't agree with censoring yourselves, but I can understand the points being brought up. HOWEVER I would very much suggest that if you're going to be using clan tags, thanking sponsors, or any of that (I didn't stay till the very end, I don't know if any team sponsors were thanked) you should probably take those points into consideration. If there's one thing that we know from prior instances it's that this community can be awesome or it can be horrible. If you're not going to act in the accepted "professional" manner I think it's best to keep away from attaching yourselves to your teams during it.

I quoted "professional" because I don't think we have a reasonable definition of the term for professionals in their teens and 20's playing video games. I don't personally have any problems with anything that was said or done that I saw, but I just figured I'd put that out there as my personal advice to avoid possible problems in the future.

EDIT: I want to just say as well, nobody should be attacking Metroid or anyone else who is making these suggestions. A lot of the counterpoints don't really seem like they're being made considerately. None of the original points were brought up with maliciousness or ill intent, please take that into consideration.
My name is Mike, and statistically, yours is not.

I haven't been keeping tabs on this lately, but last I checked, TL was full of the word "rape". Choose your battles.

There's a difference between a forum post from a 13 year old, and a video web broadcast of professionals controlling the content on their show.

They could be culturally sensitive if they choose to be. Or they could actively choose not to be, and that might work out for them too--I hear Destiny manages to attract viewers with his style. It's a stylistic choice I suppose, but it's a choice they probably want to make on purpose and not by accident.

But does using the word "bitch" even constitute as sexism?

The word is historically a slur. From my experience, women in their 40s find it extremely offensive. Women my age tend to be mildly annoyed by it, although it usually won't cause me to turn off a stream, just flinch a little and grimace. And I'm completely out of touch with what kids think these days. If rap is any indication, kids these days are all walking around calling themselves "bad bitches"--but something tells me rap might not be a completely accurate way of understanding the younger generation....

It sounds like you're just being a bitch about it. Find something else to worry about.

The show itself was great. There's always good content coming out from these guys, keep it up!

This seems less like a show and more like a meeting of the Zerg brain trust (+Major) for NA. Like super informative practice session that just so happens to be streamed.

And that's not a bad thing.
Yes, I email sponsors... to thank them. Don't post drunk, kids. My king, what has become of you?
