After rigorous regional qualifiers we whittled it down to eight fierce players. With a fully paid trip to Shanghai and WCS points on the line, the biggest names in Starcraft II flocked to their respective qualifiers. These eight players are joined by the top four applicants from the WCS ranking: Song "HerO" Hyeon Deok, Han "aLive" Lee Seok, Kim "Revival" Dong Hyun and Lee "Jaedong" Jae Dong. All four players are currently ranked within the top twenty in the WCS rank and will, no doubt, pose a huge threat to their fellow competitors. Four slots remain for the players who can distinguish themselves from the gauntlet in Stage 1 of the main event. Stage 1 will be played in two double elimination brackets of eight players. The top two from each bracket will earn a coveted spot in the group stage of the tournament. With players such as Park "DongRaeGu" Soo Ho, Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen and Jang "MC" Min Chul the path to Stage 2 is formidable. You can follow the action starting 9:15 AM CST every day from the 25th to 28th July - first up is Stage 1 on the 25th, to determine the final four players in the groups of Stage 2. Stage 2 will then be played out on 26th and 27th, with the grand final on the 28th. Tune in to the action on ESL TV!
Group A: Myungsik, Titan, Revival, open bracket #1 Group B: Alive, Slivko, MAcsed, open bracket #2 Group C: Hero, qxc, Jaedong, open bracket #3 Group D, hyun, Polt, Iaguz, open bracket #4
It says they were "chosen by WCS points". Does anybody know what exactly this means and by what system they were chosen? Especially since Jaedong was only 20th in that ranking.

That means they were inviting WCS ranked players and kept on inviting until 4 of them replied "Yes".
|
I would guess those were the top 4 players that could actually make it there

That would make a very surprisingly long list of "No". That is why I do have my doubts about that.
|
Why not ask in the IEM thread instead like you were told by JBright in your last thread? I mean Carmac was in there answering questions so you could ask him, he would know right?

There are teams besides EG and TL... so many players could have been given an opportunity TT

also, it is imaginable that other teams cant/dont want to send their players to china, so teams like EG/TL sent their players, because they have more budget to do so

My last thread got deleted before I could open it again. I did ask Carmac on twitter but I am not sure if he answeres at all and also not sure if he wants to answer the core of the question.

KeSPA teams will only send their players if IEM pays for flight and/or hotel. IEM prob said they wouldn't do this. EG and TL have enough money to pay for flights so they said yes. IDK about the esf players

According to Adebisi many Korean players have to play WCG qualifiers.

Huh so the last spot went to Jaedong, I thought it was the top 4 of WCS AM or something. Oh wtf MC and DRG are playing!!!! This is gonna be the most stacked line-up ever in a tournament on Chinese soil.

Even the ESF guys? And even the Liquid and Axiom guys?

They are invites without paid travel, unlike the qualifiers

i hear this "Revial" is pretty good

Something a bit silly here: Those who qualified or were invited based on WCS points are already top 16 and therefore have already locked in 75 points. Thus, 4 players were invited based on points and immediately earned more without doing anything. Haha.

ESF might not want to pay for flights, Liquid is sending HerO since it's probably cheaper than sending TLO from EU, and I dunno about Alicia and Ryung but,
/summon TotalBiscuit TB Axiom

I think it is a terrible system. But the majority seems to think it is good. Oh well.

Badass. So fun seeing JD at all these tournaments!

I think the lack of practice is going to start kicking in soon. Think of MC in 2011.

I have the feeling that passports and visas might have also gotten in the way slightly, depending on where IEM is this year.

Based on the word "applicants" I assume that rather everyone who wanted to go via those spots applied, and they took the top 4 out of those players

eSF doesn't pay for flights just so It's clear, the individual teams do.

at first i thought it said "leaving EG-TL'.

Are in the Dual Tournament only chinese player or also some others?
|
It is possible Kespa only allowed the ones that qualified to go, leaving a few non-Kesparians for the 4 invites. Even if it isn't done completely by WCS points, it's not like WCS pts. count for that much.
But, happy to see Jaedong going, since I'd say he's clearly the best of the 4 invites and has been doing quite well recently (despite his lackluster WCS ranking).

Hopefully HerO can claw back some of the WCS points he lost with his NA exit.
If IEM aren't doing a tournament based entirely on qualifiers, I suppose WCS points is the next best thing. After all that was one of the points of implementing the system wasn't it?

if this was the case why didnt innovation play the qualifiers instead of accepting an invitation (besides later on giving up his spot).
knew the question of how they chose players would come up. sounds like a generic bullshit answer from iem. so many players wouldve jumped on the invitation if it were true

Jimcredible to win it all the way from the open bracket. I BELIEVE!

It will be a fun event but I am starting to wish we had more teams willing to travel, having EG/TL players at every event and rarely getting to see so many other top players does start to get a bit boring. I guess it's more WCS's fault for giving points to every tournament.
Hopefully the open bracket is nicely full of top Koreans!
|
Is there a better way to confirm? i can't find anything on wcg website or liquidpedia on korean wcg qualifiers this early in the year. Especially since grand final always in late December. Also is this why innovation dropped out after he did the IEM qualifier and got a paid trip?

He has pro league finals this weekend.

HyuN becoming the new MC recently by attending every tournament possible. After MLG and DreamHack he goes on to participate in IEM and ASUS ROG, and with the amount of WCS points he is accumulating, even a decent showing at IEM will probably secure his spot in the Ro16 despite never playing in any Premier league region-locked tournament.
Groups are balanced and don't have any major favorites if there are more than two Koreans in each group. Looking forward to this tournament for sure this weekend.

Anyone else miss oGsMC? I really hope he can reach the finals here.

Meh player pool, funny thing is, it feels like the 4 recently announced players could just place top 4 XD
The only two other players I can see doing good are Polt and HyuN, the three noted open bracket players are doing terrible in HotS. :/
I just dont see the reason that they had by inviting the first 4 going down the WCS points list since it seems like so many declined. Once you reach rank 20, which I think is what Jaedong is, then you have a problem.
It'll also be interesting to see the Chinese open bracket, since this is the only big international tournament that has had one in SC2. We might see some Chinese pros make it out, like XY and Jim (who, if he is there, will surely make it out). Also to excited to see Taiwanese players there, hopefully Slam and Sen are there!

No way STX Soul is going to send their super ace and current best player in the world over to Shanghai a week before they play in their first ever Proleague Grand Finals. They've been playing in Proleague for over a decade and have never made a final. I'm sure STX Soul does not want to take any chances of him getting sick, mugged, attacked, losing focus, or not getting the essential practice.
And he also has the OSL semifinals against Maru.

He searches his own name a lot, pretty much all pros and personalities do it from what I've heard.

So now even IEM is mostly korean event? Seven koreans out of 12 and only two europeans (not counting open bracket). This must be most boring IEM ever.

That's certainly an interesting opinion that you have: 2005 SKY Proleague and if they've been playing for "over a decade" you presumably also count 2003 KeMongSa KPGA Tour Team League and the 2004 SKY Proleague.
