Eight players advance through the Challenger League to next season's Premier League
ESL blazed through the bracket phase of the Challenger League in a week, selecting eight players to play in next Premier League season. Acer.MMA, LIquid`Ret, Acer.Bly, Grubby, Mill.Dayshi, c.Shuttle, XMG.ToD, and d.Tefel advanced to the highest tier of of European competition, with Season 2 set to begin next month.
There was not much upheaval, with six of eight advancing players being ones who competed in this season's Premier League already. However, the few upsets that did happen to occur were quite jarring. Alliance.NaNiwa, the DreamHack runner-up, lost in a shock 0 - 2 series to Dignitas' Tefel. Tefel had fought his way up from the very bottom through the Challenger League qualifiers, and earned a well deserved spot by defeating three Premier League players in Titan, Krass, and Naniwa in his Challenger League Bracket.
Additionally, Premier League caster XMG.ToD decided it was time to leave the casting booth and return to the player's desk, taking out EG.ThorZaIN.RC to secure his Premier League spot. ToD had also worked his way up from the Challenger League qualifiers, and defeated a different trio of Premier League players in Socke, Slivko, and ThorZaIN to earn his spot in the next season.
Not all hope is gone for the defeated players, however. The "Up/Down" stages of the Challenger League remain to be played in the upcoming weeks, with all of the bracket stage losers returning for a second chance. Sixteen spots still remain in next season's Premier League, and there are opportunities a plenty for Nonames and fan favorites alike.
Achievements of Dayshi in the last couple of days : - Gain a spot in M-cup via a qualifier defeating most notably Arthur, Tefel and Sting. - All kill of Quantic (korean-only roster including HyuN x2). - Gain a Premiere League spot defeating finale, HasuObs and Strelok. - Gain my love.
am i the only one that feels this rushed challenger league format (1 week), takes away some of the fun of this LEAGUE and takes away preparation time for the players?? I find more entertaining the korea Challenger league/code A, with more time between matches.

I agree with you, it seems like WCS EU is putting all of the focus on the Premier league and is just treating challenger like a qualifier instead of a part of the tournament. They even stream challenger on a different WCS EU twitch channel.

All of the Challenger League players who lost get put into eight groups of four players. They play out GSL-style Dual Tournament groups where the top two advance advance to the Premier League, third place stays in Challenger League, and the last place drops out of WCS completely.

Given that this stage format is set up in the line of '1 out of 5 players wins and nobody loses', I think it was ok. Maybe a day of rest between the games would be nice, but in the end this is only one of two qualifier rounds for the real attraction.

I was just going to mention that every time I see Dayshi pop up he seems to be beasting someone. Could be someone to keep an eye out for breakout performance going forward.
really really impressive for ToD to go from caster to busting all the way through the entire tournament qualification bracket. will he still cast, I wonder, like incontrol did way back during NASL Season 1?

French hope! He carry a heavy burden. Replace Stephano in few months.

If he does a big breakout in the scene, then Millenium is assurely a house generating talents.

I've always considered tod to be a top level foreigner ever since he was one game away from qualifying for code a back in 2011 i believe. glad he got through, although i will miss his casting...

the way it is in ESL it's more like the opposite
They should really invest in soundproof booths now that they are actually going to do this year round.

jaeh, just that he not played vs finale hasu and strelok to get premium bujt vs ELFI hasu and strelok ^^
So glad for ToD, really appreciate him a lot more since his casting. And also for ret, the eternal deserves-more-candidate. And then Grubby, man, Europe looks fun, so many relatable players.

I think ToD said at some point that he is top 10 in EU GM.
Ah its Sad that Naniwa, thorzain AND Sase lost :/ All swedes, that usually do so well. But its easier also to play all the challengenger rounds and come to the final yesterday with good confidence, just won a few games and are up to speed, compared to get out from p league round of 16, be angry and have just 1 game. Its hard, I guess thats why almost all round of 16 players lost that game yesterday.
And people, dont mind Naniwa when he speaks out, you dont know why is like he is against Tefel for example, why do people want to police everyones behaviour that isnt same as all random slaves? Let people be who they want to be, Naniwa loves his fans, he really do, and appreciate all your support. Thorzain is easy to like, also Sase is easy to like, you just have to love Naniwa for his skill and his will to please the audiance.
Gogo Nani, you will get through from the group games, you always do better from each game you play, just like in MLG or dreamhack now lately, lose first game and then shape up, feel more comfortable. Its very important for some ppl, clearly it was important for all PL players who lost yesterday against challengers.
At least 1 swedish in PL or I wont even watch it. Thats how booring it is to watch without one countryman in it.
But the good parts about yesterday. Bly went through, who really is a skilled player in my opinion but fail, perhaps because of nervs in tours, I dont know, but that was fun, and ToD lol, that was most impressive, also grubby that had a lucky tournament into PL, he isnt as good as those who beat, sometimes you have an uperhand while being the underdog. So that was the biggest upset, that grubby went through for sure, one of the most overrated players in sc2, but sick in wc3
not sure Grubby is overrated or you're trolling quite a bit... He's got a huge following so much is true, and he CAN beat MC and Nerchio - already did in WoL and now continued to do so. In Nerchio's case WoL Zerg helped quite a bit as well(not that he is an inferior player but that much can be said in hindsight).
But damn I am so happy for ToD ;-D, that guy deserves the success - back when he was in fnatic he basically did everything right and jumped through a loot of hoops, went to KR and trained very hard there yet very closely did not qualify for Code A (iirc), was team captain when they acquired the Koreans and despite all that effort it was not crowned by big success. Let's hope now with XMG he shows what he really is capable of.

I really like that they got through it quickly and didn't bother prolonging it. For me personally, it made an otherwise uninteresting league more exciting to watch.

It was six, Ret was in premier as well. ToD and Tefel are the only players from the challenger qualifiers to make it through.
I'm really happy that this thread speacks mainly of the 2 french players that did really well in those qualifiers.
ToD plays really solid actually, and I'm really happy to see him compete in the season 2. I bet he will go out of the first stage group, and possibly even qualify for round of 8. Dayshi's play are really fantastic those last weeks, and he will be a great replacement for Stephano in the frenches heart ! Hope for a breackout performance live before the end of the year.
I'm just a little bit sad that ToD qualified ... His duo with Kaelaris was really a great casting team.... It's ok if Appollo casts also the round of 32 next season

well this just escalated very quickly haha it's clearly idra = robert baratheon naniwa = viserys targaryen
Dayshi is on a roll though can't wait to see more of his games. I hope it's not a streak cause he was really out multi-tasking people right and left; so much fun to watch

It is amazing to think that 7 of the 8 players who were in the Round of 16 lost their matches. They had two good chances to stay in the Premier league and missed out on both. That's pretty rough.
Thanks! That group is actually not that easy for MC, going to be interesting. The all Protoss group also happens to have a really good level, that one will go crazy.
Tod was amazing, and also such a good caster, very pleased for him . . . Maybe we can get some decent casters on Proleague as well at some point Whiplash :S

Whiplash really, really, really isn't the problem about the PL casting...
