The final qualifier has ended. With so many strong players fighting for those coveted 2 spots, it was inevitable that there would be heartbreak. But for Siw and Shuttle, it would be triumphant.
Siw was an old school former Empire player come again. After being out of the scene for months, Empire gave him one more chance for old time's sake and recruited the Russian player. Siw was able to repay that faith and qualified while beating Nightend, Xigua, Welmu, and Xlord.
On the other side of the bracket was the Korean Terran player from Clarity Gaming, Shuttle, who currently resides in the Clarity Gaming house in New York. While not having any of the name power of the other Koreans in the bracket, he was able to outlast finale and take out Tails on his way to qualifying. He beat a few other notables in Harstem and Targa along the way ensuring his spot in WCS EU and becoming the 4th member of team Korea in the WCS EU. Shuttle remains the only Korean to qualify for the WCS EU Premier league.
After 4 long qualifiers, we have our final 8 participants of Season 1 of WCS EU Premier league in 2013.

Dude Mentalking had been doing SO many Playhem and daily/weekly tournaments, and I am glad that he was the only Korean to make it through the qualifiers. Gives him some spotlight! Now the Premier League EU will be quite close to evenly represented across the board, both race wise and nationality wise.
As for the rest that qualified this week, I believe that one of the Terrans will be the strongest going into the main tournament. Strelok's TvP was absolutely devastating, using mech so god damn well and just crushing everyone. I see him and Feast doing well here!!
Can't wait until groups are announced so we can see how it might play out!

Most of these guys are pretty small-time, what happened to all of the top players? Is there a lot of seeding going on? No offense to these guys, they definitely accomplished a lot, but I know we have some real monsters in Europe that should have crapped on the competition in these qualifiers.

Yeah but 24 invited, that's a lot and considering only 3 european terrans were invited, lot of them were left behind. Big fishes were already invited :D
I guess it's too early to cry wolf... terran. It's really cool to see how the EU terrans are playing a somewhat different meta game than the korean counterparts.

Xigua, Targa, JohnnyReccho, Xlord and more that I probably forgot. I knew about all these people before this tourney but Bunny, Siw and Krass were no names to me.
The most prominent European Zerg who wasn't invited and failed to qualify is LoWeLy, who got 4th place at WCS Europe 2012.

I guess you didn't see Krass play? His multitasking is ridiculous. He was putting up constant aggression with both (double) drops and frontal attacks simultanously, while keeping up great unit retention. Also, he showed both bio and mech play in the later rounds of the qualifiers. I can't wait to see his games in the premier league, since aggressive playstyle like his is extremelly appealing to me. His constant pressuring kind of reminds me of Naama, but relying on perfect control rather than on gimmicky suprising attacks and all-ins. I also imagine, there is a reason why Bunny and Siw edged out the competition.
Love the triumphs of the lesser known players grabbing their spots, and I love the spread of countries that got a spot. A great qualifier that hopefully will give the European esports a shot in the arm of new fans!
Krass is well known in the EU scene, as well as Siw. Bunny is quite the mystery but eh, if he did this over some players like goody or beastqt, he clearly deserves his spot

Hellbats is a good skill to have.
Saying there are no big names for Zerg in the qualifier seems fair ... if Big EU Terran or protoss actualy made it true, with the exeption of Happy and Feast i don't see these as big names either so no idea why you only look at zergs that have not done much resently, look at the other names aswell and you can say exactly the same thing.
All in all your statement simply makes no sense at all and is utterly flawed.

I'm glad that the Koreans didn't just walk through Europe; the only Korean who made it is even on a foreign team which I think justifies using the EU qual a little more. Now, NA on the other hand I think will have a lot more of the Koreans making it through but I am hopeful that NA holds strong.

The top zergs are aldready invited but if this was wol we would still see a ton of Zergs go through these qualifiers because Infestor. After leaning heavily on the Infestor for such a long time this is all a natural process. I do think that hellbats and widow mines will get nerfed though.

Sigh... Europe did not manage to hold on the last qualifiers. Oh well... -.- It appears that Germany and Russia have the most representatives in Code S, each with four players.
Hilarious how pretty much the same zergs balance whine with impunity all over TL. The funny thing is, if you take out the Koreans, there are still more European zergs in the premier competition (9) than European terrans (8). People should stop complaining about the current balance of the game at such a high level. But I am afraid it is true that zergs are having a rough time in the current state of the game and it seems slightly easier for the terran players now with the new units. I know ladder does not prove anything at all - but as a protoss player things did not change that much -, but it looks like more and more WoL diamond terran players are making it to masters these days and that zerg are dropping to lower leagues because there is a massive abuse of the new units. New units are significantly affecting the game and it is sad to see very good players losing to people considered to be inferiorsin terms of skills. Just my pov.

Googling that for you reveals that yes, only 8 stay in Code S, the rest drop down to Challenger (16 from first group stage) (8 from second group stage). Explanatory graph
I heartily agree that we should see how it will look after the first season, rather than whine immediately.
I'm a little sad though for TargA, who lost in the last deciding round to Shuttle to not qualify, XlorD, who has been dominating the german scene this year and barely didn't make it as well, and finally for WhiteRa. Everyone loves WhiteRa.

About big engagements : A lot of zergs is trying to flank, snipe mines with mutas, detonate clumps of mines with 3 banelings. At the same time you have to keep up your macro and injects plus ideally creep spread. And imagine that drop hits at 2 places at once during push which is standard. Now when you look at drop location just for a moment you will miss exact locations of burrowed mines. At some point you have to just attack position or sack your expansion. In WOL zergs had possibilities to counterattack, now with mines and hellbats counter is a lot less likely to do enough damage. Only after tier 3 and ultralisk tech you can trade with mine based army.
Overseer are extremly slow even with speed upgrade, decent terrans snipe them and have low vision range. If you take overseer with flock of mutas he will be vulnurable or you slow whole clump to overseer speed. There is possiblity for overseer to die to 2 mine hits if u move him just slightly behind max vision range. And all this for cost of 1 roach.
About metagame: Terrans realized that after 2-3 cost effective engagements they can simply rally units and overpower zergs. They have two most cost effective units in game, best mineral sink and unlimited mules due to new greedy builds. People praise Life but bust timing will be figured eventually. Meanwhile terrans are getting better with mine placement and incorporate hellbats to counter ling flocks. Without balance patch i am willing to bet even in Korea TvZ will become problem.

The funny thing is, if you take out the Koreans, there are still more European zergs in the premier competition (9) than European terrans (8). Perhaps you should whine that Korean zergs are not participating in the European scene as much as the Korean terrans (oh, wait. There are also more Code S zerg (12) than terrans (11).)
This is where I need Incontrol for the voice-over: ''Now that zergs are not winning ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, the game is broken''.
Only because they were invited. We will see how it will all look after first season. Does anyone know if WCS EU follows same rule as Code S, as in only top 8 stay in Code S and rest need to battle it out with Challenger League players?
After these kind of threads, i had come to the conclussion that protoss players are the nicest guys in the scene. I mean, they are normally underpopulated, but they are not crying for balance every other post.
Congrats to the qualified, was a hell of a run. I can't wait for the premier to begin :D

How long will it take before mass "sad zealot" threads will pop up?

Hahahah, That was a nice joke.
The qualifiers were pretty fun, I hope the NA ones will be good.

"Why Zerg so OP 8+ page thread on toss section of bnet SC2 forums" seems to disagree with that. Either way congrats to both who qualified. As far no Zerg someone already said that most of best zergs are already seeded.

There are still Code A qualifiers, with 8 spots up for grasp, so not all hope is lost yet!
I think zergs are just struggling because they've been broodlording their way to victory for so many months they forgot everything else, its like relearning how to do everything else at a high level again, they're still capable, just need practice, wheras the other races have been doing different things all the time anyway.

I hate the ones who jumped ships for easier money, that's all.
yeah man, not like they need money for a living or anything. fyi kespa was actually really seriously considering switching to WCS AM, but that didn't go through
Congratz for ESL they stood strong with 4days of 1k+ peepz trying to qualify.
Positives :
1. Great qualifier tournament; 2. Really entertaining and fun; 3. Alot of streams and therefore alot of choice for consumers; 4. The amateur casters were not so bad i my opinion. Ofcourse some are better then others but every extra stream is positive when in round 1 u have 512+ matches.
Things for next time to think about :
1. Stream lag was abnoxious on many channels (but understandable); 2. Sometimes 6 out of 10 streams casted the same match, could be better coordinated; 3. Downtime between matches on wcs europe; 4. Sometimes there was just 1 english channel, not many for a EU tournament. I would suggest getting 5+ english streams next time.
Ofcourse i understand with these sort of tournaments u have to make choices seeing the short preparationtime, money etcetc. But, all in all i had alot of fun watching all the matches. Hopefully ESL will cast live again next qualifiers... there really fun, casting of replays isnt half so exciting as live broadcast of 512+ matches at the same time.

You realise Shuttle lives in New York and plays from New York? Daisy, Sting, Arthur, MC, ForGG will play from Europe as far as i'm aware
So the only players that fall into that category are Tails, Finale, MMA and MVP
Thanks for letting me know. I will only hate Tails, Finale, MMA and MVP then.
You may hate mma and mvp but you cant deny that wcs eu will probably be a three way tournament between stephano, mma and mvp. Personally i think mvp will take all champion titles for eu if his health issues are gone

I can deny.
Well you may say what you want but wcs eu has considerably less top talent. I see maybe forgg, vortix, naniwa and nerchio having a chance to beat any of those three guys. Also it depends on groups and brackets but i think those three guys will probably be present in all the finals and ro4s

They were invited.
Not to mention, Mvp at least is in Code B, let's say he worked his way up to Code A for one season. There goes an entire Code S season of points, then he got into Code S after another season. There is no way he would get enough points to qualify for the world finals even if at the moment he was the best player in the world, because of how dumb WCS Korea is, not to mention the fact that the same amount of money is on the line everywhere so considering that it's pro-gamers job to play games and win money, means you have to go where the money is.
Nice to see the ridiculous idea that was "invites to HotS WCS based on 2012 WoL results" being balanced out with more Terrans and Toss making it through.
On April 19 2013 11:17 IdrA wrote: id say one of these things is not like the others but there isnt even one of them lololol
i'd say the thing that's not like the others is Terran, cuz: theoretical average = 8 slots / 3 races = 2.66 per race Z:0 P:2 T:6 so Terran is even further from the theoretical average than Zerg is
That might have been true if not all good zergs and protosses were invited :-P
What is it with you people failing to see this?
So much easier to blame balance than use brain <3
Before you guys call us brainless and failures, consider that we actually have noticed what you point out, which does not change the math above, and yes - imagine that - it can be irrelevant to balance at all, so why even bring that up.
Group G looks frightening. Poor KrasS, hard time to get into it, and then gets in a group with Stephano, Grubby and Babyknight... (http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2013_WCS_Season_1_Europe/Premier )
We heard any reasons for this officially? Seems unjustifiable under almost any criterion. Makes me doubt they actually had a legitimate evenly applied criteria and just made it up.
I really think this will make the foreigner scene into something more than Thorzain, Naniwa, Scarlett, Huk and other good foreigners who have braved the GSL/GSTL. The GSL-format is really good and I think we will see the average skill level in EU/NA increase a lot.

Koreans that would easily qualify were already seeded. USA is where the real battle against the Korean onslaught will take place.
Well, u never know... peeps say eu-scene alot stronger than NA scene, i do not know it thats true. What i do know is that having 20 koreans doing the qualifiers is alot harder to hold then only a few. I wish everybody glhf
