With WCS Korea competition already underway, we'd like to highlight some important dates and details for the fast-approaching WCS America and WCS Europe leagues.
Since there was no preceding season to qualify players for Season 1 of WCS America and WCS Europe, we’re going to do things a little differently from how they’ll be done in future seasons.
For this inaugural season of WCS America and WCS Europe, 24 players will be invited to compete in each region based on their performance in past StarCraft II tournaments. In addition, a round of special qualifiers will be held to determine 8 players who will join the invited 24 (more details soon). Once all 32 players are locked in, play will commence and run for a few weeks.
The rest of Season 1 will then play out via the same structure planned for future seasons. The top 8 players in each region will compete in their region's finals, which will be a weekend offline event. Once all three regional finals have concluded, the top performers from each region will battle in an epic global Season Finals at a live event hosted by one of the regions. To seed that event, the top 6 players from the host region will be joined by the top 5 players from each of the two other regions to engage in a fierce tournament in order to crown the best StarCraft II player in the world for that season.
Important dates for Season 1 in each region are listed below. Note that the qualification rounds for future seasons take place during the current season. So, in addition to the intense Season 1 competition described here, the qualifiers for Season 2 will be taking place. Stay tuned for further details.
Date - Region - Round
April 4 - Korea: League play begins
April 14 - Europe: Special qualifiers begin
April 20 - America: Special qualifiers begin
April 23 - Europe: League play begins (round of 32)
April 28 - America: League play begins (round of 32)
May 14* - Korea: Regional league finals begin (round of 8)
May 25 - Europe: Regional league finals begin (round of 8)
May 31 - America: Regional league finals begin (round of 8)
*League Finals for WCS Korea will be held offline from May 14 through June 1, rather than over the course of a weekend.
All of the dates listed above are subject to change. We'll be providing more information on broadcast dates and times for WCS Season 1 as soon as possible.

There are a lot of no-name players right now that are superior to a lot of the successful WOL guys. Blizzard's choice to seed from WOL results shows how out of touch they are with the scene. Quite disappointing that so many people are going to fight over 8 slots.

They never get a chance to qualify straight up against "popular" WOL guys for you to find out. They couldn't do it at MLG because that was invite and now here we have WCS with Blizzard and yet again with the invites.

Well, that's kind of the thing with noname players... they tend to lack names, so it's hard to name them

probably going to be a lot of people invited to the qualifiers so I can't imagine anyone who would be missed out.

This is only season 1 dates. It sounds like its been a scramble to get it going in time for this year at all. Hopefully for season 2 onwards it will be more offline play.

I'm confused by the thread, but still good news with the message of the thread!

Looking forward to EU/NA tournaments, enjoying the GSL in the mean time.

I'm excited that things are finally rolling on the NA and EU side of WCS.

This is the best news thread I've read recently. Even without paying attention to the actual OP content ^^

It will start with WCS season 2.
Does anyone know what are Blizzard's criteria for invites ?

Code A/B (challenger/qualifier) for EU/NA will start soon after S (premier)
Remember that Code A is not really a standalone tournament by itself; as players are knocked out of S they are fed into it. It's a constantly running relegation/promotion tournament.

According this article http://www.esfiworld.com/wcs-america-europe-formats-detailed-invited-players-to-be-announced-april-12th/
''MLG will only be covering travel expenses for players living in the Americas. However, if a player first travels to any city in the United States, MLG will then pay for their flight to the MLG studio from that U.S. city.'' ''Flight and hotel will be provided at no cost to players who are traveling from within Europe.''
Korean who want to change region have to pay for the flight form Korea to US(or Germany) by themselves.

So if this whole first season is generally invites only, it is now up to Blizzard to determine if any Koreans are on hand in EU and NA? Should be interesting to see who is invited.

They are setting this all up quickly. They can't create both code S, A and B overnight without cutting a few corners. Invites are fine for the first season, since those aren't good enough to stay will get weeded out.

didnt they say that for qualifiers they are inviting the grand master league players of a region?

I wonder on what merits the invitees are chosen from? Maybe it's the last years WCS or some players that reached far in the DH/MLG events

Would make sense if they invited the players from last years WCS EU and WCS NA. So yea I think they will go with that

I honestly feel like having all of these invite only tournaments is creating way too much red tape to break into the scene. How many NEW players have we seen in HoTS aside from Korean pros in GSTL? None really. Not even during the beta did we have a lot of stand out players. HTOMario only stands out because he plays mech at a relatively high level.

i agree, more open qualifiers, more newcomers, more interesting sc2 stories.

Only if the open qualifiers is played offline. Nobodies looking to see a bunch of weak amateurs that do great in online tournaments but get burned by some code B nobody Korean in offline.

How is that ANY different from a lot of the foreigners we currently have? How is an amateur supposed to get the funds to fly out to an open qualifier just for a SHOT where he may or may not be successful? Face it, online qualifiers are a necessary evil if you actually want more people to participate in the competitive scene. Or not it's just going to be the same freaking circlejerk we've gotten since WoL beta with 75% of the same players who get propped up in the scene receiving invite after invite. The reason why so many Koreans have come out of nowhere is based off of the open nature of GSL and of course Team Leagues giving lesser known players a chance to impress.
The closed nature of western tournaments have stifled the growth of the scene for a very long time. And I want to be very clear that I mean growth in actual competitors, not in viewers or prize money.

Invite only... and it was supposed to give incentive to all American players, cool logic.
