Make times, you'll hear of StarCraft II personalities making predictions about specific matches. But how much do they really know about the scene? To find out, we gathered seven notable personalities in the StarCraft scene along with the winner of TeamLiquid's first season of Fantasy GSTL. Together, they will have to complete in a fantasy draft league to determine who's most in touch with the KeSPa Korean scene (and who's most lucky). All bragging rights go to the winner.

First, the rules of this special draft league. If you don't care much for rules, feel free to skip on to the next section to find out who will be competing and what they think of their chances in this league.

+ Show Spoiler [THE RULES] +
Summary

Everyone who wants to play is going to split up into 8-man leagues and draft teams, like they do on other fantasy sites for sports like basketball, hokey, football, etc. You’ll have spots to fill on your team, like Zerg players, a Proteam, a flex position a bench to move players in and out of the starting lineup and so on. Each week your team will face off against another team and the team whose lineup scores the most points during that week gets a win. At the end of a predetermined number of weeks we will enter a two-week “playoffs” with the top four teams in each 8-man league to determine the fantasy winners.

For the purposes of this first season, rounds 4 and 5 will be the group stage rounds while round 6 will be used for the playoff.

General Rules

Eight participants is the ideal size for a Starcraft Fantasy league. There will be a cut to the top four teams for playoffs after a predetermined week of Proleague. Playoffs will last two weeks and be single elimination. There will be a third place match the same week as the finals match.

A week lasts from right before games begin on the first night of the week for Proleague and goes until the last game finishes on the fourth night. A match between league managers lasts one week. Match pairings will rotate every week. No two participants will play each other twice until they have played each other participant once. Unlike regular fantasy proleague, we will not be redrafting teams every round.

Drafting

Order for drafting will be chosen randomly and proceed in the following format until every team has drafted 12 players. Once a player or team has been drafted, no one else will be able to draft that player to his team.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

And repeated until each roster is full.

Each participant must submit their own draft rankings for their top 88(8*11) choices in order to determine the order in which players will be drafted to team unless a time can be agreed upon for a live draft. There can be some people who want to live draft while the rest just submit rankings also. If a participant does not submit a ranking and/or does not show up to the live draft, the default rankings will be used for that participant.

Note: Drafting by default rankings or with a turned in set of personal rankings will still ensure that you have at minimum two players of each race and at least one proteam by your twelfth pick. So your options from best to worst include:
  1. Show up at live draft. This makes it more fun for everyone else too.
  2. Submit your ranking
  3. Do nothing and use the default rankings

There are exactly 102 Players + Pro-Teams.

Lineup & Bench

There are 8 positions. At any time, your team must include at least 2 Terrans, 2 Zergs, 2 Protoss, and 1 Pro-Team. The Ace position can be filled by any player(non Pro-Team). Think of your Pro-Team as just another position.

11 Spots Total per Roster
8 Spots in Lineup per week:
2 Terran
2 Zerg
2 Protoss
1 Ace (any race, aka flex position)
1 Pro-Team
3 Spots on the Bench (any race or team)

The maximum number of players/teams on any roster is 11. Any participant may choose to have less than 11 players if he chooses, but never more.

Lineups will be due prior to the first scheduled Proleague match during the week. Lineups may be submitted at any time prior to their due date. If a lineup is not submitted by the time it is due, the lineup from the previous week will be used. Once the deadline has passed, lineups may not be changed until the following week. Because you're just comparing scores with your opponent and not literally going up head-to-head, there's not big advantage to submitting your lineup after your opponent.

Example Line Up submission
+ Show Spoiler [Line Up] +

(T)Hwasin, (T)DarkElf
(Z)ZerO, (Z)Kwanro
(P)Bisu, (P)Shuttle
(T)go.go
STX SouL

Each participant’s roster, both the lineup and bench, will be viewable by all other participants in the league.

Matches

Every week, you will be matched up against another player randomly. You will not be matched up against the same player a second time. until you match up with every other player at least once.

(Scoring will be the same as regular fantasy scoring) The exception is that streak points in the regular proleague format will not be counted.

+ Show Spoiler [Example Match-ups] +

If your score total for the week is greater than your opponent's, your win the match and receive one match victory in the final standings. In this example, GTR, Manifesto, Hot_bid, semioldguy each received one match victory. After one round, we should end up with something close to this:

Trading, Dropping, and Adding

Trading between participants will be available until a predetermined deadline(10 minutes before the first match of the week on Saturday). You may offer or accept trades between other participants in your league.

Players may not be traded or dropped if they are currently active in your lineup. Players may be traded or dropped at any time if they are on your bench. If they are not on your bench they may only be traded or dropped after the week is complete, and before the next one begins. Trades and drops may be proposed at any time, but will not be honored until the players in the trade or drop meet the above conditions.

The commissioner is allowed to veto any trades he deems unsportsmanlike. This will prevent one owner who is struggling from helping out a friend who is near the top. For example, A trade of Flash for ssak will generally not be honored.

Pickups will be allowed until a predetermined deadline(10 minutes before the first match of the week on Saturday). In order to make a Pickup there must be an available spot on your bench to place the player you wish to pick up. You may pick up a free agent at any time. When you pick him up, he will be placed on your bench.

Waivers

Waivers is a period where everyone can try to stake a claim to player(s), but they have to operate by a pecking order. The lower you drafted, the higher up on waivers you are and thus you're in the best position to pick up an undrafted/dropped player. When you successfully complete a waiver claim you go back to the bottom of the pecking order.

All players that were undrafted will first go to Waivers to give you guys a fair opportunity to claim them and drop players that you find undesirable. Any player that is dropped must go through waivers for a few days before they become a Free Agent. When a player becomes a Free Agent, they're up for grabs - first come, first serve. If you have multiple Waiver claims, you must order them.

Playoffs

There will be a cut to the top four participants who will proceed to the league playoffs. In the event of an equal record between two players, the player with the most overall points throughout the league will be given the higher rank. In the event of a tie in total points, the participant who has the highest scoring player is given the higher rank. If this is also tied proceed down to the next highest scoring players until there is not a tie. In the extremely unlikely event that everything is exactly tied, a coin flip will determine who is higher ranked.

Playoff matches will not be ended in a draw. If the score between two participants is equal at the end of a playoff match, the participant with the higher scoring “Ace” player is determined the winner of the match.

OK so super pumped to hear TL was doing this as I've been obsessed in the past with fantasy football (the sport where you throw a ball and score touchdowns and stuff for you non-Americans). Didn’t prepare as much as I would’ve liked for this draft, so a lot of picks were just reflex.

Anyway on to the draft, my mentality going in was to be as terran heavy as possible. Wasn't incredibly aware of rule specifics until a little bit later as far as having to field 2 toss/terran/zerg but that's just making more excuses. Anyway herO was still around when it was my turn and at pick 7 I really couldn't not pick him. Next I knew I wanted a Terran and Reality seemed like a great option, he performed quite well in the last round. From there it was basically picking by feel and anticipating the two picks bamboo was going for after me.

Overall semi-happy with my team, we’ll see what happens week 1 but definitely looking forward to the round! Now someone tell the korean leagues to go live at a manageable time for us eastern US time zoners x.x

Axslav
I picked my team with the intention of first getting as many terran aces as I could and then looking to acquire the strongest protoss and zerg players left. As teams can potentially score a lot of points I wanted to get two strong teams so each week I could field a team that had relatively easy matches. I'm feeling confident that I'll place well although going up against TT1 in the first week with Fantasy having to take on Flash on the opening match is making me nervous.

I'd have to say the weak spot of my team is the protosses. My zerg lineup isn't the best either but they're still the best zergs of their respective teams. Protosses have been doing very well on Korean ladder and most of the proleague teams are fielding protoss heavy lineups. This gives me half a second of doubt about my terran centric team but that doubt is quickly overwhelmed by my faith in Fantasy, Ty and Skyhigh.

Frodan
Fantasy Proleague is an extremely fun way for players to objectively measure results and performance of their favorite SC2 players. What makes FPL so compelling is that you must pick the superstar players (i.e. Flash, Innovation, Roro) as well as the foundational players (i.e. Light, Dear, Trap). Players that you normally do not pay attention to are how you separate yourself from the pack.

This is why I love FPL. You essentially become a virtual coach within the KeSPA system. You learn players' strong maps, match-ups, and likelihood of lineup chances. You pick based off player values and set the line-ups based on percentage of success. I follow SPL much closer be cause of the fantasy league and I enjoy it much more because of it!
I had a pretty favorable draft position for first couple of rounds, but I did not play my position in a strong fashion. At the time of my 3rd pick, I was moments away from picking Zero, a consistent gosu from WJS. Then MrBitter went on a a big Hitman-hype tirade on Sacsri and why he'll be a monster. With a MrBitter guarantee, what could go wrong? Lots, apparently. Shortly after, I picked Bravo because I thought he was on the upswing because of his 3-win streak against S2 and Crazy, both solid contributors. But alas, he is not playing this week and Axslav called me out: "First Sacsri and now Bravo?? ...Frodan your (sic) the worst."

Clearly, you can tell I am a terrible at picking wisely whether it be FPL, Dota 2, or my love life. I feel like I drafted pretty poorly with my middle picks, but I will make strong decisions with waivers and trades. I will not win this season of FPL Draft, but I will not be in last place.

Rotterdam
Last season was my first season of ever participating in fantasy pro league and I really enjoyed it. In the start, Proleague had an overwhelming amount of new players for me and it was hard to remember them all. The top dogs are easy to get familiar with. But unfortunately, the mid tier guys were unknown for me and playing FPL has helped me a lot. Unfortunately my anti-team heavily outperformed my regular team last season ( dat rotti Skill :D ) but I got to know those guys very well and learned a lot about them.

Looking at how the draft went, I was really quite pleased with my team but unfortunately one of my top dogs ( Taeja ) is not playing in r1 and that makes things a little harder for me. Despite all that, I'm still confident, with my favorite and best protoss player in the world in my team, I know I'll be fine. Freaking pokebunny did pick the guy I wanted to pick 3 rounds in a row in the draft so I hope he finishes last ( karma's a bitch yo ) and I have to stay strong and resist the temptation of TT1 offering me horrible trades. He pretends he has my best interest but I know he doesn't love me and just love my players, hopefully I'll stay strong and [P]revail.

Whiplash
Being a proleague caster, I of course jumped on the oppurtunity to do a fantasy league with other personalities. I know all the players better then almost everyone else out there, and I feel like that gives me a bit of an edge when deciding who joins my roster. My team is based around solid picks and players who have proven consistency, as well as some calculated risks.

The drafting phase was actually really fun and entertaining. I got 4th pick, which is decent I suppose in a snake draft order, and overall I am pretty satisfied with my picks... although I did want to grab soO over Zest/aLive! I can't wait to see how the rest of the season turns out, HoTS is a new game and we will definitely see some shifting in terms of who performs and who fizzles out.

TT1
Out of all the rosters, my team has the most depth. I can easily field 2 regular pl players from each race every week. There aint no way im gonna lose to dese noobs.

The Proven Champion: Fantasy GSTL Season 1 Winner

mrbamboo
Drafting was fun. Really cool to hang out with all these starcraft personalities. I got a bit shafted as the last pick in the random ordering. But that's okay, I need a little handicap to make it fair. After all I've already won a fantasy starcraft league. We made the drafts before the line up was published, so the results were pretty interesting in hind sight.

In terms of the final teams, I think TT1 has got by FAR the best team. He was first pick so that makes sense. All his players are in the line-up for the first week which is pretty insane. After that I think Whiplash has a really good team. I thought his team was decent, but then the line-up got published and Bisu is playing twice which rounds out his core team really well. Axslav's team looked average until the line-up reveals too. Very surprised both Skyhigh and Mini is playing two matches. My team originally looked pretty strong and now just above average as it turns out Last isn't even being played. That and JYP only playing one but not both match makes me sad. Pokebunny's team looked bad but then Classic is playing both games (and switched to protoss wtf?), so it's not too terrible anymore. He might actually give me a run for my money in the first week's head to head. Especially if STX don't loses a series. The other teams just turned out kind of bad. I really regret picking Last instead of Cure, and missed getting CJ as my team by 1 pick.

The Initial Draft

We did our initial draft on Wednesday before the lineups were released. As a result, some of these picks may seem a bit strange. Also, note that Pokebunny picked Classic, thinking he was a Terran before we knew he switched races. In order to not punish Pokebunny too much, we'll let him use Classic as a Terran for the rest of the league. Also, keep in mind that these picks went in a snake draft order with TT1 going first, so you can follow the order of the picks.

First week lineups coming soon. Meanwhile, comment on what you think of the teams and who will win this league. Cheer for your favorite StarCraft II personality as they attempt to win Teamliquid's first personality draft league.

Here's my team: Axslav, Frodan, Pokebunny.

(kidding, i thought at first it's like a team of famous esports personalities that we get to pick in our teams)

(on a second thought, there could be like second order of fantasy functionality... picking pickers... hmmm)

I was hoping for a fantasy league where instead of selecting players and getting points for their wins, team wins, etc., you select casters and get points when they produce insightful analysis and lose points when they slip and get a fact wrong.

I think TT1 will win, because:

1. TT1's a beast at Starcraft Fantasy Teams
2. He got first pick
3. He has Myungsik on his team, which shows great hipster knowledge.

man, I reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllly wish we could make our own leagues and play like this. I've been a fantasy football nerd for a decade.

fantasy and jangbi are not first round picks. I have no idea why parting lasted as long as he did. zero at the end of the third and jaehoon in the middle of the fourth both seem like bargains to me. sOs not going until the back half of the second round is madness. I agree that TT1 has the best team. I think whiplash is #2.

Like the teams of TT1, Whiplash and mrbamboo, don't really dig Frodan's team and I think especially Axslav picked awfully, I don't even understand why you'd pick all those people over other available ones.

mrbamboo did his best in the worst position, but I don't get Jangbi as a first pick.

i actually think me and axslav have the best teams seeing as u have to field 7 players each week while having 2 players per race in ur lu. were pretty much the only ones who can field 7 players this week (he kinda got lucky w/ mini tho : D)

also finding good terran players was extremely important because kespa t's are super scarce, me and axslav are the only ones who have 2 "guaranteed to play" terrans in our lineup

Man. I can't believe STX is playing a race switched Classic over Last. I guess a lot of the GSL players are not getting sent as much in proleague and I should've considered that.

Jangbi is gonna destroy faces. I liked him better than sOs due to KHAN going to ace match more often, so a bit more potential for the extra points there. And I needed a top zerg + top protoss as my first 2 picks. All the good terrans are gone so I figured I could wait on that and still get some mid tier terrans later. I don't think Stats and Parting are better than Jangbi.

even if khan gets to the ace match more, which you can't really predict, you would imagine they're going to send out Roro more often than not.

A lot of players not playing this week were picked. We shall see how this will pan out.

Can I pick Tastosis? They're probably pretty good, since they don't really spend much time casting ever anymore
