http://pandodaily.com/2013/02/01/sources-ziff-davis-is-close-to-buying-ign/

Ziff Davis the reported buyer for below 100 million. It previously sold for 650 million.

It’s no secret that News Corp. has been trying to sell gaming portal IGN for some time. It even floated an aspirational price to the Wall Street Journal: $100 million.

We’ve heard all sorts of rumors about who the buyer could be since that article — even including at one point the raging LA upstart Machinima.

PandoDaily has learned from two sources that a deal is finally very close and that the buyer is one people weren’t expecting: Ziff Davis. We couldn’t get confirmation of the price, but we’ll keep digging. We’re told it’s below the $100 million asking price, but that it was appealing anyway because it was a cash offer.

Ziff Davis is a digital media company that operates PCMag Digital Network among other properties focusing on the technology space. The company, itself, was acquired by business cloud services J2 Global Communications in November 2012 for $167 million in cash.

It will be interesting to see if/how this affects IPL. I figure it will hurt more than anything not having the backing of of a giant like NewsCorp.

Hopefully IPL stays strong, especially with all the new production value to IPL recently

Yeah I'd love a statement from David Ting on if it could affect IPL.

Don't think so. If they wanted to sell it all along, they didn't invest that much money anymore into IGN.

I'm not a business expert or anything but I would assume that this buy out would have absolutely no short term effects on IPL and such, but it may have long term effects down the track?

Which is to say that if anything bad were to come of this it would be a few months down the track, and with plenty of opportunity for intervention, so to speak.

However it it's also possible that it works out for the better, should their buyer happen to want to grow the site and its (currentl) projects.

If EG has almost 100 million dollars my lord (I know they don't) .

Also I wonder how this will affect future IPL's if any at all.

I don't get it : news corp bought ign for 650 mill and they're selling it for 100 ?
What happened ? Did ign loose that much value in those 8 years ?
Or do they just want to get rid of it real quick ?

They bought IGN Entertainment, which is the bundle of many sites, such as IGN, Gamespy, Askmen,.... for 650mil.

This may be an odd cross promotion but David Ting will be on Climbing The Ladder on Tuesday to discuss IPL6, it may be beneficial to tune in to that. Perhaps a caller will ask about it or they'll ask the question if its asked enough in their thread. It's probably the best chance we'll have to ask him directly his thoughts on that sale.
Just chill man.

(But NewsCorp do have a history of massively overpaying for online stuff. Also is IGN really worth even $100m...?)

I hope the new buyer whether it is Ziff Davis or someone else, still keeps IPL where it is.

Ziff had some pretty major publications back in the day. They were recently bought by someone. They were quite instrumental in a few tech sites as well so it will be interesting to see how this goes

I'm not a business expert either but I wouldn't be so sure about that. If a potential buyer has a different approach to what IGN is currently doing it could mean that there will be a big overhaul which could affect IPL quite a bit.

David Ting said there would be more IPLs in the future, and just because they are losing money, doesn't mean they have to stop a pretty successful business. Remember IPL isn't just StarCraft, they have LoL and Shootmania as other games.

Exactly, IPL doesn't have all of its eggs in one basket as far as competition goes. I think that IPL's weekly content is superb relative to other major leagues. I will tune into rebroadcasts all the time Fight Club especially is fantastically fun (though I preferred HyuN club myself)

I hope so, I do enjoy IPL's live events much more than MLG's.

But did David Ting say that before or after IGN was bought? Because if I bought a company and they had a product that was losing them money (IPL) that would be one of the first things I'd cut.

I really hope that IGN isn't in trouble or anything. I suppose if sponsors are continuing to sponsor though the everything can't be too bad.

I still don't understand why IGN has fallen so hard in worth. Between them and gamespot I don't really check many other gaming oriented review/news sites. Also I wouldn't worry too much about IPL, I imagine they will keep it going.

The 650 million OP speaks of, wasn't that back in 2005-2006 when IGN Entertainment existed which was allot of other sites and just and not the current IGN? Didn't they like sell off allout of IGN to what it is now?

When they switched owners before in like 06 or something.

IPL is fairly independent financially so this may not affect them at all, wouldn't worry until there is something to worry about.

Yeah that is extremely true. That said, who needs game reviews these days anyways. Basically you can tell what is going to be good or not way before it comes out. Reviews are mostly just for entertainment purposes nowadays.

Well reviews work but only if you know the person that reviewed it and his/her tastes.
Giantbomb does this well cause the reviewer aint just a name, you can see an hear these people on their site and after a while you know which games they like and not.

Wow, big news, do hope the new buyers have a new direction for IGN.
Could quite possible mean the cancellation of IPL 6...even if not because the new owners don't want it, just because it is to soon since they have taken it over and such.

Yeah why have different standards depending on the market for said game. Honestly Those 2 games can't be and should not be compared. It is a stupid example.

IPL is the only sc2 premium service I purchase beside two seasons of GSLs in the past (light tickets). They roll out amazing content at a rather affordable price (GSL light ticket costed more and the stream quality is really meh).

But given the amount of "free content" out there: will people be willing to spend money on esports to keep the ball rolling?

People don't have to spend money on eSports to keep the ball rolling. Game publishers in the past few years have gone to organizations such as ESL/IPL/MLG to promote their games in the eSports stage, just as an advertising tool.

Are there any details of IGN's asset and income distribution available to the public? It would be interesting to see what portion of IGN makes up IPL's activities, and from that proposed sale price drive out a value for that specific business.

Pretty sure you're bullshitting/have no idea what you're talking about. Link or nope.

It's like they gave me legos and demanded the manner in which they are played with. Oh well, at least I have legos.

Just out of a blue here...

Didn't Mark Cuban mentioned in his twitter that he is interested in being part of eSport? He did show up at MLG and such.

Ryan Wyatt from Machinima tweeted that the acquisition is said to have happened for under $100m. Who knows though!

I hope IPL stays the way it is.
