The information was released earlier on Millenium's TV, Maddelisk joins [M].

An interview of her is also posted available here :

The Maddelisk nickname is well-known in the Starcraft 2 community. But who is Maddelisk in real life ?

Hi! I'm Madeleine. I'm working part time at Stockholm University, doing my Ph.D in Maths. But more importantly, I love StarCraft. I don't just play the game, it's a big part of my life. I like watching streams and follow the big tournaments. I also do some casting now and then. Apart from that I like working out at the gym. But I've become a bit lazy about it lately. You only have that much time.

You've only been a high class player for a year or so, but you were already part of three different teams. Was it only bad luck ?

I wouldn't just call it bad luck, but rather shortage of knowledge. When I first joined eSahara I was new to esports in general and above all I was new to the professional scene. eSahara was not that bad of a choice, and when I joined eSahara I couldn't know about the merge with Absolute Legends. I don't think I need to comment on why I left that team. After I left them I was a bit skeptical about joining a new team. But I was contacted by Quantic and I think I made a good choice joining them. Even if it didn't last very long I'm really happy I got to be on that team.

This time you join Millenium Team, which is known for its stability. What made you choose us ?

After Quantic disbanded I was even more skeptical about joining a new team. I got a few offers but it wasn't until I was contacted by Millenium that I felt like I really wanted to join a team. After looking into the organization around Millenium and talking to players on the team, my choice was obvious. I'd like to avoid switching teams in the future and I am very happy to join such a stable and professional team as Millenium.

What about your goals for this new year. What do you want to achieve and what do you want to improve ?

My goal is always to improve. I need to work a lot on my mechanics and I have a few ideas that will help me there. My goal is also to beat some good players at an offline event.

You probably heard about the Millenium Gaming House, will you come to France to visit us ?

Yes, of course I know about it. I plan to visit the Gaming House in a few months and I'm looking forward to it.

Are you already training for HotS and what are your feelings about this new version of Starcraft ?

I can't say I've played a lot of HotS yet but I will switch over in a month or so. I did however watch some streams and I have a good idea of what's coming. There are some things that I don't like and some that I like. I feel that a few things are made easier for no good reason, like bases showing the number of workers harvesting for example. I do like the new units and the fact that there are so many possibilities in each match up. WoL is lacking that right now if you ask me. For example, spine – infestor – broodlord seems to be the only safe way to play vs Protoss but I don't find camping a lot of fun. So what I hope for in HotS is many possibilities.

What do you want to say to your new fans, and to all the Millenium community ?

First I'd like to thank Millenium for giving me this opportunity. To all the people cheering for me, I want you to know that it means a lot. Big thanks to all of you. I will work hard and do my best to become as good as possible, hopefully you will see more of me in the year of 2013. <3

Interview of Millienum's Manager Llewellys (thanks Boucot for translation)

The StarCraft 2 roster welcomes a new recruit, only two months after the arrival of Goswser. Is the arrival of MaddeLisk a strategical choice or just a good opportunity ?

Not so long ago, Quantic closed its doors, leaving MaddeLisk teamless. Looking for a stable team, this was an opportunity for Millenium to include in its roster the best female european player of SC2. Actually I'd say it's a good opportunity. However, this recruitment will probably influence some of the future strategical choices.

What's the goal of the arrival of MaddeLisk and how will we see her throughout the year ?

The main reason is that I have the feeling that MaddeLisk wasn't enough highlighted although she's the best female european player and it's possible, with an efficient collaboration, to forge her image on a media and market level.

Like most of the players, she'll intervene through 3 ways :

- She'll regularly participate to online tournaments (ZOTAC, showmatches...) under Millenium's tag.
- She'll present a weekly show on Millenium TV with Nazca (Millenium writer TN) who you discovered at Numericable M-House Cup.
- She'll participate to a few offline events, the number is mainly due to her level of play at the moment.

Some people will make the link with Dragon as a TV-oriented recruitment rather than a pick based only on the performance. Is it the case ?

Dragon was never recruited for the TV, he didn't even participate directly to it. But I understand that it can be considered as a mediatic choice.

Dragon was motivated to play in Europe, he had a really good micro and a great room for improvement. My goal was to give him a chance to show that he could be in the top 5 european terran players, which wasn't really far than he was, and to show to other koreans with higher skill that it was possible for Millenium to recruit and welcome them to the Gaming House while providing transportation to many events.

That's why ForGG joined the team a few time after.

But we are going far from the topic. Regarding MaddeLisk, there is obviously a mediatic reason to her arrival and I think she can bring a lot to Millenium and that Millenium can bring her a lot, which is a good basis for an interesting collaboration.

Furthermore, as the best female european player, I consider her as high-skilled, even it's not on the traditional scale. So I'd say her recruitment answers to both problems.

While DIMAGA is still teamless and most of the Millenium community was expecting his coming, it's eventually MaddeLisk who arrives. Should the fans be disappointed or shouldn't them expecting that Millenium recruits all the free players ?

DIMAGA is one of the most stable players in the european scene since the beginning of StarCraft 2. His salary requirements are related, which is legitimate.

It's not a scoop that Millenium decided to invest a lot on a competitive roster for LoL with the goal to qualify to Season 3, making a high-budget recruitment on SC2 difficult. Some may scream to death, but what makes Millenium the first French team is precisely lucidity on a sector that works sometimes on the head.

Sunday, the season 3 dream of Millenium is gone and it's too early to make conclusions. A meeting will be held shortly to ask tags esport Millenium activity for 2013 and thus determine the operating budget of the SC2 section.

Women's esport has trouble to break through and the only game that has an active scene is Counter Strike. Do you think that one day female esport on SC2, and in general, may be democratized ?

I don't think it's possible for female esport to be democratized on SC2 because there are not enough womens playing SC2. However, there is an important margin between its current state and what it could be.

Then, with the arrival of MaddeLisk, it's probable that Millenium will participate more actively to evolve this scene.

Out of SC2, I believe it's obviously possible to promote female esport on an esport game with many female players, now I don't think it exists today, so we'll see the reception of the female community for the next esport-stamped game.

Are you not scared about a possible lack of concentration from the players with the arrival of a girl ?

Since the lucky kiss case, I have the feeling that it improves the concentration (although the effect only lasts 2 games alas), anyway I know a Zerg who seems to have had a very beneficial effect, so I'm not too worried !

I wouldn't count on it. Maddelisk has been around for quite awhile without her skill rocketing above 'high master' and atleast from my own experience she tends to avoid "true" macro games, instead playing more gimmicky baneling bust and overlord drop styles (only 3-4 ladder games, so could also just be me randomly running into those builds!).

Anyhow, best of luck to both Maddelisk and Millenium, both seem to be highly dedicated towards SC2 and that counts for a lot .

I don't understand responses like this. How can people not understand why she was chosen over Dimaga? There are plenty of reasons why which are pretty easy to understand. Whenever a popular team announces they are signing someone the community lists off the 2-3 most expensive players on the market and then when they aren't signed doesn't understand how this is.

It's also not the Same Salary. Llewellys (Manager) said in the interview that DIMAGA (who is one of the most successfull player in EU) is not cheap. The Bugdet of Millenium (for SC2) is not so high because Millenium decided to invest in League of Legends. With the last Results which seems not so good (Talking about the team LoL) , they'll decide the budget in the different sections of Millenium. So It's still possible that Millenium recruit a known player.

An interesting choice. Why pick up a player of this caliber, when there are other cheaper better options on the market. Unless they see some hidden potential that I don't, or unless she'll be used more in a media/content producing role instead of a serious pro gaming role, then this seems like a bad move for the team and hardly announcement worthy.

Notice how I avoid any reference to the fact that she's a woman. I'm judging her as a player and a player only. I'm not sexist in any way, and I think it's sad that I feel like have to mention this to avoid any potential sexist claims.

Here's an attempted translation of Llewellys' interview on Millenium website. If there are translation or english mistakes, please correct me :

I say this not because i don't understand, but because Mill. Manager has shown interest in Dimaga for a long time now(1-2 years iirc). Since Dimaga is a free agent it seemed more likely to happen with the recent hints of Millenium picking up another player. So yeah, that's why I say its interesting. I'm not sure how some people could not understand why others might have expected them to pick up Dimaga with this information being out there :D

You do understand Dimaga cost's 1500€/month?

No I don't keep up with with player salaries or team's spending capacities. I just know that Mill has been interested in him for awhile so it i figured they would pick him up since he is a free agent.

Of course they are interested ... but there is a difference between some interest and action. They don't have the budget for him because of League of Legends. But Team Millenium LoL showed some poor results lately, and it's possible that some money that went to this section, finally go to SC2's section. And I'm not sur if Llewellys would take a big name. Actually he's known for his great pick-up such as Goswser (showed great results since his arrival in Millenium like 3 - 0 against Mvp), ForGG of course, he wasn't the best Korean out there (Was also SuperNova), but also showed excellent results. And you have to understand that a Major factor for Llewellys is the Gaming house. He wants that players come to the Gaming House. Apparently, SuperNova didn't wanted to come like 70/80% of Korean Players. They just want to practice on Korean Ladder and stay home or play in a Korean Gaming House.

So yeah, she's pretty tough, alright. Definitely best female in Europe, but she could break further. She's one of the few female competitors who can be expected to bring results in non-female tournaments. So congrats to MaddeLisk and to Millenium!

I don't see how you cannot understand responses like that. A large number of the community is looking at skill of the player rather than cost. And when you compare her and Dimaga it is incredibly clear who is the more skilled player. There are two sides of the coin.

How is that equal to them choosing her over Dimaga? Just because there are other players out there doesn't mean they made any such choice.

Interesting to see some of the responses. Yes, this is obviously a pr/marketing move as competitive female SC is still by far a joke compared to normal, non discriminatory tournaments. But at the same time, the people hating on Mill for this pickup should hate on EG for keeping players that haven't performed at all, simply for marketing reasons.

Exposure comes ahead of tourney results in the eyes of the sponsors, so in that sense, Mill's move makes a lot of sense.

Sure she might be awful on a competitive scale, but this isnt a results oriented pickup. The top eSports organizations are as much marketing firms as they are competitive gaming teams.

gl to her, I'm sure the attention she gets doing media/pr for Mill will open up some more doors for her in esports. If not, well it seems like her PhD in math should get her by

All that whine about the pick of Maddelisk, and not Dimaga is strange. Dimaga is one of the most stable and consistant player of SC2. He clearly asked for a good salary. Mil invested a lot in their LoL team recenly so they just can't afford a big player like Dimaga. Maddelisk is of course cheaper and open a lot of mediatic possibilities ... and she is way better than "a low master" !

Cool news, wonder how good she is, I've never seen her play in any of the tournaments before. Did she have a breakout performance recently I missed, for Mill to pick her up? Should be nice having more women besides scarlett competing!

You do know that there are people that think like that? And I am being completely serious. I am not trying to say that picking her up is bad or anything, I am just giving him the reason that people give that response. "Well, X player is better than Y so why didn't they grab them instead?"

I know its called marketing, but when I see someone like maximusblack getting picked up by quantic, i say that he deserves this becuase he brings a lot of content for the community, but maddelisk "just" plays the game
