IPL just posted on their Facebook page that Mvp will no longer be attending IPL5 or the GSL World Championships, due to his wrist injury. Full statement below:
Attention StarCraft fans: Due to wrist injuries, LG- Incredible Miracle Hyeon, Jeong-Jong (IMMvp) will be unable to compete at #IPL5 in both the IPL5 and GSLWC tournaments. Based on GSL point rankings, Startale ST-Squirtle HyunWoo Park will be replacing him. Please wish them both the best!
It's really terrible that Mvp's wrists are affecting him enough to cause him to drop out of tournaments. Hopefully he gets treatment soon - I'm sure all of us want to see the King of Terran performing at his best.
Send him some love in his fanclub here, and feel free to cheer on his replacement, Squirtle, here.
I remember in one of his interview and said that if he ever took time off to get his wrist fixed, he might retire afterward. Now I honestly hope this won't happen because he is one of the few terran players that I enjoy watching
take care and come back in an even more beasty form IMMVP!
Oh no! I wonder how much longer he's willing to stick around in the pro-scene before officially retiring. Hopefully he doesn't hurt himself passed the point of repair after he moves on from his pro-gaming career.
Once he can get his wrists treated he should come back better than he has been this whole year. And that's saying something, considering he's in the running for player of the year with his GSL runs and an IEM victory.
This is rough, but good news imho. I've been pretty worried about his condition and hoping he would take a bit of a break from all the competition to give himself a chance to heal. It's 100x worse later on if he toughs through it without regard to longterm consequences, and I'd hate to see him drop out of competition permanently because of injury.
Replacing a player that loses to a foreigner in a team league with a player that just loses to foreigners much worse than him, alright.
Squirtle is getting back on track though so this is great news (for him that is, obviously not for MVP). I think he is back to practicing again and hopefully spending a little less time with his girlfriend.
I really hope he takes a long break till HotS and gets healthy again. He should not risk his his future (not only SC) for temporary fame. Get well soon.
Can't they let Squirtle play in IPL5 as a representative, but replace him in the actual show match with MKP, Polt, or Taeja who will be there? The World team might not even have a Terran if Lucifron doesn't qualify.
Dang no Terrans on the korean team now and I think only Lucifron on the foreign team. This also dramatically decreases the chances of a Terran winning IPL5. Taeja hasn't been performing up to his normal standard and him and MVP are like the only terrans that have won/done well in anything major since the queen patch.
Very disappointing to hear but at the same time it's understandable. It will be good for Mvp to take this time to rest his wrists and hopefully he can try and get something done about it. We will always still love you Mvp <3!
Congrats to Squirtle for making the GSL WC team and going to IPL

Lucifron beat Grubby 3-1 to qualify. IGN broadcasted it about an hour or two ago

Yeah, it's going to be really hard especially with Leenock announced as a replacement earlier today pretty much completing the zerg dream team in the IPL 5 bracket
He'll probably go for a Nestea Award then take a break, I hope. I really frickin hope he takes a break. He should know all his fans are more concerned about his health and wellbeing than getting to see him play and win. All his fans just want him to get better

Korea still needs a Terran on the roster. Especially since it's a show match, both teams should at least have one player from every single race to have the most fun. We don't want to see just a bunch of PvP, ZvZ, ZvP and then the one game Lucifron plays.

I agree. Especially if they can pick a terran that will do some crazy shit and make it fun like the ones you mentioned. The thing I remember the most from the first GSL WC team match was San vs SEn carriers on metal

While this is true (and I wish they'd pick a Terran too), it would be cruel for them to overlook Squirtle just because he is protoss
Yeah, that's also a problem. You can't say you're going to pick the team one way and then make a change because you don't like the result. Next thing you know Seed will be kicked off the team for being Code B

True, I guess, but he still gets to participate in the tournament itself due to points, but MKP or another Terran picked by Mvp replaces him in the fun show match.
Damn it Taeja why couldn't you have 13 more GSL points? The difference between his points and Squirtle's is unbelievably small.
I like to think that Mvp was feeling sorry for Squirtle for putting him into the kong line, so he forfeited to give him a spot in the tournament and some air time in the show match. Good guy Mvp always looking out for his fellow pro gamers.
Mvp I really wanted to see him play some more, but I know that this is the correct decision for him and his wrists. It's unfortunate, but it just means that Mvp will have more time to rest and more time to crush through Code A.
With the state of his wrists causing him to drop out of tournaments, it's a wonder that he managed to reach the finals last season, going 3-4 against perhaps the strongest ZvT player in the world at that time.

Mvp doesn't feel pitty!!
Overall I wish IPL never even did this show match, they have so many awesome story lines/content to fill the weekend, all I can see this being is a lot of cheese as players don't want to show strats for the actual tournament.

OR they could change the qualifications to Top (CODE S) Players according to GSL points and kick Seed off the team, lol
Good choice by Mvp. He should really just concentrate on treatment for his wrists/neck now and rest up and come back for HotS. Now is a really good time to take a long break since we're close to the end of the season and HotS is just around the corner. If Flash can come back from his surgery, so can Mvp.
Hopefully he really takes a break. I think Flash said an interview that his wrist were hurting so he played 50 games of sc2 a day versus playing bw. MVP seems like he would do something similar.
His majesty needs to get some surgery and take a break. Flash did it, and he's doing fine now. I know he's afraid to take a break, but I'm sure he could come back full force after he recovers.
This sucks. It's always fun to watch Mvp play and see what type of build orders/cheeses he will pull off. Hopefully his wrists heal up and he makes a full recovery. Squirtle will be a good replacement player to watch.
1) Mvp and Flash have different conditions Flash had simple wrist problems which can be fixed with surgery + rehabilitation. Mvp has a problem with his cervical disks not being in the correct alignment, which causes his wrists to hurt and feel numb after long periods of playing.
2) Mvp's condition is not as easy to heal! Surgery to treat Mvp's condition is complicated, requires long rehabilitation, does not guarantee complete recovery, may make it worse, etc. It isn't something simple!
I love MVP but i must say it couldn't have been a better replacement. I think Squirtle would do much better in a team league, plus hes going to IPL now, and hes such an awesome player. SO excited ^^
Poor MVP though, i don't mean play down his injuries, cause it really is a shame. I hope he can stay in shape and keep up
Good time to rest as any, if they were bad enough to not be able to last out the year, then if he decides to continue playing, he'll be back in form by HotS release I hope.
On November 20 2012 13:43 FrostedMiniWheats wrote: D: omg no! He cancelled at IPL4 for the same reason. Hope his injury isn't so bad that he falls out of code A too ;;
He's 1 season away from the Nestea award.
he cant fall out of code A this round, maybe if he loses and then not winning the U&D and then losing his first match again at code A:o
No MvP D; He should rest and get treated now so that he can play HOTS when it is release. That way he can still catch up to other players since the gameplay is still being explore.
It would be terrible if he never wins that G5L trophy. GOM didn't just engrave his name on it already but they went the extra mile and embedded his face onto it.
He has been complaining about that wrists for a while (and also some neck problems) and I was hoping him for take a break, get treatment, get well and comeback healthy and kill nerds again.
I was afraid he would just continue playing as long as he could and then just retire because of his wrists.

I am not sure if he will take a break. He probably wants to cut down on foreign events due to travel and having to play the marathon style. Since Nestea and others have mentioned him helping with practice, it is likely he will continue to play Code A/Code S.

Also, Iron Squid is starting really soon. Doing something like that is probably much easier for him because he can play from Korea comfortably and It's not a marathon tournament.
I was saving my 2000th but can't think of a better thing than using it for the guy that made me love StarCraft II!
Take the time you need to heal that injury Mvp, your fans will always be cheering for you and will wait until you're back! "Winners gonna win" and you'll win even more with a proper condition.
i saw someone post the vid with the micro bot vs MVP in marine splitting, and MVP's control was insane, absolutely insane.... and it's a shame you dont see that anymore, simply because of his injury's. He's been competing and performing on courage and determination alone for probably a year now, i hope he can recover, but i'm doubtful
I hope he uses this time to get the help he needs for his wrists. These are the last real major tournaments for the year I believe, and he's not in any other. I'd much rather see MVP return uninjured than to have him drag him self on with his injury.

It really feels like Mvp should take care of himself.. ;; I hope he gets better and doesn't hurt himself so bad it can't be fixed... And if he drops out to Code B due to forfeits, try to imagine the faces of people in the Code A qualifier knowing that they might face Mvp in the first round.. :D
On November 20 2012 17:59 Ero-Sennin wrote: Does anyone know the specifics of his injury?
The most specific info anyone has is that his cervical disks (dunno which or how many) are misaligned due to a combination of preexisting condition and his posture while playing. Similar to a herniated disc on your back. The neck needs to be curved forward but his is curved backwards, or something like that. Pinches his nerves, which makes his wrists and hands numb while playing.
he sacrificed his health to practise like no tomorrow in order to stay at the top... if anyone wonder how did MVP stay top while alot of other terrans had falled... this serious injury is your answer...
The Champion of WoL.. I hope we'll get to see more of him in HotS, would be wiser for him to get better and prepare for HotS instead. Just rest and not attend so many tournaments that can wear him down.
Hopefully MVP actually goes to the doc instead of just skipping this tourny to lessen the burden. Much rather he fixes his wrists. It's too bad they didnt replace him with another terran. I'm feelin more immortal/sent vs Z games >.>
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Always the best that have to suffer

The thing is, that Mvps condition is waaay worse. Afaik just getting surgery and recovering from it would already take really long time(half a year or something like that) and it may not even fix the issue fully. If he would take a break, it would probably be almost a year before we would see him back in shape... I'm pretty sure if he doesn't manage to get back to Code S this season, he will retire/take a break. It would probably break my heart and make Starcraft incredibly less interesting for me, but it's the right choice for him.
I wonder if he will do the surgery now, seems like the best time if he at all thinks about doing it and coming back afterwards considering he is taking a break either way and with HotS coming in March.
OH..... my MVP, so disheartening to see him not play as well as he used to, and now he cannot even play in IPL5. Hope he can make a full return in the foreseeable future.
but i cant blame him, if the wrist affects him that much, he wouldnt win it anyway. the issue with his injury, as far as i understood it, is that its caused by the spine/shoulder region and that rehab would take much longer than flash's. so basically, if he chooses to undergo surgery, he would be out of business for a year or so. given his age and the military service that might still be looming, chances are indeed high that he would retire afterwards.
the whole issue cant really be compared to flash's situation who was still very young and was back in rape mode once the new season kicked off.
Although I am quite sad that we won't see him for a long long time, I am incredibly happy that he would treat himself and heal his wrists so when the king returns he will smash everybody once again.

You act like he's not going to play at all anymore ;o he just doesn't want to travel and play in a foreign tournament.
He's still going to play in Code A, Iron Squid and Blizzard Cup if that happens, for the rest of this year.
YESSSSS!!!!! Now he can finally get his wrists fixed! As nice as it is seeing MVP the Sorcerer conjure up wins out of nowhere, I want MVP the God back. You know, the one that can't be beaten no matter what.

Wow this sounds worse than ever and is probably the reason he fell out of Code S. Hopefully he'll be able to atleast practice a bit before his Code A matches.
I hope he is not going to fall out off GSL because of all those injury's because I don't feel good about an injured Mvp trying to get back into GSL the hard way.
He probably wants to qualify for code S next season so he gets the Nestea award and then he will most likely get treatment...actually if he forfeits gsl for treatment I really doubt gom won't give him a seed as soon as he's back from surgery...
I hope people around Mvp would realize that a simple wrist inflammation could be much worse if not treated properly, which seems to be the case here. Hopefully he undergoes MRI and goes through a physiotherapy process to rehab the injury in due time (and please don't rush back to action).
Yes!!! We get to see a far more interesting and fun to watch player in Squirtle! I know it sucks for MVP, and I wish him a speedy recovery, but it is nice to see some other very talented players get a shot at these events.

I hope he gets treatment and it actually helps with his condition. I want the healthy dominant MVP back, not the injured one who only won one GSL and was runner up in another one. MVP for 5 championships next year, gogo
that's tough to hear, but i hope he'll finally really take care of his wrists. the longer he keeps playing like that the worse it's going to get. plus with HotS coming up it's probably a good idea to rest now.
He has to let that wrist rest sometime. If he keeps at it things will just get worse. It sucks that he misses those two tournaments but in the longrun it is probably for the best.

Terran's not on the decline, zerg is just broken.
Protoss has won a ton of stuff recently/since the queen patch. MVP and Taeja are literally the only terrans that have won or even done well in anything major since the queen patch. Protoss is fine they just complain louder. Terran since the queen patch has done by far the worst of the 3 races.
THANK GOODNESS! MVP please take care of your wrists! Come back and wreck after that, I really can't believe how long you've been going on with wrist pain :'(
I think if MVP wins one more GSL he should stop playing and get the treatment after since HOTS is on the way shortly. That or stop right now and get treatment for his condition.

Do you? If Mvp does dominate for a whole year in HOTS, I am sure he would be made first sc2 bonjwa.
Do you think that bonjwa is some random word that Koreans made up just for BW? It actually derives from the Chinese word "本座" which literally means "To be seated at the highest place".

A lot of people were already gonna call him that in Korea had he won the finals vs Life.
Well whatever bonjwa means in people's heads, Mvp is only terran that won GSL in 2012 (one terran among protoss) and come very close to winning it 2nd time vs Life. People called Taeja best terran in the world at that time, and he got destroyed by Life. Mvp succeeds where every other terran fails. And he did all that while suffering from the condition that makes his fingers numb.
What does Mvp have to do to get credit he deserves? Walk on water?

MVP stated long ago that the tvz match up is very hard for terran and i remember him saying just before a set at the gom studio that he won't win because it's a zerg (i think he won tho). He played all those games nonetheless and still won GSLs. MVP is in pain and all you get to think about is how to QQ some more using him as a media. You won't get past MVP's fans i tell you.
Prompt recovery to you MVP, hope he will take it slow and be in good shape when he returns to keep the kids away from his G5L trophy
If MVP had won the MMA and Life finals, he would most certainly be a bonjwa. As it stands, I would say he's on the verge...but the WoL era is coming to an end.

And he did all that while suffering from the condition that makes his fingers numb.
What does Mvp have to do to get credit he deserves? Walk on water?
The difference between a Bonjwa and someone who just wins a lot of tournaments is the way they do it. When any of the past bonjwas entered a tournament, they were the favorite by a longshot. There was no other contender, and anyone else winning was a huge upset. There is a reason SaviOr losing to Bisu is so legendary: because at the time SaviOr was unbeatable. It's the same for all the other bonjwas, they were the extreme favorite in any tournament they entered. It's also the reason Flash wasn't called a bonjwa for so long, because Jaedong was always there to threaten him.
It's never been like that for MVP. It's always been: Yeah he might be one of the ones to take it, but this other guy is pretty good too.
MVP would never be considered a bonjwa for the same reasons Jaedong would never be considered a bonjwa. Yet, guess what nickname he earned rather fast? The Legend Killer.
A legend surely but you guys need to learn what true domination is. Unfortunately (if you can even call it that) there are a number of players who can win a tournament on any given Sunday. Furthermore, there are too many tournaments. In order to qualify for such a title you would have to win every tournament you show up to for a calendar year.
You have no equal; you have no rival.
It's not a flash of brilliance.
It's more like, "Shit man. Why do we even bother showing up? We know he's going to win already."
I see nothing wrong if he ends his career as a Legend. You don't need bonjwa status to go down in history.
MVP is a World Class player. Screw Codes and Top Players. Say hello to the World Class.
He is the only player I would ever consider naming "The best SC2 player" or at least the most successful in SC2 history!! He's consistency - Despite an injury!!!!!!!! - is yet unmatched by anyone!
Much <3 to MVP! Hoping to see him back in full force someday!

There is a special place in hell for people who takes a situation like this and makes up stuff on behalf of a player to complain about the game with their own interest being their main concern =p

Yes I guess so, but Sc2 is a different game (although similar) so I don't think we will have such players, maybe a couple of years after last part of Sc2 comes out and everything gets figured out/blizzard stops affecting the game with balance changes, but even then I am not so sure there will ever be a bonjwa by the definition you provided. Even though Koreans are stronger you can't even say "X Korean will take this foreign tournament 100%"
Here's the difference with Bonjwas and SC2. There are just way way more tournaments these days, so you see players play a lot more often. I would be very surprised if the players who were called bonjwas in bw would win as consistently if there were as many tournaments then, including foreign ones, that there are today.
