In the IeSF 2012 finals, you grabbed the championship with a score of 3-0. Tell us how you feel.
I am so happy because I was able to grab the championship as a representative of Korea. If I get the opportunity, I want to attend next year as well.
Today's match was only the finals. How did you feel?
I arrived yesterday and unfortunately heard that two players weren't able to make it. I wanted to play against a lot of people but I wasn't able to so it was disappointing. It was an easy victory for you.
Honestly, my opponent was pretty bad. But I was plenty surprised by the fact that South Africa also had a female SC2 division going on. I hope more and more female players start playing so that we can get a lot of tournaments going on in the future. Recently, you've been appearing alongside the StarTale team for GSTL. You must have a desire to be sent out.
Of course I want to play a game. But I don't think my skills are at a level for GSTL yet. I am going to work hard and keep increasing my skills so that I can one day participate in the GSTL. What are your future plans?
I heard that there will be a ZOWIE Divina Season 2 opening up soon. Since I was the champion for season one, I have been waiting for this. I want to win this one as well.

First off, please introduce yourself.
I am the 2012 IeSF representative for South Africa, Gabriella Issacs. I was born in 1998, so I am 15 years old.
You lost really easily in the finals. It looked like you hadn't played SC2 for a long time.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything for this tournament. I had only started playing SC2 for five months. My finals opponent, Aphrodite, was so good. She faced me with a purely marine/marauder composition and her micro was off the charts. Did you play any other game before SC2?
I used to play WC3 but nowadays I play Counter Strike. My WC3 skills are good enough to be acknowledged by people around me. I just started SC2 so it's still difficult for me. It's also going to take a while before I can adapt to the game (laughs). How is the eSports scene in South Africa?
We have people who like to play and we even have people who aspire to be pro gamers. But we don't have many tournaments available so we have constraints on interests for the game. Personally, I hope our country gets to host many eSports related events so that we can become a big eSports scene. What game is popular over there?
DotA 1 and Call of Duty seems to be the most popular. Do you think you'll participate in future tournaments?
I'm still young so I think I'll focus on education for now. But if I do get the chances for it, I want to attend a lot of tournaments.

She looks like the female version of another progamer, but I just can't put my finger on who.

I'm sure ST was planning on sending her out against Prime, but with Parting's ALL KILL and whatnot...

I didn't know she had even competed in "real" competition. Has she beaten anyone notable in those? A good female would probably help the StarCraft 2 scene quite a bit.

IeSF2012 World Championship finalist Gabriella Isaacs put a little smile on her face after being defeated by Aphrodite in the SC2 Female Division Finals. With her face really close to the monitor as she was making units, it seems like she was still getting used to StarCraft 2.
First, please introduce yourself
My name is Gabriella Isaacs, and I represented South Africa for this year's IeSF. I'm 15 years old.
You were crushed by your opponent today. It seems like you just started playing StarCraft 2 I didn't expect much for this tournament. I only started SC2 5 months ago. Aphrodite plays really well. Her marine and marauder micro seemed much different..
Did you enjoy any games before SC2? I did play WarCraft 3 and now I'm enjoying Counter Strike because I like it. I was pretty good in WC3; people around me said I was good at the game. I just started playing SC2, so its hard for me and will take some time to get used to (smiles).
How's the e-Sports scene in South Africa?
There are people who enjoy playing games, and few of them want to become progamers. However, since there aren't many tournaments, its hard to attract interest for e-Sports. Personally, I hope that South Africans will hold more tournaments, so that South African e-Sports infrastructure can grow.
Which games are popular?
Mostly team-based games such as Dota 1 and Call of Duty.
Are you willing to participate in more tournaments in the future?
I would if I have the chance to; however, since I'm still young, I will focus on education first.
Haven't translated a text interview in a long time >_<

Are there VODs somewhere? This sounds like a funny match, Aphrodite is Korean GM (I think? She was NA GM at least), and it sounds like the South African player is likely less than masters NA.

Everybody here seems to say Aphrodite is the best female player, but I think Scarlett made it clear that she's well above any other female level right now (Except for -maybe- Luway), no?
By the way, this is very exciting to see South Africa getting involved in the Starcraft scene, the more people get into the game, the better! :D

VeraLynn best female progamer ever.
+ Show Spoiler +lol jk. Scarlett is probably the best female player, but her situation kinda makes it special. I don't mean to offend her at all, I'm a big fan of her. Aphrodite is called the best female progamer because well, she's on Startale, wins ladies tournaments, and she does appear to be more "genuinely attractive looking". But overall Scarlett is better I think. Didn't Scarlett beat Aphrodite in some ladies tournament?

At least, I think that's the correct terminology - pretty sure a transwoman is not female. Maybe I'm wrong though.
|
I think we were going with "native female" when talking about the best female player. Or at least new ones.
And yeah she kinda does look like she could be Nada's sister.
It's a shame they caught Gabriella having a bit of a bout with a lazy eye.

Aphrodite is sooo cute!
Lol and congrats to her for winning! Hope to see her play in team leagues one day.

Lol I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off that way. I was just actually, genuinely surprised.

Wow did not expect a South African jersey in the photos. South Africa Fighting!!
Although I feel she is selling SA a bit short in terms of the SC2 scene - we do actually have a few decent players here (and one Grand Master) and we do have quite a couple of decent sized tournaments here :D
|
Not sure if this whole IeSF was worth mentionning since there were only 2 players ? Seriously make her play against boys or whatever because this whole tournament was just a joke :/
No offense to the girls, Aphrodite is clearly better than your average high master boys and i'm pretty sure it'd have been a lot more fun :/

She's only played a couple times in open tournaments (qualifiers), and IIRC the only broadcasted game she's had was losing to Stork in the WCS qualifiers. That's why few people actually know if she's any good or not. I have noticed a couple Startale players mention her lately in interviews as a practice partner or source of builds...
|
so what's the deal with this tournament? Like I want to know the details of it: when, how, why, where, etc.
|
Could someone link me to the VODs if possible please? Oh and Aphrodite has always been good. She either won or came 2nd in the last Iron Lady Tourny and consistently places 1-2nd in many Women Tournys.
|
aphrodite is easily the best female terran now. Would love to see a showmatch between her and scarlett for the best female player although i am not to sure if she had a chance against scarlett.
|
Aphrodite is the only girl gamer i support, because she's trying to be legit good.
Of course it's nice the girl from SA also tried to do her best. Although she doesn't seem very serious about SC2. ^^
|
Wow nice 15 years old and already playing a tournament in Korea anyone knows her rank? :o

I demand Flo vs Aphrodite rematch.
.. Regardless, grats Aphro.

This is a big step forward for South Africa, as eSports funding is very limited in the country. With more African participants(3 more countries I believe) we might see eSports added to the All Africa Games, which forces our government to take it more seriously.
Congratulations to Gabriela and PandaTank for their performances, now to see what the Tekken team can do!

Aphrodite seems to be far and away the best female sc2 player, but I don't think she's near code A level, I believe she is at a barely high masters level in KR , which is still pretty amazing(not sure about this though, it's been a long time since I last watched her).
|
For those wondering, this is the bnet profile of the South African girl. Bronze 2v2, unranked 1v1. If you look at her match history you'll see she's been playing practice league. Complete joke tournament lol.
For the record, she was 1 of 2 female players in SA that entered for this. I don't know why they bother. ~_~

She is Rank 15 GM on NA, if it means anything.

We bother because there is a bigger picture. Sure, only 2 ladies entered the qualifier this year, but this opens doors for the years to come and perhaps opens eSports to the masses here. This is going to generate a lot of exposure for our industry as this will make it into multiple leading publications(print and online) and will hopefully help to bridge the gap that we currently have. Small steps forward to having eSports on the same stage as cricket, rugby and soccer in the future. It is an exciting prospect.

Sure, more publicity is good, but I feel to anyone who knows anything about SC2/eSports, this just makes the tournament look like a joke. And it'll be hard for any journalist writing about it to prevent the same effect from carrying over into their articles unless they really blur the details. It's not like they can turn it into some sort of heroic 'underdog story' when our player has barely touched the game. Well, I guess they could, but it would be kinda dishonest.
I'm normally 100% supportive of things like female tournaments but this is really an extreme case. If MSSA forked out for this, I think that money could have been much better spent.

I guess this is cool, but I have to wonder how accomplished they really feel when a lot of the better female players (Scarlett, Luway, Flo) didn't even show. :/

let's not talk about Scarlett in this topic because as good as she is, I dont think she should be able to compete in female only tournaments. That's basically like transgender male competing in female olympics.

Honest question: Is Scarlett even eligible for leagues like this? Not trying to start an argument or anything but it would seem a little weird to see Scarlett curb-stomping all the female only competitions.
|
The precedent set by other female-only tournaments (Iron Lady, Zowie Divina) is to allow Scarlett to participate, though I don't know what IeSF's stance was.

The reason there hasn't bees any transgender (male or female) that participated at the Olympics as their chosen gender is because none has ever qualified, not because they aren't allowed to compete.
(Full disclosure: to compete at the Olympics under your non-native gender you need to be post-op, have been on hormones for 2+ years and you need to be legally considered as being of your chosen gender).

Visa issues and a car crash prevented two players from coming to the event at all.

Which is allowed (like someone stated above) The difference between male and female for computer games is, if it matters at all, probably reduced to 'how do you feel about competitions and putting huge amounts of time and effort into sth." aka determination. This is greatly influenced by one's own character (which in turn is greatly influenced by hormone levels). So there is basically no difference between transwomen (which are female, except if women older than 50 are also not female because they are not fertile anymore) and 'natural' women. On a side note: The common belief is that women can do non-physical tasks as good as men, but when it comes to computer games everyone draws a line based on gender. Funfact: I've read somewhere a long time ago, that the wc2 Hessen (German Bundesland) Championship was won by a girl No guarantees on that information though
on topic: congratz to aphrodite, I'd like to see her stream, missed out on that sadly on the SA-girl: While it's nice to see the popularity of eSports rise, it is kinda sad that the scene has not yet evolved to the point where competitions like that are take seriously. But that will hopefully change in the future and I'm looking forward to it.
