NASL, EVO (Fighting games) IPL and IEM all hold big events in North America every year? And now we will be seeing Valve with the International as well....

Nice for MLG, but 4700000 unique viewer with only 430000 as peak sounds a bit weird to me.
How many people just flashed by for 5 minutes and quickly switched it of? :-/

edit: just saying that "unique viewers" is an incredibly bloated number, people should rather look at peak or average viewers.

I'd still like to know how they reached those numbers.

Thats great and all.....

I dont doubt that these are awesome numbers. But with every event seemingly breaking records all the time and all those different ways to measure stream numbers, I wish I could actually relate those numbers to something else to get a feeling of how big it was. Events being very fond of bunching numbers together from 52432 different streams of 343 different games doesnt help.

Heres to hoping we get a more easily readable and relatable way of measuring streaming numbers in the future.

I would say the unique doesnt seem bloated. Think of it this way, people have places to be and things to do. Given the different time zones that MLG spans as well, you would be hard pressed to find someone being able to sit down and watch the entire tournament. There is always places people have to be so those numbers do not seem too bloated to me.

Haha, yeah this is the first thing that came to my mind when I finished reading the OP. Its good to see that MLG is doing well. ~Million viewers is what an average TV show gets, so that shows that ESports is indeed becoming more mainstream. I realize that this number includes world wide figures and the TV shows I am referring to are in the US market, but its still a big step forward.
I will not be poisoned by your bitterness

Would be interesting to see numbers by game. LoL was probably ahead of SC2 Because of how their client works and it having an overall bigger playerbase sinceits free, but growth anywhere is awesome :D

Which is why the stream was flawless for me and, no doubt, many others in Europe. No offense to Twitch, their efforts are appreciated but their service in the EU is just not up to quality.

Agreed with that guy, don't think the numbers are bloated either. Number of unique viewers actually seems to me as the most relevant figure to see how well the even did. If you take things like average time per viewers, how bloated will it be from people leaving their stream open 24/7 even when they're not watching etc etc ...

Good job MLG on the viewership and the production but I hear you have a few things to work on as far as organization is concerned ...

Where is all this LoL stuff coming from? People were talking about the crowds during MLG. The SC2 community begrudged the LoL community for having what they perceived to be a louder crowd and the LoL community begrudged the SC2 community for having what they perceived to be a louder crowd. Now people in this community are talking about LoL having bigger stream view numbers than SC2 while the LoL community is talking about how they wished LoL had as big of a live crowd as SC2 does. I think both of our communities have low self esteem.

Congrats MLG on smashing records.

Probably because of LoL for the large increase.

Also, it's unnecessary and detrimental to "twist" facts into some ridiculous trivia. It's obvious you're trying to make the actual numbers "look" bigger than it really is. Most of us can see that. Don't play dumb.

"5.4 million hours of 4.7 million viewers = 616 years...of one person"

Another trivia: Despite having more than 36 hours of content, the average view time per viewer was just over 1 hour

"4.7 million is more than the population of select countries...that are small"

"437,000 online viewers = 8.5 Yankee stadiums...totally ignoring that we're comparing online viewers vs. actual spectators"

Another trivia: "20,000 spectators over 3 days = average of 13% of Yankee stadium per day for 3 days"

That said, congrats on having a record session from the previous.

Last event they released numbers was MLG Providence , it had 241000 peak concurrent viewers ( that one had LoL too )
241000 to 437000 is a pretty nice 81% increase.

Ooh, no jabs at Dreamhack this time :D MLG getting better with their PR.

Most of the viewers come from League of Legends, of course. But still it's great stuff for eSports in general.

Sadly, they are misleading comparisons like usually...

So are these real or bloated numbers? I ask because recently I learned that US events count it differently and add up numbers for every day so they end up with huge, fake total.

Are those 20k spectators unique or mostly counted 3x the same guys? Similarly, is the 4.7M total unique over all three days or just added from separate day counts?

"5.4 million hours of 4.7 million viewers = 616 years...of one person"

Another trivia: Despite having more than 36 hours of content, the average view time per viewer was just over 1 hour

"4.7 million is more than the population of select countries...that are small"

"437,000 online viewers = 8.5 Yankee stadiums...totally ignoring that we're comparing online viewers vs. actual spectators"

Another trivia: "20,000 spectators over 3 days = average of 13% of Yankee stadium per day for 3 days"

That said, congrats on having a record session from the previous.

It would be a bold-faced lie to say 4.7m "unique" viewers if they counted people more than once so I doubt that's the case.

Please lay off the pessimism and negativity, people. I know you get something out of it but maybe consider that these threads are read by a lot of people including public figures who will gauge the community's reactions based on your responses. There is absolutely nothing bad or negative to take out of these numbers. This announcement is 100% good. Maybe positive posts are boring to you but I think you can manage .

They don't count people that come in, they count the amount of passes sold, obviously.

How are facts being twisted? Everything that you said is something that immediately occurs to everyone reading this. You're explaining, not exposing. If the things you list are prima facie obvious (and, fret not, they are), what is deceptive about it? There's no deception, no more than TL Team News or EG Press releases. It's PR, and I'm confused as to how there's any dishonesty about it.

Honestly, I'm stunned that so much residual acrimony from the Winter Arena is still present today.

Gratz, i guess
MLG always felt overrated but you get the best casters and the best players at the best hours... and at the end of the day i can't blame MLG for poor customer service or open bracket policy when it is the only one of the 2 tournaments i still glance my eyes upon every now and then.

Its good for eSports in general, although the LoL players seem to dislike sc2 quite a bit.

In the crowd some really fat guy was holding up a sign saying "Sc2 sucks".

Last event they released numbers was MLG Providence , it had 241000 peak concurrent viewers ( that one had LoL too )
241000 to 437000 is a pretty nice 81% increase.

This is what's important. They have an 81% increase in viewership over MLG Providence. They manipulate their numbers for sure, but they manipulated them at MLG Providence too, so a huge increase in viewers is amazing.

As long as MLG hides their numbers on the streams i dont really believe any of those numbers, especially as MLG only releases info when they say their have broken records etc.

Be 100% transparent or those numbers aren't worth anything.

Transparent? lol, that'll never happen. That's just bad business. Not to mention there may be legal issues depending on who tracks it/what their agreement is.

No they count everyone every time they go in atleast when they were discussing it on a rakaka show Sundance responded to it on twitter confirming it.

So if the event is three days and people come there each day same person they're counted 3 times.

Amazing numbers. Congrats MLG. Anaheim was definitely a sick event. As for viewership breakdown, Slasher said on Lo3 that we might get a game by game breakdown. I think sc2 did pretty well at this event. The hype really grabbed the communities attention and the tweets saying they shat on every record came when the kespa stuff was going on. Probably didn't beat LoL, but sc2 should have held its ground

all that matters (for people investing in esports anyway) is that the numbers are growing to previous events ^^

Indeed, would be nice to see a per game split as they had a lot going on.

How is transparency bad for business? Sure they can chose the numbers they release to the public, but at the end of the day their cash flows won't change.
