Go watch GSL then, having an open tournament gives up and comers a chance to prove themselves. Also the grand finals will most likely be stacked, this is just a qualifier with prizes basically.

Always enjoy DH thogh, on-site or stream!

EIZO Stockholm had over million unique viewer.

No, it had over one million unique VIEWS, not one million viewers.

Do you honestly think that there were over 1.000.000 different people tuning in to EIZO stockholm and that "millions of viewers around the globe." will tune in to watch DH Summer? I think not.

GSL is also an open tournament tho but just like Dreamhack it's really only the playoffs that are interesting.

My personal homepage has 1.000.000.000 uniwue viewers!

In grown-up life, things doesn't come true just becaus someone said so.

Please use reason, do you really think 1.000.000 [ONE MILLION] unique people tuned in to watch DH Stockholm? really? It really irks me when people put "statistiks" over reason. It is simply not true, can't you make that out yourself? How many active starcraft 2 players are there worldwide? maybe 2 million? (I think that is an exaggeration but lets say it is 2 mil) do you mean that half of them tuned in to watch DH STHLM? Even if people who dont play tuned in it wouldn't mkae much of a difference.

Even if i missquoted or their article said something else it doesnät change the fact that there is no chanse that DH sthlm had 1 million unique viewers.

Do you think it did? really?

The definition of "unique viewer" is the amount of unique IP-addresses connecting to the stream.
Think of it this way, if I have a dynamic IP-address and connect multiple times, I will count as a new unique viewer if my IP has changed. But this also applies in reverse to everyone connecting from the same network/NAT. If me and my brother connect to the stream from the same network, we will only count as 1 unique viewer.

There is no real way to distinguish the real numbers without forcing everyone to use a private account to watch the stream. As you said the real numbers are probably lower, but it's impossible to get exact figures, counting the unique viewers is the best way to get a decent estimate.

Also I think you underestimate how many people that actually don't play the game, but watch streams. I own SC2, but I don't play at all, although I enjoy watching pro's play in various tournaments. Just like I watch any other sport/activity without practicing it myself.

Hi.

This is exactly what I've bee ntalking about all the time.
Most internet users have dynamic IP-adresses and so on.
I also own SC2, and I dont either and I watch all major tournaments.

All these things don't mean anything.
You do not have to calculate or w/e, just use common sense.
The actual number isn't anywhere near 1 million and they expect DH summer to get "millions of viewers",

But w/e, I don't wanna beat on a dead horse anymore.

Are you suggesting Dreamhack blatantly lied about their viewer numbers? IPL and MLG have both reported similar numbers and considering Dreamhack got quite a bit of mainstream media attention here in Sweden I definitely think it's not only possible but even probable. Since they got ~30-40k average concurrent viewers and maybe 80% of those were dedicated fans, think about all the people who just tuned in for 20 minutes and then tuned out during the ~20 hours of broadcasting time throughout the weekend. Things add up

Some facts need to be straighten up here:

1. Unique viewers is a metric that is used for online streaming.
This metric is very much like "Unique visitors" for web analytics. This is not a perfect measurement because it's actually impossible to measure the exact amount of people visiting a site. Although this is the closest and best measurement in this industry and is thus a metric in the industry that different tools use (SiteCatalyst, Google Analytics etc.)

When DreamHack reports the way they do they are not trying to hide facts or doing something wrong, they just provide with the stats they get from their provider (TwitchTV) and it's a industry metric.

2. It's actually possible that Millions will watch DreamHack Summer
DreamHack Summer 2011 had over 3M Unique Viewers (Yes, the metric) with all of their streams combined.

With all the games including popular ones like the growing Dota2, StarCraft2 as well as League of Legends + broadcasting on Swedish Television (Not only web stream, ordinary TV broadcast as well) it's possible that they will get millions of people watching. A prime-time show broadcasted on SVT1 in Sweden will easily get 300 000 viewers. So even consider that there are problems with the measurement "Unique viewer" it's still possible that Millions of people will watch DreamHack Summer.

... And they'll definitely get Millions of "Unique Viewers" (The metric).

You are SERIOUSLY underestimating the amount of people who just watch tournaments, but rarely/never play SC2. I haven't played a single game of SC2 in the last 16 months or so, but I have watched every bigger tournament to date. And I know atleast 25-30 people who do the same. A million viewers is nothing.

I dont know, maybe a Swedish holiday or celebration day or what ever? I was wondering this myself why they are starting on a Saturday and not on Friday, which would make more sense to me cause the finals on Monday..... That will cost some viewers.

"In modern Sweden, Midsummer's Eve and Midsummer's Day (Midsommarafton and Midsommardagen) were formerly celebrated on 23 June and 24 June, but since 1953 the celebration has been moved to the Friday and Saturday between 19 June and 26 June. It is one of the most important holidays of the year in Sweden, and probably the most uniquely Swedish in the way it is celebrated. The main celebrations take place on the Friday, and the traditional events include raising and dancing around a huge maypole."
