It seems that more and more koreans are signed by foreign teams. If it continues like that we will have only foreign organisations left, with teams consisting of an average of 80+% koreans who will take all the prize pools in 2 years time. And that would definetely be the beginning of the end... I hope teams will continue (or start) to give foreign talents a chance to shine and grow, or it will hurt the scene a lot in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that foreign teams sign koreans, that is "globalisation" in e-sports. We just should be careful that this globalisation really stays global. And not a seperation like: managers in the west and players in the east... It's like outsourcing the production (playing) to asia by signing local contractors^^ You're onto it - this is an instance of out-sourcing. It's great for Western eSports teams, not so good for Eastern eSports teams, which are losing their best players to the money and opportunities offered by Western teams. Eastern teams then run the risk of becoming second-tier teams, a stepping stone for players aiming for Western teams. It's great for Eastern players, not so good for Western players, who are losing the money and support that was otherwise theirs, because of the improved money to skill ratio Eastern players offer. Western players then run the risk of becoming second-tier players, semi-pros and amateurs who aren't able to make ends meet playing SC 2. As far as the effect on the SC 2 scene goes, I think it puts a limit on the scene's potential expansion. SC 2 as an eSport is not going to grow much bigger than it is now in the West because of a lack of new players. It's going to be an old boy's club with a large barrier of entry and that grows stale overtime. A vibrant scene has new players pouring into it to spice up the competition each year, but I don't see this happening in the West for SC 2. In Korea, well - SC 2 is #18 on the list of games played in PC Bangs and that's not popular. But with Blizzard negotiating with KESPA and OGN getting involved, there's still potential. In the West, not so much. | ||
