There aren't enough viewers to make it profitable. 240 thousand isnt enough viewers? Shit, MLG can't even get people to pay to view their content. Do you think that really looks good for sponsors? Razer comes here and sees everyone whining about money or how they don't have money -- then probably thinks that even if people do see their ads, no ones going to buy shit. And, let's face it, if you've paid to watch the stream, you already know about whatever's going to be advertised most likely. THey aren't going to make enough new customers, really.
Dude, that's not the point. Razer probably won't think that way. They advertise to hardcore gamers cause that's their core consumer base. They want the biggest numbers to see those ads because it's not about selling shit now to new customers. It's about building up a brand, getting brand recognition and staying in people's heads. Everybody knows Coca Cola yet they still advertise everywhere all the time, don't they?
To the guys who mentioned HSC, to my knowledge Take runs that with some volunteer support but overall has to be profitable as he's personally responsible, most of the risk is on him and he didn't have big assets to bring in. I guess all events can and should learn from him.

I cant watch unlimited movies + series (ofc not every series or movie in the world, but a large database to chose from) + unlimited sport from Premier League, Champions League, PGA, NBL, Formel 1, MotoGP,NHL etc. (not every game but i can watch how much of what is broadcasted as i want) for about 25$ a month
I cant see why i should need to pay 20 $ for a weekend for only sc2

This is the problem with a community base which consists mostly of college age or younger individuals.

We need LoL numbers. Move over SC2, you're gonna be replaced as the main event in 2013. Losing players, losing viewers, Blizzard failed

The target audience would mostly be anywhere from in high school to graduate school. Not the type to have much cash nor the willingness to part with it, especially for a three day event. A GSL style year long subscription might be a better idea, 1 pass for say, all the MLGs in the year. I would assume if you're not making money, you want to cut costs. E sports has always been a sort of underground scene, I don't think anyone would mind if the venues were smaller, the accommodation/ travel a bit more modest amongst other things. Personally, I do not think e sports can be as big as it is in Korea (even here it seems to be regarded as an unfortunate addiction by a lot of people) anywhere else, and will remain a more or less niche thing, especially for games like Starcraft. Do not bring up brood war, it was not the face of esports anywhere outside Korea (This was probably counter strike). It is anybody's guess why it succeeded there as it did.

so PPV on my cable or my internet? How would i order it ? through my cable provider?

The only thing we know about this tournament is the 32 players that will be there, and the tourney will be held in New York. That's all we know. That, and that it will cost $20,00 to watch.
I think MLG is just approaching this the wrong way. Where is the hype? At least give us something to be excited about! The Plott brothers co-casting? XTreme up-side-down booths? Who knows.. All I know is that, right now, I have nothing to be excited about.

Because you need to support eSports for the greater Esports good so ESports doesn't die of ESPORTSuicide

HSC is very comparable to the winter arena, since the tournament set up (not necessarily the format itself) is similiar. I don't think they made money out of it. They had like 1k viewers on the premium stream. They had 3.2k on the premium stream at the points i was watching. Still not that many people. But good to see its more than I thought.
This also means that there were more people who paid for the premium, since probably not all of the people who paid the HD pass were watching during that 3,2k peak. With simple math, 3k premium viewers convert to 15k €, which is more than the prizepool of that given tournament. Not to say that they made 15k profit, but you probably get my point.

Do you have netflix in Sweden?

PPV is a very American concept, and the only real take-up to it, such as in the UK, is with movies and stuff on Sky, while the non-WWE stuff are shown on TV. So while this may do okay in the US, I don't see how this is going to be a better business model than free with ads for the rest of the world.

http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/legal/videopolicy.html
Limitation of Usage Neither you nor the operator of any website where your Production(s) may be viewed can force a viewer to pay a "fee" to be able to view your Production(s).
Regarding Websites and "Premium Access" We understand that many third party websites have a "free" method to see their video content, as well as a 'premium' membership service that allows for speedier viewing.
For clarity, please note that as long as the website that hosts your Production provides a free method to allow viewers to see the Production, Blizzard Entertainment will not object to your Production being hosted on that site, regardless of the site's "for pay" premium service plans.
so MLG pays Blizzard a fee so they can do this? Can someone explain please? ;/

I guess what bothers me about this the most is that I don't feel Sundance and his team even particularly care about SC2. They're doing this now because they realize it's bigger than Halo and for no other reason. If I'm going to be spending money I'd rather it go towards something like Homestory where the people running it are actually passionate about the game and not primarily trying to be a slick business with cheesy Dr Pepper gaming house ads and the like.

Considering the stacked lineup at assembly i dont mind missing this.

I sort of agree with this. I used to know probably 20 people who played Starcraft 2 regularly, now none of us play. LoL still has players, and DotA 2 is doing okay for still being in beta. I don't think the Starcraft 2 expansion will do well either, because nobody will want to pay $60 to play a game they got bored of a year ago.

For anyone on the fence, I highly encourage you to check out their demo of the site they'll be using. It has a really cool quad-stream format that you can configure in many different ways. It's even better than what they had for Providence.

Sounds like I might be in the minority, but I think this is a good move by MLG. $20 for flying in the best they could find, throwing them into a pit together, and delivering all of it with a slick stream interface seems like a deal to me.

And what is he going to do then, go back to COD as his main game? I guess LoL could become the #1 game, but LoL fans are going to be even less likely to pay given their game is F2P.
I just don't understand why they are spending so much money flying everyone out here for a tournament with no live audience. Makes absolutely ZERO sense to me. Basically lighting money on fire, and I won't be supporting it.

If that's what the television packages run in Sweden, Americans are getting shit on 24/7 by our providers.

WAAAAAAT NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Something to consider that GOM offers more content, and costs less.
Then it is necessary to consider if GOM is underpriced, or if MLG offers better quality content.
P.S.
For me, I'll be watching Liquid'HerO, happy to have an excuse to save $20. If he goes to the next MLG, I will have to consider the factors again.
