Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either. |

I think everything that you said is definitely a factor in this attitude of resistance. The majority of the audience is certainly at least aware of torrenting and the argument can definitely be made that said people feel entitled to free content. I simply intend not to watch it. Then again, I've never paid for a TV PPV sporting even. I don't pay for cable, and I just watch whatever is ad supported (like hulu, youtube, twitch.tv, etc). When there is nothing of interest on any of those, I read a book or play a game. My entertainment time is limited enough that it can be EASILY filled with things I don't have to pay extra for, so why would I?
I'm with you. There's so much content being offered right now that I find it hard to justify paying for more than one service (GSL). And I find it hard to believe anyone spends the entire weekend watching every game, making it even harder to get your money's worth.

Are these people really so dumb to not support this for a measly $20?????
Everyone knows starcraft is losing money atm. It is down to MLG and other leagues to find a way to monetize it otherwise the scene will quite simply collapse. Nobody is making money atm, and nobody can get big sponsors because there are no hard figures behind these kind of events. (Money talks, free stream viewers doesn't)
Now MLG take the initiative to try to prove esports can work as a viable bussiness, and all these turds on here say they wont pay....
Well enjoy killing your own hobby idiots. I can't beleive how moderate Sundance is being about this. He has put on so many high quality events, that none of you assholes have ever paid for, and this is the thanks he gets for trying to get $20 for 5 STREAMS and HOURS of content. He even suggests pulling together with friends, or going to barcrafts.
Jesus christ, starcraft doesn't deserve to succeed if its fanbase are so short minded as to not support this.
Seriously this is so sad it is beyond words. I bet you guys wouldnt blink an eyelid at spening $20 for a new mouse/keyboard/game or even freaking pizza, now when the time coomes to truly support esports, you all can't be asked to spend your doritoes money on a company that has given you so much already for free.
Think of any other sport, people pay the entry fee, they buy the merch, they spend money on food/drinks at the event.... and thats how the sport survives as a bussiness. You guys are so shortsighted its unbeleivable.

TLDR; If you can't find $20 to support this, then dont complain when starcraft collapses in the west. It'll be on your head. If this fails, then esports fails. MLG can't continue making money like they have before, and If a company like MLG cant make money, then who the hell can? There's a reason why I have always thought that only Koreans should play Starcraft. And don't BS about 'supporting ESports!' MLG is a business. It cares about ESports only as long as ESports gets it money.

Most people complain because they think 20 bucks is TOO MUCH, not because the event should be free. So please stop posting comments like "you spoiled brats are not willing to pay for events!"

Even GSL is cheaper and has waaay more content. You have to set your prices to match your market, which MLG isn't. Especially with another big event going on at the same time. This is borderline stupid to be honest. It does not matter that UFC or some other well established sport is 5 times more expensive, this is irrelevant for e-sports. The e-sports scene is not there yet and they will likely loose alot in ad revenue, much more than they will add with this new cash flow. You have to remember that GSL has no costs other than the production / stream. MLG is flying players (including a lot from Korea) to New York City and having them stay in hotels in Manhattan. That does not come cheap. Whether they will exploit the fact they have all the players in the same location or not remains to be seen, they will need to make it special enough so it doesn't look like it could have all been done from online / replays.
I am enjoying the team challenges done from replays right now. I don't understand why they feel the need to spend $100000 on travel and expense create a competition that is subpar compared to the GSL.

I just don't really understand how MLG viewership was up 225% in 2011, SC2 has brought way more eyes to MLG, and yet this is needed for esports to grow? How did MLG ever survive before SC2?
I think it's far more likely trying to cash in on the cyclical nature of the espors scene, they k now SC2 viewership won't last and want to milk it while they can

So where will we be able to find the restreams?

That's how I feel, I'll watch assembly for free that week and just wait for the free vods

If this is the best Esports can do, then it will have to fail. It's not like I buy SC2 streams out of some saintly desire. Either they can find a business model that works or they can't. In the end I hope it works, but I will only pay what the service is worth to me. It would be foolish to do otherwise.

No free stream at all.

I'm fine with the concept - it's extra, optional content, totally awesome - but I feel like the pricing doesn't fit with the current market trends. Charging more than a full GSL season pass for 3 days of content when there's another totally solid event going on at the same time seems like it could crash and burn.
Personally, I really don't think I'll drop the cash short of MLG taking production to a whole new level. No live atmosphere, no time to prepare for games, no warning that it's PPV... I just don't think it's being done the right way.
Then again, I'm also biased, since I can't watch HD anyway. If I could actually enjoy it in 1080p I'd probably be decently okay with it - it's just the relative price feels weird.

I might pay but honestly I don't have time to nearly follow even the biggest tournaments and there's plenty of free content when I do. With the Assembly going on at the same time I'll probably just tune into that and follow mlg with the brackets.

So is this just the qualifier for providence or providence itself?
