What the hell? 20$? I paid 15 for this season of GSL and am getting like 10x the content (if not more) plus higher quality production + higher quality play + higher quality casters.

their horrible outfits make them the worst casters in the world. harsh but true

? Trolling, or what do you mean?

Anyways, this is interesting b/c as far as I know this is the first event that has charged money for streaming a single event.

PPV concept has always been like this. The viewers count will go down, but if the number is high enough, they still make money and still gonna start others PPV tournaments in the future.

Personally, I'm okay with it although I'm a little annoyed. It's a niche market and as long as it makes money, it's gonna stay there.

20$ would be perfect but the results are leaked already (Parting will win) so not worth it.

$20 hahahahahaha
They don't actually think they have anything special to offer which is worth $20 for 20 hours of Starcraft right?
Sounds like a pathetic attempt to make some quick money to me.
I would be absolutely amazed if they manage to get 5k viewers.

I'm so happy Assembly is scheduled in the same weekend, atleast they will a great viewercount now.

But with that said, Fuck you. If Sundance hasn't proven that he has a vision for e-sports yet, that he listens to the fans with their every complaint --well... aside from Extended series-- then I could appreciate this reaction.

But... Sundance has proven that he cares. And he has said before that if e-sports is to be successful as a business it can't keep leaking money with advertisements being the only stopper.

Personally I'm fine with this. I would NOT have been fine with this if this was a year ago. Dallas was a terrible, TERRIBLE thing. But with the quality that MLG (and other tournaments) provide, I am more than willing to pay for it. 2011 was a test run for SC2 as a serious international e-sport and it widely surpassed pretty much everyone's expectations. It's time to pay the piper now and I'm sorry to those that don't understand that. I'll be enjoying watching this fantastic event without you guys I guess.

This sums up my thoughts well. The sense of entitlement is huge. I've honestly thought GSL undervalued their goods in my opinion. This is closer to pushing what I'd be willing to pay, but I'm certainly willing to give them a chance on it.

Not everyone can pay 20$ for one weekend... I don't know how you can be mad at people feeling entitled either when plently of other tourneys still offer lq streams. Also, I don't understand why you should really show loyalty to a tournament, you should watch what is best for you, so if people get mad that MLG decided to charge for ppv then they should go watch the other FREE tourney...

For the people who are "omg 20 bukks are you poor lul thats nothing", you have to consider that most SC fans are young, and probably don't have loads of money to spend. Obviously you can say that "well the game costs 60$ and look at how much your computer costs", but that's not the same, you can't compare them. I'm 15 and there is no way that i would pay 20$ just to watch ONE event, maybe for a month of GSL i'd pay.

Out of intrest, how much does PPV cost for the viewers of boxing/MMA or whatever else?

Also, someone should make a poll to see how many people are going to pay for this and how many are not.

I've edited my post on the first page with a poll.

you can quote your own poll/report it and it'll show up in multiple places but still work.

We should have this on the front page, to see what the % is like, if 20% are willing to pay, that could be enough for MLG to at least break even on the arena.

My only real complain about MLG is they've always had a mediocre stream. If they changed that, fine take my money. Some people will argue, but GSL has shitty or barely acceptable quality. They also have some of the best players in the world, it's a trade off imo, which they should improve some day.

Does anyone else think they'd get at least 4x the number if they just charged 5USD?

I'd love to pay to MLG because it's helps. But $20 for 2days seem to be a bit out of hand. I am a student, not a millionarie Wish it was like $5.

Bit harsh. GSL is arguably of at least equal quality and is much cheaper (a whole month of content for less). I agree that monetizing events through PPV can be a way of finally making eSports lucrative but it should be in relation to the competition.

Well it sounds like it's going to be a lot of content and just think of all the crap that people regularly spend $20 dollars on. I think a long history of mediocre free content has turned many people into penny pinchers when it comes to esports. Hopefully the content MLG produces this year will truly raise standards and people will see that content can be produced that is worth this amount of money. But I've been disappointed before. Maybe it will be the same kind of thing we've always seen and not be worth the money at all. Who knows.

This post really hits the nail on the head, and to be honest, if MLG gets a quarter of the viewers throwing down money for Winter Arena this will be a success.

For everyone saying 20 is cheap and everyone who does not pay are just greedy: you can't compare to going to the cinema, or theater, or having a nice meal. It's all about what you're asked to pay and what you SHOULD pay. Going to the cinema is really expensive but where's the alternative? The alternatives to high-level starcraft 2 are EVERYWHERE. If I was asked to pay a nickel every year for the air I breathe, I would be outraged. Not because it's expensive but because I shouldn't have to pay seeing all the alternatives.
I'd stop paying GOM aswell if I thought their pricing went too high, not because I can't afford it but because it's not worth it.

What is the basic championship experience?

The big convention style events that they had last year with the massive live audience

If I see another post comparing this to NBA PPV I am going to punch my monitor. The difference in scale between the NBA, MLB, and NFL is HUGE, those leagues have multibillion dollar television agreements, and sell out stadiums with 50k people at 50-500 a ticket. The NBA was a sustainable model before they introduced PPV online, they priced it at the level they thought would maximize revenue(Cost to provide the service are so low). MLG is not sustainable right now, most LAN tournaments are not. Its not even comparable.

Lean and mean........yep.

I would hate myself if I were to buy this. Also this would set a precedent. In the future you think you will be paying less as esports grows (if it does)? I don`t want 20 dollars to become standard for a 3 day event.

The price does seem quite steep considering it only encompasses a weekend worth of matches. I think that this is not the right time to try a PPV model with Assembly running during the same weekend, however, with that being said, I still plan on forking up the $20 to watch the event. The player list is quite stellar. I just hope that I am able to get my money's worth out of the weekend.

Bad timing, bad decision. I guess it took a lot of balls do do such a move, but i can not see it as a success. After everybody paid for their ESL,GSL,GSTL and MLG gold tickets,

With Assemby the same day, i'll be checking TL for reports and Liquipedia for results.
I am not good with quotes
