Isn't that quite the opposite ? It's $20 for an entire weekend, or about $1/hr if you watch it all. That's not exactly expensive.

for me it's gonna be either watching assembly and then checking the recommended vods, watching MLG at barcraft (if there's gonna be one for this in vienna) or not watching either live and then checking vods...

Theyre spending $100k+ on bringing together the best starcraft 2 players in the world, putting on high production, and youre telling them to fuck off? For 20 bucks? Thats being selfish, and asking for way more than you deserve. So many spoiled brats who don't appreciate anything This is all their choosing. They think this model will bring the best return. You think they are spending 100k on travel to host a tournament for fucking charity? That they know we like Starcraft so they wanna put on a show for us? Jesus Christ, I know sundance is a chill dude and MLG seems like our pals but they're still a fucking business who has to show something for all the capital investment they've received. You kids are delusional. $20 isn't a good price in the current climate with the other esports competition. I'm not going to just give them $20 cause 'well they spent a lot to put this tournament on, let's just be nice.' fuck that, we're the consumer, we call the shots.

You have to set your prices to match your market, which MLG isn't. Especially with another big event going on at the same time. This is borderline stupid to be honest. It does not matter that UFC or some other well established sport is 5 times more expensive, this is irrelevant for e-sports. The e-sports scene is not there yet and they will likely loose alot in ad revenue, much more than they will add with this new cash flow. You have to remember that GSL has no costs other than the production / stream. MLG is flying players (including a lot from Korea) to New York City and having them stay in hotels in Manhattan. That does not come cheap. Whether they will exploit the fact they have all the players in the same location or not remains to be seen, they will need to make it special enough so it doesn't look like it could have all been done from online / replays.

In a normal NBA season there are 1230 games that each last a few hours. If i counted correctly, there are 62 x Bo3 in the winter arena. I think its fair if not charitable to MLG to equate one Bo3 to one basketball game. That brings us to 62 matches for 20$ vs 1230 matches for 170$. thoughts? The NBA is subsidized by: 1 - far higher advertising revenue, 2- purposebuilt arenas owned by the teams sponsors (that can therefore be used during off seasons to bring in more money for the teams and sponsors when professional matches are not being played there.), contrasting with MLG which has to hire the event area every time. 3 - Merchandising on a far greater scale and with far greater range than MLG is capable of 4 - Live Broadcast coverage with networks fighting over the rights to be able to broadcast those games, vs MLG who have no such opportunity to market themselves to networks. MLG have to make their own money, the NBA can take it from mass media owing to their community being much larger and therefore a better target for advertisers. 5 - Personalities that raise the profile of their respective teams significantly via tie-in events. Michael Jordan, for example, whose high profile with SPace Jam and Nike Air Jordans significantly raised the profile of Basketball and the Chicago Bulls on an international level to children who then pestered their parents to buy them bulls or space jam merchandise. 6 - The NBA is also partially subsidised by the fact its member teams are franchised. Now, I have absolutely no idea how or to what extent MLG is subsidised, but I would very much doubt that the expenditure and subsequent return of MLG is even remotely comparable to the NBA, even when dealing in percentages and fractions. I would wager MLGs margins are lower than the NBAs have been at any point since 1996.

What a joke, ahahahaha. I get a whole GSL season for this. With the best competition and good Production quality + Casters. 20$ is just insane, 2.5$ might be ok.

The weird part to me is that this seems like a minor event, and you won't have any of the things that make MLG worth watching anyway (epic crowds, player interaction). From what I can tell this could just as well be 2 guys casting from replays, yet this is where they start putting a price tag on the streams?

If Sundance hasn't proven that he has a vision for e-sports yet, that he listens to the fans with their every complaint --well... aside from Extended series-- then I could appreciate this reaction. But... Sundance has proven that he cares. And he has said before that if e-sports is to be successful as a business it can't keep leaking money with advertisements being the only stopper. Personally I'm fine with this. I would NOT have been fine with this if this was a year ago. Dallas was a terrible, TERRIBLE thing. But with the quality that MLG (and other tournaments) provide, I am more than willing to pay for it. 2011 was a test run for SC2 as a serious international e-sport and it widely surpassed pretty much everyone's expectations. It's time to pay the piper now and I'm sorry to those that don't understand that. I'll be enjoying watching this fantastic event without you guys I guess. you want us to 'pay the piper'? i already have a gold membership with a horrible quality 'HD' stream. I'm not supporting this terrible business decision and your argument here makes absolutely no sense at all. the 2011 test run was done with a mediocre prize pool, and even after the dallas mess they still made a profit.

Looks like it's going to be assembly and then I'll watch the MLG vods a week later when they're free.
