Greetings teamliquid! This is going to be my first topic after lurking for years. How hard do you guys grind when you want to improve? I've found that I'll play on average 10-15 games a day, but when I know a lock is coming and I want to sneak into the next league I'll catch myself playing for 5-6 hours straight sometimes (minus the quick searches on new builds, strategies etc) After 5-6 hours I have a breaking point to where I know I need to put down the mouse and get some fresh air, while thinking about this I remembered just how long professional level players practice every single day. I couldn't imagine playing 10-12 hours every day, that takes some serious dedication and/or love for the game.
TLDR short answer-how long do you play straight when you're trying to get better/league up?
Poll: How long do you play when you're trying to get better/rank up3-4 hours (72) 31% 1-2 hours (61) 26% 6+ hours (51) 22% less than an hour (31) 13% 5-6 hours (21) 9% 236 total votes Your vote: How long do you play when you're trying to get better/rank up (Vote): less than an hour (Vote): 1-2 hours (Vote): 3-4 hours (Vote): 5-6 hours (Vote): 6+ hours

Damnit dude, I thought you were talking about dancing.
Because I go hard.
Um, I think I average about 3-4 games a month, really haven't played a lot lately.

pure gold. lol.
i only play team games, which im not sure you care about. but, i only play when friends are online, and then we play until we have to do something else. usually 1-2 hours.

I thought that too lol.
When I really want to get up a league i will probably put in about 7-8 hrs, this is usually around the time that my game will really start to slip because of fatigue.
LOL @ thread title. I grind it hard son.
I haven't played as much as I wanted to, but I'll play enough to learn from mistakes, work on them, and experiment. About 5-8 games through out the day for me.
I think you'll find a lot of people who really love starcraft here but don't play very often at all. I myself only play once or twice a month. Maybe for 1-2 hours at a time

Haha. I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately this thread didnt turn into something about the summer of '89 and DJ Pierre. Dammit.
Anyway, I usually go about 3-4 hours.

10-15 if I don't have anything to do.
But here's a fun game I told a buddy who is trying to work from gold to diamond that he should do while laddering: 1) Go to di fm (or some site similar) and choose a station that seems interesting by name 2) NO MATTER what that station turns out to be, even if you hate it force yourself to listen 3) play a ladder game, and... 4) if you lose. change the station 5) if you win, don't change. 6) repet
the hardest part is picking something you think is awful, then forcing yourself to listen to it for a game. it's fun to see psychologically how you start to like music because you win. (Associative property?) But it keeps music fresh while you play

About 4 hours per day. I find myself watching way too much than actully playing ,_,
I grind hard on my queens, grinding non-stop until they inject. Aw yeah.
Kidding aside, I alternate between playing BW and SC2, and a bit of Elder Scrolls. That and the responsibilities of real life, not enough time to really get hours of continuous play in.
About a game or two a day. Nothing more than that normally, tbh I just dont have the energy since studies are so tiring...
I used to play 4-6 when I tried to break into masters.
lol @ the thread title too. instantly opened the thread when it appeared.
6+ for me
I just love Blizzard games.

1-2 hours because I have several months to do it.
If i reallt decide to be very competitive for sc2 I'd probably go 8-12 hours a day or at least try that.
Well I've always stuck to a routine of about 2 hours a day, or every other day. When I want to rank up or, if I'm in the mood to really get some hardcore laddering done I can only play in increments. So say I play 2 hours in the morning and then in the evening I play another two.
The most I've ever played was like 10 hours straight because I was at a LAN that I paid for a pass to play in. It's a lot easier to sit down and grind it out if you're out of your comfort zone.

@QuanticNaNi johan lucchesi played 65 ladder games in a row.. holy..
Naniwa should be an inspiration to every sc2 player out there.

Voted for 3-4hr but it's actually very random. I get pissed off too quickly.
3 games a day, ever day.
If I have time or am feeling in the mood I'll do more, but I have full time job and stuff to do on the weekends, so it's hard to do more than that unless I accept that fact that the only two things I'm going to do in a day are work and work at starcraft.
I play 1-2 hours a night. I would play more if I had the time

Yeah I feel you. It's definitely hard to practice on monday-friday for me as well, some days I'm just so tired when I get home that I don't even want to put on my headset. Thankfully my weekends are free (one of the perks about being a shut-in I suppose)

almost always 10 games per day. sometimes more.
I can ladder team games for hours, but I really can't play 1v1 for more than one. >_< I just get mentally exhausted and mess up too much.
Depends on if I keep winning LOL
6+ hours. If Runescape has taught me anything; Complain->Grind->Complain->Grind in an endless cycle. Then eventually Rage quit because of bots.
Edit: I remember in season 1, I grinded my way from bronze to diamond (was best league at the time) in ~5 days with about 300 games played.
I'll probably play somewhere around 1-2 hours a day, but I'll play a crap ton on easy days.

around 4-5 hours, after that i start seeing starcraft units when i close my eyes
i have close to 400 wins this season...when i play i go strong for 4+ hours. if i lose i will watch some streams then go back at it. Sometimes my hands get to sore and i have to go take a break 1 -2 hours. ALl this and im still top diamond :S
5-10 games a day, which usually ends up being about 1-2 hrs.
even when i tell myself i'm going to sit down and play for 2 hours i always end up stop playing before that point. I think if i didn't get so attached to the result of the game i would be able to play for much longer sessions.

carpal tunnel cant grind ever again.

I lol'd
If I have nothing to do in a day, and I really want to rank up then I can play 6+ hours. Unfortunately I have had classes and haven't been able to play as much lately.
i wouldn't call my normal days grinding, i'l play for maybe 3-5 hours playing. when i am grinding (binging i call it) i will play between 10-30 hours straight.

For improvement at least 10, really depends though, but never less than 10.
I voted for 1-2 hours because I really shouldn't play more than that (I have other obligations stupid adulthood) but right now I'm playing 3-4.
Where is the 8+? Op is weak. :D
When I actually play, 6+, but I don't even play once a week. =(
1 to 2 hours a day when i'm serious, i want to do more though, i have the time i just lack the ability to play any longer than that.
during the beta, i used to play 40 games a day over the summer break... now, the max i've done during reading week is like 30 games in a single session and that's very occasionally. not really sure how long that is in hours though.
I always do this thing were I will play a lot of games a day for like a week streight and then I will burn out and not play for 2 weeks. It really sucks because it is really hard to get better when I keep taking such long brakes from playing. What I want to do it get to the point were I can play like 3-4 hours a day and do that at least 4-5 days a week.

Well I think it might be 1-2 hours only, because I really need free time to have an open mind about the game and Im currently pretty busy with work, university and my GF...
I'm limited by my parents, who only let me play 2 hours MAX a day, and not every day.
but sometimes they let me play more. 6 hours straight is my record so far (i think) on the new year. (...or maybe it was 8, i'm not sure when i started)
it depends like in weeks i play 3-4 hours ladder with breaks, but on weekends i play like 8+
Do you guys find that playing like 10 hours a day actually helps? When I do play 2-3 hours I feel like I'm hardly improving.
when i actually am looking to get into the next league cuz i feel that i am ready, i will at least 5 hours a day, 20-30 games a day, not counting breaks.
when i can, 6+ but thats not often anymore -_-
3-4 but am currently upping that to about 5-6 minimum. (much more on weekends, ofc) Creating a practice schedule...
I guess "how long do I play?" and "how long would I like to play?" would be very different and then there is "how long would your wife like you to play sc2?"
Usually less than an hour, 2 max. I find laddering so stressful and mentally draining that I actually can't make myself play once I have a long, close game. So... fight off a 4 gate or lose to it, then do a quick ling/bling war, then a 45 minute macro war.... boom, quit, Skyrim. I honestly don't know how you guys can keep playing after a really long nailbiter of a game. I guess if I lose a close game, sometimes I'll be jacked up enough to want to play more, but any close game that I win = quit, play something, anything single player, let my heart go back to a reasonable rhythm.
Depends on how I'm playing but I'll do about 10 games when I have the free time. But days like today where i get 2 zvz's lose then get bunkered in on megalopolis I just stop there.
