For those who haven't seen the Huk vs Aria game, it caused a lot of silly speculation in the community from husky's cast to Day9's daily, as well as everything else in general. Here's a link to the game:
So, I ended up doing an interview with him. Please show him support and remember he didn't have to do this interview, so please show respect. If you have any questions or anything else, just PM me on TL. Thank you to Turtle for translating.
"You recently gained a lot of attention with your game vs Huk after it was posted everywhere and there was a lot of speculation about your identity. What do you think about the recent attention and speculation?"
I didn’t know that game would be so popular. When you look at the game, I was not able to harass the left side of the expansions and just gave it to him. I thought i did terrible... By the way, because foreign community put commentaries and put videos on Youtube, I was kind of amazed and happy, but i also felt shy at the same time. I like the attention, and i feel great about it.

Were you on a BW team or playing professionally just to clarify rumors?" 아리아 선수에 관한 루머가 많은데요. 혹시 스타1에 팀이나 프로로 활동하셨나요??
아뇨 전 스타1에서는 클랜같은 것도 없었고 가끔 즐겨 하는 정도였어요. No, in Starcraft 1, I did not even have a clan and i just enjoyed it from time to time
-----------------------------
"What are your plans in SC2?"
Right now, I am just an amateur, but I want to become a professional starcraft player.
-----------------------------
Are you looking for a team to join to further your career?
I really want to join oGs team, because i saw oGs players playing when i first started playing starcraft 2. Plus, there are a lot of good players.
-----------------------------
What race did you play in SC1 and why did you pick Zerg in SC2?
I was zerg in starcraft 1 too. I just played zerg in sc2 because i played zerg in sc1. Zerg had some kind of attraction that terran or protoss did not have.

Who is the best player in sc2? Who was your mentor in sc1? I like DRG a lot. I saw him getting top place in Korean ladder and at this mlg. I thought it was him when I saw a game between DRG and MC. I can not defend those rushes.

Has there been anything holding your career back such as school or work?

Do you have anything to say to your fans who are cheering for you?
Cheering? I am too shy. I thought only Professional gamers would get cheers. Thank you for giving so much attention to an amateur! I am so happy and I wish more fun games would come out.

I've never done an interview before but I just tried to ask most of the important questions.
Things like streaming are a possibility, but it's all up to him (and his internet which is pretty terrible)... If you have any questions that aren't useless, or anything else, please PM me on TL. Thanks. Hopefully you learned more about Aria! Again, thanks to turtle for translating.
what was so special about this game is that aria played pretty much exactly how i imagined a recently switched broodwar pro would play and his fp view to look if he has been playing for a long while i wouldn't put too much faith in this guy but damn was he fast.
On December 05 2011 04:29 johnnywup wrote: y u no ask for replay pack? T________T that one game vs huk helped me immensely..imagine what a rep pack could do
Should have probably done that. Will get one soon, but it's difficult with time zones.
It's scary how good an amateur like Aria can be, imagine if he's pro. I hope he becomes pro in the future, and be like Leenock and greater. Most of the BW bonjwas started young and I don't see the big speculation of younger age being a factor.
If this is a legit interview, I am shocked. The guy played amazing, and had the game clearly won, but was just messing around with unit compositions. When you make a guy like Huk look easy to deal with, you know you are destined for great things.

There are a ton of extremely good Korean amateurs who people know nothing about, and some smart teams I hear who are interested in them. For TLPro, our replay team looks through all of HerO and Zenio's replays in ladder and in practice, and they see firsthand how good some completely random people are. AriA was only ever AriA, but there are many more players out there who are unknown amateurs, and I think a couple of BW smurfs as well. I think this guessing game is only going to get more and more interesting.
On December 05 2011 04:29 johnnywup wrote: y u no ask for replay pack? T________T that one game vs huk helped me immensely..imagine what a rep pack could do
Guh, that "y u no"... it's annoying... memes ugh. But I digress.
I think Aria played well, but can we just remember that he was playing zvp on the most favored z map in the pool for that MU, and that it was the most favored position (cross spawns)?
but what he says doesnt make much sense, the way he played it was either for fun or he didnt understand how archpm toilet works(how come someone who aspires to be a sc2 progamer doesnt know that?), thats why everyone speculated about bw pro because his mechanics on this replay (multitasking/apm) is better than ANY else available. Drg/nestea isnt even close to this mechanics.
Obligatory Liquid'Aria post. That aside, he looked really good vs HuK. Would be interesting to see how good he can get on a professional team. Also, oGs kinda need a really good Zerg (ForGG said JookTo is one of the best in the world, but I dunno).
insane how some random teamless high schooler can be as good or better than Huk who's been working his ass for over a year in korea (even if it was just one game)

Let's not judge people based on single ladder game, right ?
I am legitimately impressed by his humbleness and just his overall skill level as a teamless high schooler. The fact that he can take HuK that far into a game is proof we will be seeing Aria again. oGsAria? Maybe not, but I guarantee there are eyes on him.
AriA actually looked REALLY mechanically sound in that match, Imagine if he dedicated himself full time to the game. The kid's got talent. I hope he finds a team, or at least a clan in the near future. I'd love to see him attempt the Code A qualifiers.
Inb4 some team picks up Mujuk, Shinystar, and AriA. Teamless superstars XD
This is BS, i just can't buy it. He's either a pro or semi pro. There's simply no effing way that he didn't play in any clan... W/e, i really hope to see more of him though

You can be amateur and play in a clan, you know ...
When I watched the replay myself his mechanics amazed me and he had such good map control, I hope to see more from him! I just hope if he joins a team he doesn't change his name so we can all follow him
On December 05 2011 08:12 DeepBlu2 wrote: He is in a clan. He is in NEX. But not a team.
NEX clan must be huge, they seem to have an even bigger percentage of the hyped/good amateurs than By. in SC1.
Yeah and NEX isn't strict which is why it is so big. They often accept frankly, bad players, gold/plat, etc. Zenex is very professional though, at least before they fell apart.
And to elaborate on streaming, his internet isn't very good so you'd be looking at a 360-480p stream and that's only if he doesn't experience a lot of "jittering" like the stream constantly freezing because the servers are in california. Not to mention that he would be streaming at a very awkward time for most Americans and some Europeans, because of the time difference. Kind of surprised people went from thinking he's jaedong to not caring that much.

That's a bit different then, I think By. only accepts top amateurs, though not too sure about the Korean amateur BW scene.

Can someone contribute anything to this post? Is it true?
2. How can you call someone amateur and not mention that he is on NEX? you make it sound like he just picked up starcraft and plays like an hour a day.....

How aggressive do you wanna get with a fast third and an completely unharassed zerg who has a pack of mutas on the map. He used a warpprism and didn't build colossi until very late. Enough of a sign of huk for me.
I love how everyone's speculation regarding his playstyle was proved to be complete nonsense, just as I suspected. People were saying that he plays like someone with BW pro mechanics but with no understanding of SC2. Just further evidence that nobody actually knows what they're talking about, even Day9 a lot of the time.
If there's anything I learnt from Mass Effect 2, it's don't f**k with Aria.
While I wouldn't say he is quite Code S (yet), he definitely looked very promising in that famous game, solid mechanics, impressive map control and awareness, excellent multitasking (never missing unsynced injects), and overall great play to go toe-to-toe with HuK.

They sometimes scouted people for quickness in sc1. July was really bad at the game apparently, but because he had quick hands they started training him. He has really good multitasking, but his decision making and micro needs to be refined.
Would love to see this kid break into the bigtimes. I watched the stream of that game and HuK actually sat through the whole replay on his stream etc. He was (apparently) as impressed with Aria's play as everyone else was all things considered. He had to work for that win, and basically won from behind with a couple of archon toilets. Without those, he most likely would've lost, and handily at that.
well we might be seeing a neo-NaDa tbh. remember when NaDa was an amateur and he beat a pro and then went on to win KPGA tours or something? this looks exactly like it.

Yeah, this happens a lot in Volleyball too. Height and agility don't usually come together so when they do, teams take them regardless of skill and train them.
I really hope Aria get's some team. He's still in high school so he has the motivation.

That's what it's usually like, haha. But even his internet in Korea is pretty bad. And when it's being routed to the US, it's pretty bad. A lot of times people with sufficent bandwidth have problems routing to the servers when they are overseas as well. I haven't tried setting up his stream yet so only time will tell. And it's important to mention he may not want to stream. I'm not trying to pressure him at all. Even this interview was completely up to him, and if he doesn't want to stream, he's not going to stream.
I wasn't impressed by his mechanics. I counted 5 different times when husky highlighted over his hatcheries and no inject was going and wouldn't start for quiet some time.
Also, he should have had more expansions and macro hatches when he was 5 base vs 3 base.
Archon toilet is pretty much the lamest thing at the moment, right up there with warp prism sentry drops cutting the main off -.-

Macro != mechanics.
You can have perfect mechanics and still miss injects. Conversely, I played a guy earlier who had near flawless macro (<30energy on all queens at the end of the game) and awful mechanics - little map awareness, multitask, generally poor action efficiency, etc.
People are impressed with Aria because he constantly cycles, has almost flawless map awareness, constant unit movements and a whole bunch of other stuff. Macro is just one part of it which he does pretty well (not perfectly).

A lot of speculation about what?
About him being a BW professional player, specifically Jaedong.... In case you didn't read the thread. ^^
Here are a few replays he gave me. If you are impressed, please support Aria! Enjoy.
thanks. any update regarding streaming?
I don't know if he would even get featured, if he would, then possibly. Chances of him getting featured seem relatively low, however, which is unfortunate.
People in here are giving people in the AriA thread way to much shit. The speculation about him being Jaedong was not that likely to be true and most people did not think he was Jaedong. Second of all, with those mechanics he could easily been a A or B-teamer zerg, but it just shows how much more mechanical heavy korean BW zergs are compared to zerg players in sc2, amateur or not.
What we thought however was that he was ArtOfAriA, B-teamer or practice partner(?) for eSTRO. He could still be this guy, because if he was just practicing with their players he would techniqly not be on a team and have a progaming license and therefore be an amateur. Just like how DongRaeGu was practice partner with CJ Entus.
Also, why would you laugh at us and him for not being some "progamer who would rape everyone in sc2"? The guy wasn't even sc1 progamer and still overshadows almost every progamer in sc2 when it comes to mechanics lol.

I'm guessing from all the publicity he got for the huk vs aria game he would have a pretty high average viewer count though.
Ahhh I remember watching this game. It's been a while and the speculation died, but good to see it has now been resolved. Anyway, it is a healthy sight to see unknown players of high school student age performing so well. This is a necessary prerequisite for a sport's development and sustainment of play.
