Ohhh I love these things.

I feel like they will mostly be discussing MW3 and other non-blizzard products. I don't think they will talk too much about SC2 or D3. Any talk about release dates will probably be generic, such as "Q2 2012, Q3 2012"

It's just like 2009 and SC2, they set a time frame for the beta and a window for release, investors don't just care about Activision, they want to know the whole story. Besides it's always nice to hear about the numbers behind the games, it just gives you an insight into the video game industry.

They do not usually release any new info on release date/even xpacs during these calls. Although we may have new statistics as to how the games are doing financially, such as how many players World of Warcraft have lost in the last quarter.
They also usually like to use positive tones, such as "MW3 is going to be a worthy successor to MW2 and we expect it to become another blockbuster in its genre", instead of "the hype is all about BF3 atm to a point even my own kids are playing that game, I think we shouldn't expect MW3 to be as successful as MW2. We will however make it up by releasing more DLCs and make money from various micro-transactions".

Nothing surprising there. Probably will be talking about future plans and how well MW3 sold (like we don't know already).

800k, they reported 11.1 last quarter.

WoL/HotS: - Players were excited to try the new units. Positive buzz. Lots of viewers on youtube. - Blizz Dota same. Free -> Microtransactions in!
D3: - Real money system BETA soon.
2012 is looking exciting. "At least" 2 major releases.
|
Blizz dota to be free. Not sure if this was confirmed before?

10.3 million is still more than double 2nd place... How SWTOR and GW2 does will basically dictate whether it dies or lives in the next 12-24 months.

Questions now. Soon done.
|
Questions time: - WoW subscriber numbers and where are they going. --- Don't provide forecasts, announcement was well received. Content of patch also hyped. The majority of the decline was in the east (asia). China represents HALF of their user base. Historically december is good month.
- D3 offer for WoW sub --- Offer received well, good value.
They also think that D3 might be stealing some of the subs.
|
On November 09 2011 07:06 B00ts wrote: 10.3 million is still more than double 2nd place... How SWTOR and GW2 does will basically dictate whether it dies or lives in the next 12-24 months. Not likely. Even if they lose half of their subscription base, as long as they reflect those changes in hardware upkeep, they could keep WoW going for awhile.
On the LR portion, China makes up for over half of WoW subs. O_o
|
What did WoW peak at? 10 million is a fuck ton of people. Are there any graphs showing how it has fluctuated?

I am actually impressed at the WoW numbers. Did not expect them to be so low when it comes to subs. 0.o

They made a big deal over 12m last October.
11.4, 11.1 and now 10.3 for the quarterly reports this year.
|

- Blizzard operating margin. 55-50% rage usually, now 40%. Forecast for 2012 plox --- No surprise the margin is down, lots of products in development. 5! Lots of development costs but no revenue. Looking good next year. The margin structure isn't fully disclosed. Basically no need to worry.
- D3 beta revelations so far? Feedback? --- Extremely positive feedback. The content exposed is very limited, want to save for release. Common question: more invites?
|

Hot seat for Blizzard right now. What I'm thinking:"Margins going down this year, well wait for next year shareholders! We will blow your fucking head off!"
|
- D3/WoW bundle, idea to bring more users for both WoW and diablo. Curious about what you want to do with it and what you expect. --- More revenue and will bring players to D3. The larger the D3 community is the greater the "Micro transaction action house is".
- WoW 10.3 subs. How will it move next 12 months? --- ??? Skipped ???
- Pressing on about D3 and WoW profability. --- Explaining basic stuff.... BUFFER
|
Interesting note: they have a very limited amount of testing in the D3 beta. The tone seemed like they were going to keep it tremendously limited, only testing key features and abilities. This is in contrast to the WoW and SC2 betas, in which almost all finished content was available before release.
|

nope.

Back from buffer --- Safe and secure Auction house but hard to predict the volume of the transactions.
////// New dude ////// - Big patches before during WoW. How much of an upswing of subs? --- New patches not intended to drive subs numbers, but it does drive engagement.
- Skylanders sold/figures sold --- Not discussion exact figures. Higher then expected!
////// New dude ////// - CoD to china. Any plans? --- Development going well. Got a version running, build a microtransaction engine that looks and feels like a chinese one.

|
FINAL QUESTION - CoD Elite. How significant is it in the current quarter and going in to -12 --- Not going to move the quarter results significantly. Will be better in 2012 due to long subscription models. Want to expand the value for it. Depending on the adoption rate it will grow more features. Key strategic point, lots of work going in to it.
That's it!

Listening to Morhaime talk, is kind of refreshing. He hammers home that he's doing things for the players, and that 'yeah we'll make money from it probably', and just the way he talks and responds and his kind of mannerisms, make him very much more 'nerdy' and 'programmer' feeling than some sleezy ceo of a big corporation who doesn't even know how games are made.
quarter numbers are down, but it was a given with no releases, next quarter should be huge, with 4.3 for WoW releasing sometime in the next month, and d3 slated for january.

They are going to make money with it for sure, but I don't think it will be millions and millions upon profit from it. Probably more for the overhead costs (servers etc)

Oh shit...another MMO. I know what I'm doing for the next few years of my life....damn you blizzard and your great games!
|
If WoW is mostly losing subscribers in Asia, it's not that big a problem since their prices are much lower there. The company's P/E is around 25, which pegs them as a mostly mature company, not a growth one.
|
I hope Blizzard makes a shitload of monthly earnings with Diablo 3 (marketplace) and the new WoW expansion (hopefully increasing subscriber numbers), so that they can pay all the checks within the company for the longer period of time. This will provide perfect conditions for a long support of starcraft 2 and that`s everything I`m hoping for.

so nope, it's not mw3. cod series is their real cashcow now. It's probably because of wow or something.

LOL @ all the people predicting the demise of MW3 and WoW in this thread.
MW has around 10 million preorders and will probably outsell everything this holiday.
WoW still standing at 10 million subs.
Just because you don't like those games(I know I don't) doesn't mean they are a flop or something.

people these days invest more for short term than long term. Good earnings report was expected, so people buy. Once they make enough money, people sell. Video game stocks are tricky, many times companies will have good sales but stocks end up going down anyways. There's alot going on here.

If Blizzard's DotA turns out really well, it could quite possibly attract more potential SC2 buyers.

I don't see that happening, it would really have to do a lot above and beyond DOTA 2 while also competing with HON, LoL and Bloodline (if they want it to take the arena direction). I think people already have too much invested in those games or will be switching to DOTA 2 when it comes out.
|
Any relationship between Mw3 and the value of blizzard/activision stock is based on how the game was expected to do. Now we're seeing how it's actually doing, and that portion of the stock's value is likely valued with the expectation that mw3 does fantastic, and if it is only doing really good then there will be a correction.
To us, the graphs may look impressive, but people may have expected them to do better, and their share values would have reflected those expectations. Which explains any drop in value, regardless of the fact that they're making money, they were probably expected to make more.
