Hey everyone,
We really appreciate everyone's feedback and we want to work with you to improve your viewing experience as much as possible. Here is a list of the issues we've identified and the steps we are going to take to remedy them:
CURRENT:
Issue 6: You are using an old version of Shakuras! Solution: Unfortunately we had created a new cloaked version but turned out to not work. Players played on the old Shakuras until we brought in a corrected version. Implementation Date: This was already implemented, you will see newer versions of Shakuras in later rounds.
Issue 8: I don't like the new theme! Solution: Well, there really isn't a solution here. We are going to be constantly changing and updating the theme between events, because we feel like it's important to have a fresh and interesting look. I'm not saying we're going to always hit it right on the money or please everyone, so please continue to give us feedback on our new looks so we can learn from these experiences. Implementation Date: We are always trying to make our experience and theme better.
Issue 9: The cloaked version of the map makes the replay only show one resource/supply bar at a time. Solution: We worked with the map maker Superouman and in the later rounds he figured out a way to show both Implementation Date: You will see both supply counts at the same time in later rounds. These are NOT very old maps/games from old patches before the double supply/resource count was added by Blizzard.
Issue 11: DJ Wheat is solo casting! Solution: We strongly believe that the desync issues presented by dual casting when the casters are not in the same physical location are extremely frustrating to viewers. Dual casting is without a doubt the way to go, and we have the vast majority of our casts with dual casters, but DJ Wheat had nobody really local to him to cast with. However, we are big fans of Wheat and believe he is a fantastic caster, and rather then not include him, we decided to have him solo cast. Implementation Date: N/A
Issue 12: The Tastosis audio is kind of echo-y! Solution: We have been working with Tastosis to try to resolve or minimize this issue. They actually went out and bought a new mic just for this, and there's been some issues with their room's acoustics. Tastosis has been great in working with us and it will get slightly better as the event progresses. Implementation Date: Ongoing
Issue 13: There is a delay between when the games are broadcast and when they show up on youtube! Solution: We apologize for this, our goal is to get them up the day after but there are some technical and staffing issues we're trying to resolve to get them up asap. Implementation Date: Ongoing
Issue 14: We cannot watch VODs on the IPL site in Standard Defination, only High Defination! Solution: This was a tough decision which was made because of the high volume of requests for HD. We are working on a solution to watch VODs in lower quality. As a stopgap solution, you can watch our VODs on youtube as well! http://www.youtube.com/user/IGNProLeague Implementation Date: Ongoing
Issue 15: Not a fan of your website! Solution: We are working on improving our website, I will be able to give more details as I get them! Implementation Date: Ongoing
FIXED:
Issue 1: The video is too dark! Solution: We are going to increase the Gamma on our casts. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 2: The scoreboard is too long/large! Solution: We are scaling down the length and size of the scoreboard. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 3: The score screen font is too hard to read! Solution: We are changing the font to be a little bit larger and blockier. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 4: The IPL channel was taken over and I got spammed with ads! Solution: We were maliciously attacked yesterday by someone behind a proxy ip. We are working with Justin.TV to create better security methods for our channel. We sincerely apologize that this happened and we will try to make sure this doesn't happen again. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 5: The Zerg Workers report in the score screen is off! Solution: SC2Gears has a bug with Zerg workers. We should have caught this before, we apologize, we will be adjusting the numbers. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 7: The game sounds are too low in some games! Solution: We are manually adjusting all game sounds when we create our broadcasts. We normally err on the side of caution in terms of needing to hear the commentators, but going forward we will make extra care to make sure the game sounds are at a good volume. Implementation Date: FIXED
Issue 10: The player images are a little off. Solution: I am working with our video team to look at them. They were trying for a certain aesthetic/look that did not end up translating as well as it could have and we are working on seeing how we can update them. Implementation Date: FIXED
We really do appreciate, value and actually do read all of your feedback. This is a great place for you to leave feedback but we will also be checking the other TL threads, as well as all of our other community websites and social media. We want to make a product that the entire community enjoys, so help us make our experience better for everyone!
Thanks for all of your support of the IPL!

That about covers it, but please give Wheat a partner in crime!
The new design is a bit creepy, Idras eyes will haunt me in my sleep now. But not a dealbreaker by any means.

seriously have soo much respect for you guys for keeping up with the complaints and helping fix any problems you hear about from viewers.
mucho love!

awesome!
What about the problems with constant ads? I stopped watching yesterday because of this.
|
I really like what i've seen of season 2 so far, looks smart and well done keep it up, easily the most top class non-korean production.

Good to see proactive feedback response. Even with these reported issues, your production values are still way awesome.

Really would like to be able to see the supply of both players at the same time.

My only real complaint is the one that can't be fixed (8) oh well I guess i'll live, haha.

The only other issue was that your special version of the map makes the replay only show one resource/supply bar at a time. That might be out of your hands.

We actually worked with superouman and in the later rounds he figured out a way to show both. It's unavoidable for the first few rounds though. Will add that to the OP!

Nice, this was my biggest issue.

While I can't give you much feedback that has not been covered on the league itself, I would like to say I really like the IPL feedback thread. Putting the major issues in a clean and objective manner on the OP, and keeping it updated, is really something that everyone should be doing and should save you guys from reading countless posts about the same thing and keep the thread cleaner.
|
It's pretty amazing how pro-active and community pleasing IPL is being here. Really hope it pays off and your still doing the good stuff years from now

Wheat is a solo caster because we feel that replay desync is a serious issue that really harms the overall quality of the cast. All of our casting duos actually sit next to each other when they are casting.
As for the player images, added this to the OP:

What about the solution they used at TSL3, didn't they have a program specially for that? Is that program unavaible, unreliable or is there some reason I'm just missing? Because I don't remember any other tournament saying they used something similar, actually.

Is it possible to watch vods either on Jtv or IPL website in SD? My internet just can't handle the HD

R1CH's program reduced the problem but didn't eliminate it - IIRC it told the casters where they were in relation to each other and left it to them to adjust.
I actually like the new theme, only the player images seem weird.

Our engineers are saying they are working on a fix to watch in SD today, I am literally watching them draw on a whiteboard as I type this and I see numbers like 540p and 360p and other stuff. Otherwise you can watch the broadcast in our jtv archive at: http://www.justin.tv/ignproleague/videos

Only thing that made me wannna cry was the old shakuras, im not a big fan oof the new theme but dont really care too much either way, well done with IPL it owns!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the updates, most of those issues are pretty minor but it is nice you took the time to respond to all of them!

Haha thanks, but the Archive has the same problem, there's no 360p in archives.
I guess I'll just wait till it's fixed on the website.

awesome to see this kind of improvement from the beginning I also noticed, game 3 video didn't worked for me, wanted to see the IdrA game... not sure whether this already got reported though

Wow. Did not expect that, awsome to see IGN react to what people say about the league so quick.

The program takes quite some getting used to tbh. Basically you get a relative timer on your screen and it tells you where everyone else is in relation to you who is in on the cast. One of you has to keep an eye on that and speed up/slow down the replay to try and keep it as in sync as possible. Obviously this can't be done on the observers end either. It's one more thing to keep track of and it takes some practice.
|
Wow this is sooo cool :D Way to go IPL, making an effort to consciensly get feedback. You guys are gonna be loved by the community for sure!

Good job IPL. Showing NASL how to do it - no bs, no excuses, just results. Great work.

Enjoying everything quite a lot. Your OP seems to have everything on base. The only other change I would like to see would for IPL3 when you do qualifiers, use a point system instead of a top 4 system.
|
You guys are doing this so well, creating your own thread and actively logging issues.
I didn't have too many problems with the stream yesterday, and the new theme is kinda cool, but 1) would be a nice implement.
Also, I don't know if I am the only one feeling it but the music just seems slightly too loud compared to the casting, and I have to keep changing the volume. Wondering if anyone else felt that. Not a deal-breaker in the slightest.
Great day, hope it continues like this.
|
Oh my god IPL you are so awsome, i wish more were as good at taking constructive critisism and communicating with the community like you are, this is great People see that you are taking note of the complaints, and what you are doing to fix them. This will also save you from alot of complaining in the future, that you were so good and fast at comming with some responses.

2 things. First of all, your ability to take feedback and grow from it is INCREDIBLE. Seriously, massive props to you for this. Like huge, cause it's really nice to see.
Second, and this is a more fundamental than things like overlays, is the delay between the games being played, and them being broadcasted. It's far far far too long. I know that live games aren't viable online without the production being bad and the possibility of stream cheating, but it should never be as long a gap as it was in IPL1 and IPL2. TSL had the right idea, within a week should be the maximum gap, preferably less. Otherwise, the impact of the result in precisely nil. For IPL3 this should be priority to get sorted out.
|
This thread is a lesson for all other tournaments out there on how to address criticism proactively.
Well done and look forward to the implementation of the changes.
|
Slightly off topic, but could you tell me what the music used is during the 'Ad in progress' screen?

100% percent agree with this point. At the same time, I also understand that there is a serious tension between high production quality verses the delay to broadcast, given limited resources.
However, I still think the time between a match played and broadcast needs to be cut down dramatically somehow. For instance, in yesterday's (USA) broadcast, Minigun was referred to as "Root Minigun", even though Root has been disbanded for about 3 weeks now, a little jarring!
Also, recent tournament results and match results are super important for context. Imagine that HuK was participating in the IPL and his match was played before his DreamHack/Homestory wins but broadcast afterward, that would be very important for the viewer to know and understand, but difficult to smoothly incorporate in the broadcast.
Not to mention that strategies are evolving quickly still and might be out-of-date by broadcast.
I don't have a solution or know the right mix, just want to voice my concern.
|
It's pretty awesome that IGN not only looked at all the issues but took the time to post on TL about their fixes. Nice job kids
|
Thanks for the updates! There's no better way to get back into the good graces of the community than constant communication. Even MLG which fucked up horribly made a huge comeback because of their communication. Glad to see you guys doing the same thing!
|
Thanks for the update
Despite yesterdays attack, this is looking very promising. Keep it up!
|
|
Wow, I wish the people I worked with kept status lists this detailed. Keep up the great work guys, can't wait to tune in again.
|
Thanks for bringing a well thought out free league to the community, and keeping everyone up to date. It's nice to know you listen to feedback.
Edit: I only hope this seasons results don't get leaked early like last time. That's the one thing that sucked about season 1.
|
I... I just don't know what to say...
They listen to their audience They implement changes to feedback They have sky-high production values And Their VODs are FREE!?!!?!?1?11.!?!>?
So. Much. Win.
However, the sooner they part ways with CatsPajamas' pompous, superficial, repetitive commentary, the better.
|
Oh you are the best, recognize errors, fix instantly
|
great job! , hope you dont get attacked again.
whats a ghost version of a map? why u need to use those? so results dont get leacked ??
|
It's things like this that make ipl my favorite league to watch. Keep up the good work.
|
I am super impressed with the speed in which you addressed and responded to the viewer concerns.
IPL is the closest we've come so far to a perfect online league, from what we've seen.
After more of the best players in the world qualify in later seasons and the spoiler issue gets resolved, I don't think I could come up with a single criticism for the IPL.
|
man IGN, i'm impressed =) keep this up and you will be the ultimate powerhouse in online tournaments
|
|
You could give Wheat a very analytical caster so that it wouldn't matter if they were desynced slightly since he would never be doing any play by play. Maybe some pro wants to take on this role in their spare time? I'd say Idra but he's playing in the tourney so who knows how that would go.
|
I browse TL frequently, but I've got no knoweldge of what IPL/IGN is, what it stands for, or what they've been doing. I even went to their website, it doesn't even tell me what IGN means. ??
|
You've pretty much taken the feedback from prior streams/casts/etc. and fixed all of the concerns...even caster desync...this is how an SC2 tournament should be run. Glad to see you all setting the bar, great content so far!
|

IGN Pro League and used to be International Gaming Network but idk if it even stands for anything now.
|
IGN:
Could you please not set the control groups to hidden. I really enjoy watching how the pros group their units. I know you get a little more screen room, but I don't think it's worth it.
Also, if, for example I see Protoss group a bunch of units in his main, and I also see a drop coming, I know "Toss will stop this NP." So it helps me understand the game as well .
I think Painuser and Catspajamas turn it off, Tastosis doesn't, and DJWheat doesn't. Make it 3 for 3!
|
One thing I have a very small issue with is that in the games there appears to be another "player" in the game (blank line on production tab etc.). What is the purpose of this? Because all it does IMO is not allow you to see both supplies and, thus, hinders our information while watching the game.
|
That has been explained on Page 1 OPKutty.
|
On July 16 2011 10:08 SrRaven wrote: That has been explained on Page 1 OPKutty.
Oh ty, must have skimmed over it the first time. Still I was also just wondering what the purpose of it actually is in maps like that.
|
I'm having trouble faulting anything
- I don't think there is any reason to rework the portraits, just the "goggly" eyes.
- The font in the stats at the end of the game is actually quite hard to read
- Do not read or take advice from the JTV chat, its worse than youtube comments and will give you eye cancer
Very impressed so far, great casters, professional and excellent production, almost perfect
|
I still feel that the gap between the time the actual match being played and them being broadcasted is far too long. Its quite jarring occasionally when casters mention stuffs/events that make that v evident.
|
You guys are doing good, though I agree with the theme complaint, the baldurs gate feel doesnt exactly feel right, and the players look kinda creepy with the diablo-esque music. And I think you need to delay the win screen for a bit after the gg or atleast wait for the casters to finish talking and show the final state of things, it's almost like getting booted after the win when that win screen flashes.
Overall I think this is a very polished production
|
Issue 3: The score screen font is too hard to read! Solution: We are changing the font to be a little bit larger and blockier. Implementation Date: This will be implemented for Day 7's broadcast. Implication: Day 1-6 broadcasts were rendered ages ago
You improved the website during S1 using community feedback, which was great. Now the site is back to worse than ever.
Nobody is interested in viewing games played 2 months ago.
People ARE interested in the results of tournaments played 3 months ago; why on earth is http://www.z33k.com/starcraft2/tournaments/710-ign-pro-league-season-two-qualifier-1/brackets still the world's biggest secret?
|
The links for the IdrA/Drewbie game are off; the game one and two links both link to game one, the game three link links to game 2, and there's no sign of game 3 anywhere.
|
I'm sadly disappointed by IPL2's production value. The IPL went from having the best production value in the west to...this. I'm glad that you're addressing the supply and nameplate problems, but the steampunk theme does not belong in Starcraft. Whats next, castles and knights? Cavemen and dinosaurs? Egyptians and pyramids? Good grief. The fighting game theme of IPL1 worked because it was crisp and minimalistic. I want to watch the games, not be distracted by gigantic overlays and creepy portraits. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I like how the overlays transition and I like all the additional stats you folk provide, but I just can't stand the theme... Its too bad because I really enjoy your casting team, you have some of the best folks in the business, but I think I'm going to have to sit this IPL out.

Anyway, I came to talk about today euro broadcast (didn't see the US one so dunno if it happened there too) 720p+ just gives a black screen 720p is...i don't know the english term...google translate says it's "interlaced". It's the same effect you had when you captured TV shows several years ago, there are some bands on the screen on moving objects. It's an encoding problem, which wasn't present when I watched the first night US broadcast. The quality itself is good, it's only the moving objects that are affected.

IGN is slowly but steady growing to be my favorite event organisation. Brilliant Production, brilliant reflexion and good casters and games.
What I found pretty good is that there are no koreans. Dont get me wrong I like to see an international tournament scene, but sometimes its just like another league of players

I was very critical of Painuser before but in the IPL he has found his stride, I've enjoyed the casts.
|
I am sorry for the flawed observer mod
|
Woohoo IPL great production as always
|
Sorry if this has already been covered:
Score screen is silly. What's important is stuff like: Resources gathered, workers built, resources lost.
Resources spent, Units lost is rather useless tbfh.
|
You covered all of my concerns: theme, supply etc.
What I have to ask is how on earth did IPL go from being the top dog with production quality to this mess? It's like you took 100 steps forward season 1, and 1000 backward in season 2.
Needless to say I was very stoked for season2 but since it's started my interest has completely faded. :/
edit: when i say theme issue I don't mind the steampunk theme. What's bad is it looks like it was made by 6th graders. The cartoony fighting came style you did for season 1 was not only cooler (totally subjective) it actually looked very crisp, clear and professional. I find it hard to believe the same people who ran s1 are behind s2.
|
Im trying to watch idra vs drewbie game 3 at http://www.ign.com/ipl/videos but when i click on game 3 it goes back to game 1 :S I found it on youtube while writing this but it still doesn't work on ign site.
|
The reason why there's such a big difference between the two seasons is because Wellplayed.org was responsible for all the production in season 1. In this season, IGN's going all in-house development.
|
I know this is on Tatstosis' end, but the audio quality when they cast isn't great. I love them casting, but it sounds like they are using one mic together and gives it a very airy feel.
|

well that explains the gigantic drop in production.. I was right.. it's not the same people.
|
I'd like to be able to see the targeted player's hotkeys like a normal observer.

Minor issue with your VoDs on the IPL-homepage: You spoil the second game of any series because if the titel. For example: IPL S2 - Winners Round 1 - PlayerA vs PlayerB - Game 1 of 2 => you know whoever won the first game won the entire series IPL S2 - Winners Round 1 - PlayerA vs PlayerB - Game 1 of 3 => whoever won the first game has to have lost the second one
Anyway. Keep up the good work! Even with the issues you are having you still have consistantly amazing production and that is really something to be proud of :D
Edit: i got this link from the broadcaster, but i wouldn't have found it otherwise. It would be helpful if you put it in the jtv-description or the official ipl-homepage
|
I would like to add that Painuser spoiler the last game (in Brad-OK game) how is winning by saying something in the line with "Great many east European player going throw here, [names a few including winner]"
+ Show Spoiler +Expected White-Ra winning but could be a more important match.
Other then that: Still great work feels more alive then NASL by having the rotating casters and ofc great games
Edit: spoiler tag sortof and spelling
|
Love how IPL responds to feedback really well. Looking forward to the rest of the tourny!

With IPL 1, the website design was great. Clean, simple, with all the important links easy to get to. There was a simple, clean main page explaining all the important info. There were links to the bracket and schedule right there up top, and the bracket was great since it had match times actually listed on it.
This design was scrapped for this new season, and I don't know why the design was changed. Where did the clear, simple bracket page go? Where's a proper schedule page with info that goes further out than 2 days? Why is it broken down into separate sites for the main page, then the league pages? Once you find your way to the IPL2 page, you find some of the information you want, but the main page there is confusing. There are these match cards that take you to videos, and then you don't know if what you're watching has already happened or is live or is going to happen. And the bar at the bottom of the page apparently doesn't get updated so it's showing matches from yesterday down there, and with no match times on it. The bracket page is alright, but again, no match times.
Basically I thought the IPL1 site was the best I've seen for a SC2 tourney because there was no confusion whatsoever and it was updated frequently. This new multi-page design with all these new bells and whistles leaves me wishing there was more of a "if it ain't broke" approach with this one.
|
If I could just make a friendly suggestion, please make it CLEARLY visible on the IPL front page exactly when the next set of matches will be broadcast. Outside of twitter, the TL thread and the google calendar at the bottom of your website (which wasn't updated until today) it's hard to see when the next scheduled set of matches.
|
I think you guys cast the qualifier rounds too long. 22 Days I kind of lost interest in the tournament when the official tournament starts.

abit curious aswell. I never watch the IPL. Not because i don't want to, but it feels pointless to wait for the results to catch the EU rebroadcast, should just be one stream, with better broadcasting times. US and EU watching at the same time is possible.

I really love the IPL, you guys are so on top of things its hard to imagine other companies/platforms doing the same. All grievances i had all already being adressed, and btw i love the new theme.
But there is one issue the posts above me bring up, and i have to agree: the website
It would be great to see a more transparant structure to it. How do i get my information the fastest way possible in a logical lucid way. Players come to your site for: - Bracket overview - (updated)
- Upcoming matches
- NA/EU broadcasting times
- Match results
- Vods
- The stream itself
Sadly only thing really easy to get to is the stream, which many viewers probably watch through justin.tv or here on tl.net anyway. The rest of the information is clustered, confusing, out-of-synch with results, but like i mentioned before: due to a untransparant structure of the site - not very logical to get to. Even when you get there you encounter the non-updated results. I understand spoiler-safety but there should always be sought after information within 2 mouseclicks away.
Broadcasting times could simply be solved by a sidebar-topbox featuring everyday's time/date with NA/EU adjusted timezones.
This is just suggestion in the margins tho, overall i really like the IPL - and the best thing is the community really sees their input and constructive criticism followed up by timely implementations. Keep it up!
|
maybe i'm just ignorant, but is there somewhere i can view the upcoming schedule??
i know that there is a schedule on the ipl website (IPL Calendar), but it doesn't tell me the entire schedule. For example, when will the winners bracket semifinals be played?
Can you guys just put placeholders in temporarily or has it not been decided yet when the later rounds will be aired or in what order?
EDIT:
I love everything about the league. Not 100% sold on the new style/theme, but still love the league. Keep up the awesome work.

i might be mistaken, but when i actually check it's somewhere around 6000-8000 depending on who is playing. ret vs select got way more viewers than bratOk vs stalife.

It was like 10,000 viewers last time I checked it out, its been bouncing around in that area generally.
|
The color is off on the stream. I feel the stream color looks off/weird. When compared to playing the game and/or watching other streams.
|
Great games not much to complain but the old style overlays and player designs was much better. The comicbook/streetfighter looking overlay/pictures was freaking amazing and made me want to watch the current ones are just bad some of the pictures make the people look cross eyed and just stupid.

Hey all, thanks so much for all of your feedback. We are continuing to work on a lot of these issues, but I've updated the original post with some new issues. Please continue to give us feedback to improve everyone's viewing experience, we really value that!

I hate to be such a fanboy, but I have to tip my hat how well organized this tournament is. I love the theme (makes this tournament so much more fun), I love the music. I love how feedback is adressed. and I love how you, Alex interact with the community. NASL can learn a lot here.
|
Amazing list, glad to see you listening and putting effort into fixes! Great tournament so far!
|
i really like the high production value, especially todays highlight series was just amazing. just great entertainment. need the vod!
|
Sound lapses from low to high at times, please try to normalize it as it scared the shit out of me at 04:00 in the morning when I was studying.
Great work so far else !

Ok, big issue here: Please stop doing reruns during "live" casting if they are up as VODs, one exception I am fine with is if it's like main cast for US then one rerun for EU at EU times(and or other time zones). But please stop with all the constant reruns( for adprofit? or whatever). Due to me constantly tuning in to reruns I have stopped watching IPL altogether.
Also, you should try to label it better on TL when you are streaming, like IPL 2 WR/WB Day x and IPL 2 LR/LB Day x / IPL WB Day 2 EU Recast for example. And always try to be in the ON AIR: section as opposed to the Live user streams section.

bring in some new maps! superouman probably knows a ton of great maps being part of the map-making community. i'm sure he could suggest a few good ones. or just check out the MotM, Iccup or TPW maps that would give me a reason to watch ipl more often and make it stand out from the large number of tournaments in sc2.
|
Add Korean qualifiers and interest will increase twofold.
|
Is it just me, or is it not clear what is happening on IPLTV? I knew it was team league yesterday because of a thread here. I have no idea what is going on with IPL2, never being certain when I tune in if it's a IPL2 match, or just a random(?) cast or re-run.
|
Suggestions
Painuser needs to look into the camera, any good caster does this a lot
Maybe a bit of a dress-code, casual-formal seems to work best
|
The lack of a schedule is just so so so ridiculous. There needs to be a full schedule, come on IGN!
|
Stop doing reruns. Having it run constantly doesn't mean it's good content. Quality over quanity. Though it's best if you combine both.
Soundproof the casting area, it's not like I'm there to listen to the "sounds of San Fran" mixtape. Although the casters do a wonderful job of masking it with jokes etc.

INCLUDE BETTER PLAYERS
aka Koreans lol
it gives the tournament a LOT more prestige as discussed by State of the game. oh hey idra won IPL 1 ...but eh... doesnt really matter b.c. not even close of the best were there.

I believe they have repeatedly said they are doing it in stages so they do it right. Season 1 was NA only. Season 2 is NA and EU. Season 3 is all regions

I disagree, not that I'm against seeing Koreans play. But I already have MLG, GSL, NASL, ICCUP.tv. I like having a predominantly NA/EU scene. It becomes especially stale if there is only a couple of Koreans in it and they just dominate everyone else. I like a little variety.
Yes, everyone needs to pick up their game to compete with Korean level. But the infrastructure is only beginning to show up outside of Korea. And even if every team had a house, practice 10hrs a day, etcetera, we're still probably 1-2yrs before matching them.

It's hard for me to follow IPL for some reason. I think I watched it this season for the first couple of days then lost track of it. When I do see it on, it seems like it's something totally different (IPL tv?) or a re-run. There's like no hype to it; like right now I don't know who's playing who and how far in the bracket the IPL is in. One day I saw incontrol versus isjecho (sp?) and I was confused because I was pretty sure neither was in the IPL. So I figured out it was something totally different from the league itself but with a similar name I guess; it ended up being a boring game and threw me off watching IPL stuff all together. My suggestion is to give it a different name.
Then the hype of the IPL seems very low. With the NASL, I was only hyped during the finals but during the season the hype wasn't really needed. You can always tune in when you want and get to see good players like the koreans playing when you have time. Since the IPL doesn't have the skill pool of other tournaments, they need some sort of hype. I'm just not feeling it, no one really talks a lot about IPL. None of the podcasts and shows like State of the Game ever mentions it at all. You lose a lot of excitement also when everything done in the IPL is NOT LIVE. As far as I know, the tournament has been finished already? It's missing some sort of x-factor to make fans excited about this league. If you know the talent pool is not as good, there has to be something different that makes the league stand out. To me it's sort of like watching a youtube cast but with higher production.

Well, your view may be in the minority. I saw code A qualifiers pull in equal number of viewers as IPL. You start to forget the IPL has a large prize pool and the qualifiers are just a qualifier. Even if people don't enjoy Korean domination, allowing them in the tournament allows fans to see how foreigners compare and creates a situation where fans are excited to see a goliath versus david situation.

Well, here's the most basic schedule there is. We start our new content at the same time every day, and that's 00:00 GMT (+00:00). The re-broadcasts always begin at 16:30 GMT (+00:00).
- Monday: IPL TV
- Tuesday: IPL Team Arena
- Wednesday: IPL TV
- Thursday: IPL 2 Main Event
- Friday: IPL 2 Main Event
- Saturday: IPL 2 Main Event
- Sunday: IPL 2 Main Event
So, Monday and Wednesday are IPL TV. There are roughly two hours of new, live casts of viewer submitted and pro replays, before we begin airing content that you may have seen before either from previous IPL TV shows or IPL 2 Main Event games.
Tuesdays are IPL Team Arena, which is our winner's style king of the hill weekly team showmatch. Those games are cast live until they are completed, then re-aired content.
Thursday through Sunday, again starting at 00:00 GMT (+00:00), are main event games and the calendar has always been available at http://www.ign.com/ipl/starcraft2/calendar =)
Hope this clears things up!

It has been said already, but I will mention this again, because it's really easy to fix:
You HAVE to get yourselves listed in the "ON AIR" section and NOT in the "Live user streams". If this is only an issue for the EU restream I'm sorry, but that's when I notice it
I - as probably many - don't keep track of schedules and just visit TL to see what's up. So I've missed this many times because I just took a quick glimpse into the "ON AIR" section. I know, it's to a large extent my fault to not looking the event up, but getting the cast listed properly shouldn't be a big deal, no?

Yes, we're sorry for this yesterday, this was the only time the EU broadcast did not get its event properly listed, the rest of the time we've been under the On Air section.

Most of the feedback in the front page covered what I had in mind.
I would say I like the steam punk theme of the IPL as well as season 1's comic book style. Having a specific theme to the overlay and vids adds more character to the tournament, which I definitely appreciate. Compare that to the GSL which, despite their high budget, uses a nauseating "EXTREME!!" high octane design with atrocious rock ballad music which I absolutely despise. It really feels like your overlays are fun and slightly tongue in cheek, which provides a nice flavor compared to the all of other Tourneys which go for a super professional look and wind up feeling a bit sterile at times.
Web site design - It would have helped to make the Season 2 IPL site Steam punk themed like the game overlay in order to provide some visual cohesion. As of now the steam punk theme clashes with the IPL's modern style site design. Neither one's bad mind you, but the lack of a unified aesthetic theme hurts both.
Interviews - They're some of the better interviews I've seen. I like that you use guys who know the game to conduct interviews and I actually find hosting it in that bar/club locale to be pleasant and more laid back. Something about the atmosphere feels more natural than those awkward interviews in cushy chairs on a tv show style stage or the ones right after a player's finished a Best of set.
PS CatsPajamas has done a great job BUT he needs to ditch the chin puff. Chin puffs are foul nasty things, keep the facial hair trimmed short and neat.
|
I've found it hard to follow so far. Maybe put more info in the up coming events section. For example GSL has the matchups listed. I'd probably watch more if I knew beforehand who was playing without having to go out of my way to find out.
|
Here's what I think is bad about this tournament: - Too dragged out, why couldn't you broadcast it in 2 weeks or something? No need to drag it out, all the weird filler days are just confusing imo. - Why so much lag time? I know you want to have good production but a whole month is pretty much, all games even uses the same template so I can't imagine why 2 days or something wouldn't be enough :s Honestly I think it could have been live as well without major problems. - No Koreans. Seriously.
|
didn't realize this tournament had already progressed this far =.= definitely needs way more hype. seems pretty lackluster in terms of prestige. i see alot of outdated builds/talks, quite the turn off given the pace of the metagame shifts atm.
|
-Tournament is extremely dragged out For some viewers it's extremely intolerable to watch games you know happened several weeks ago, your trying to present it more like a 'sport' almost UFC like, well the truth is unlike sport fans, most gaming fans also PLAY the game and watch these matches to learn the metagame and not just be entertained, it's not exactly fun to watch players lose to strategies that have already been figured out.
-Some of the casting is borderline fake The casting is fairly top notch, but I cringe when I hear some of the IPL in house casters grossly exaggerate advantages just to claim a comeback when it really wasn't, turns me off.
-Very hard to follow Due to the length its hard to tell when certain matches are happening and what have already taken place because sometimes IPL tv is broadcasted right after the IPL happens and you don't know if your watching tournament matches or random replays even though its being broadcast under IPL Day X on the Teamliquid side bar.
-Live report threads not having updated results Sometimes the results arn't updated in the Live Report thread, I'm pretty sure its against the rules to open a Live Report thread if your not going to keep it updated. JOSHY!
Also the steampunk thing is atrocious but that's just an opinion
|
I think you're doing really well. My only real issues were virtually exactly the same issues Painuser brought up on the most recent Inside the Game. These are of course fundamental pillars of your tournament. I think you're doing really well though.
|
I just thought I'd jump in here and say congrats to you guys for doing an excellent job.
Seriously, the format and structure, level of professionalism and production value of the IPL is fantastic. People talk a lot about the NASL because it has a bigger prize pool, but I personally find the IPL much more compelling viewing, even though there are no Koreans.
Keep up the good work guys, this is what the future of Western esports should look like imo~
|
I thought this season was incredible. Unfortunately, I didn't really pay attention to it >><<. A silly request would be another hype post on TL for it just so I remember that it's going on again and who's playing. Also another small thing would be to list who's playing on the calendar when it is possible (also the casting pairs would be nice... I have to watching anything with Artosis). This is really minor and I could be solved by more work on my side. If you could though that would definitely push the event to the next level.
Great Job IPL team!
edit: I think illsick makes great points. It might be more that people didn't know to watch it than any sort of execution issue.
|
In the currently running Tastosis commentary of ThorZain vs Nerchio, the audio and possibly video stutter with annoying regularity. Turning me off big time.
I didn't see any stuttering before this though.
|
Thank you for addressing all of those issues Alex. That goes a long way toward building a lasting relationship with a finicky and demanding community.
My only complaints are certain casters on the IPL team but I know that is an entirely subjective thing. I'll keep those thoughts to myself.
|
Not sure if this happens all the time, but I was watching some of the live stream today- Round of 4 losers bracket- and there was no game sound. All that could be heard was the casters' voices. I like hearing the gun shots, units dying, etc, and it just made it sucky to watch. I don't tune in daily, but it was something I noticed today that really bugged me. I guess try to make sure you guys always have game sounds on. Also, try to keep the game sounds on a low-medium level... I've seen some casts (not from you guys) that have the game sounds being much louder than the casters, and it's a little bothersome.
