I can't believe how hard it is to access the VODs from the NASL site and they spoil the match if you go to the match page on the site. Really NASL? You think we want to know who wins before we watch the match?

Frankly, polls are a bad option. Take a hypothetical match between a popular foreigner and someone like oGsEnsnare. If a game in that series is won by the foreigner, 9/10 times, it'll be recommended.
In my LR threads, when there's a borderline case of when or when not to recommend a game, I make a poll. But in most cases, polls are a.) bulky and b.) biased.

Yeah, you even see a racial bias in the polls. No game where a race that is widely considered to be strong in a particular matchup wins is likely to be highly rated, while even a very one-sided game that goes the other way will be.
Having one person pick which games are worth watching is generally a better way to isolate individual games for people with limited time to watch VODs.

I have a question/complaint.
When I go to nasl.tv and head on over to the 'videos' section, I click on a match I want to watch, like KawaiiRice and Haypro, and the page reloads, but the video doesn't play. It's just the standard youtube looking video box and to the side I have the matchup description, but when I hit 'play' nothing happens. I'm able to watch from Justin.tv website though. (yes I've paid my subscription  )
any tips, or do I just need to go to Justin.tv?

I agree Sueco, Dreamhack and TSL imo have better production value and free, even GSL has great a production as it has only costs 15 dollars a season, 5 for the team league. 25 dollars seems a bit much for their first season. They should have it free or low cost early on to gain viewership, then ramp up prices for later seasons once all their bugs are worked out.

Zuckenberg tells them to gtfo and thus turns fbook into a massive phenomenon worth billions instead of the small change the money-men wanted.
Whoever is organizing the NASL didn't pay attention to that part.

GSL costs $10 and TSL is free, i wish I could watch some of these games, but the price is too high. We complained back when GSL wanted to charge $40 and they lowered it. I think NASL should consider the same thing for next season.

For real, what kind of organization doesn't take their business model from movies? Sueco, maybe you should contact them and give them some financial advice. It sounds like you really know what you're talking about and obviously they could use help from someone as astute as yourself.

What you guys hating on Swueco for? If you read between the lines like you should it makes perfect sense what he says. It's more important to start and keep the user experience as the most important part and then expand on it later when you already have been established and have support, you have made your customers dependent on your product. Than to balance it from the get go, cutting into the user experience and weakening your foundation and long term growth. That's what he was aiming at anyway and you see this everywhere, look at the spotify thread from yesterday, they are doing exactly what he's talking about.
You can disagree but don't take it out on his analogy with the movie. Albeit possibly harsh, it's not flawed, don't ad hominem.
And I will make a lot of use of the VOD thread, for some reason I just really enjoy using the forums and user compiled information. It works well and feels nice to use.

I'm not really so disappointed about not getting to watch the NASL. Trust me, there's quite enough free quality SC2 casting on the internet.
My disappointment is more about the NASL's limited scope in promoting e-sports. For example, the marketing firm I work for has just started out in a tough new market, and they know they simply won't be profitable for a good 5 years, they are prepared to spend that much capital to get a good thing started.
By contrast the NASL seems to be strangling itself before it's even gotten started. Perhaps they need capital and investors that are willing to bet, like Telia and Aftonbladet were willing to bet big on the DHI?

iNcontrol i think you are off base a little here. Most of us HAVE paid our $25 and want to watch the VODs, and it has not been easy. The entire reason this thread was made. If you want to compete with the big boys, that's fine and I truly don't care how much you charge. We know it takes money to get shit off the ground, no denying that, but we also expect just a little, tiny, iota of organization and professionalism when it comes to the VOD set up. Is that too much to ask?

You dont take into account the fact that there is a free stream of reality high quality that gives the viewer access to the content. Unlike the GomTV stream which is broadcast at very late times or early times for most americans and europeans it allows the casual veiwer to experience a game of starcraft. The vods are mainly there to satisfy the hard core audience who may not have the time to watch all games rather than the casual audience who may just want to tune in for one or to games without knowing the specifics of the players, maps and racial matchup.
\you bring up the example of investors bringing capital in order to break into the market however investors though they can bring benifits such as expierence and capital to the NASL however in exchange for this capital what sort of control will they ask for in exchange (it makes sense you would want to make sure that ur investment is being used in the correct manner) and due to the fairly new nature of e-sports in the west there could be barrieres to finding investors willing to contribute a substantial amount of money. As a casual SC2 fan, all I want to do is watch the highest/most recommended game.
I dont have the time to watch ~2hrs every night of mostly average games. There are usually one or two gems, but I could just go on SC2casts.com and find the highest rated game between pros and watch that in HD.
I dont have money as a student. Maybe make a low definition VOD version available for peeps to increase the awareness and get people to see the differential of NASL.

a person with over 350 posts on team liquid (a hardcore site) and can tell the difference between an average game and a indepth game does not describe a casul veiwer u my friend are a hardcore veiwer as you have an indepth understanding of the game itself. My casual veiwer I mean people thast are watching their first few games of sc2 and this i their ffirst expierence of E-sports.
Edit: getting sponsorship for new ventures is quite difficult due to the inability to provide statistics on a number of things e.g. veiwer numbers thus a company is more likely to sponser something that has an established history and audience, and I would expec that the NASL has been actrive in the getting of sponsorship to assume anything else is merely stupidity.
Edit 2: I disagree there has been a relitively high level of production value granted that has been a few hiccups but does anyone remember gsl season 1 and all the issues that existed then.
Finally good things come to those that wait and have patience I predict that over time the issues will be fixed as long as webring them to the attention of the organisers ia prompt and constructive manner.

I think the second point got misconstrued. Watch the IGN interviews of the players and you will see what I mean. Smoke/professional interviews. I am not bashing on NASL, just showing them what is being done by an alternative.
Btw, I havnt played SC2 in over 5 months because I have no time, although I appreciate the complexities of the game. I watch SC2 games when I can because they are entertaining. My view should count in this regard because I am potentially the target audience if NASL needs if it is to go mainstream. If I am working in hospitals till late, then when can I watch it- I can just go on Sc2casts and choose from any number of youtube casters broadcasting in HD the highest rated game- Time saved. NASL alternative- spend evening watching sets between pros, but may be boring games.

Can you you see how the current arrangement it is less than optimal off the casual viewer?
This isnt about "growing the scene". Its about how NASL can get tonnes more viewers and this ultimately will benefit their bottom line because of increased footfall (viewership) in the long term. Its great if the prize money is big, but the other stuff sadly is way more important in terms of viewer experience
Just to reference, Edward Starcraft said IGN PL main differential to NASL is that it is focusing on VODs for convenience. I aint no IGN fanboy or NASL hater. I am seeing objective differences and stating how it affects me + possibly many others and then offering solutions

You dont take into account the fact that there is a free stream of reality high quality that gives the viewer access to the content. Unlike the GomTV stream which is broadcast at very late times or early times for most americans and europeans it allows the casual veiwer to experience a game of starcraft. The vods are mainly there to satisfy the hard core audience who may not have the time to watch all games rather than the casual audience who may just want to tune in for one or to games without knowing the specifics of the players, maps and racial matchup. \you bring up the example of investors bringing capital in order to break into the market however investors though they can bring benifits such as expierence and capital to the NASL however in exchange for this capital what sort of control will they ask for in exchange (it makes sense you would want to make sure that ur investment is being used in the correct manner) and due to the fairly new nature of e-sports in the west there could be barrieres to finding investors willing to contribute a substantial amount of money. Indeed I would think that this option has been explored in depth by those that are involved in the NASL As a casual SC2 fan, all I want to do is watch the highest/most recommended game. I dont have the time to watch ~2hrs every night of mostly average games. There are usually one or two gems, but I could just go on SC2casts.com and find the highest rated game between pros and watch that in HD. I dont have money as a student. the main issue is that there is a large amount of cost involved in holding a tournament such as this and there is a genuine need to gert revenue in order to fund it. Though you may be correct in saying that it would be more convienent to have set up for casual veiwers as youii have propsoed it would result in a decreased overall revenue leading to decreased tournament viability in the short term even though it may lead to a greater expansion of the overall scene in the west it could result in the tournament being not continued past the third season (as i understand it). Having had this debate many times in the past both on these forums and in rl the solution to the issue is to have sponsorship so that over time the cost can be reduced or indeed itt can be provided for free. However until this occurs there is the need by the organsors of the tournament to cover costs via a subscription fee.

Sorry to interrupt the complaining, I just came here to thank motbob for the awesome thread (as usual); I'm definitely going to bookmark this for future reference when I can't catch NASL live (which is fairly often). Much appreciated, motbob. It's also highly helpful that you added the recommended games from the LR threads.
I didn't expect to see so much whine in such a harmless and useful thread. How strange. Anyway, I guess I'll fuel the rage fire and add my two cents: I'm fine with how everything's been going with NASL. I'm a[n extremely] poor graduate student and I was happy to pay the $25 for the season pass. It's basically trading a single night's expense downtown for the ability to check out awesome SC2 games several nights a week for a long while.

I think it is quite sad that we have a need for a thread like this at all. Alot of the VODS are not even lsited on the NASl site at all. Thanks for this though, it is very well made and I appreciate it alot. Makes watching the NASL (Which they have not emailed me back about my refund >:\) alot less headache inducing.

I think it's such a dumb move from a business perspective, especially since NASL has no previous backing. GSL has been running for quite some time, so people trust it and it has validity--trying to monetize (especially at $25 for a season) is dumb at this stage of NASL.

A question to those who can access the VODs - are they of better quality than the stream? I've only watched the 480p free stream and it's quite laggy and the sound quality of the commentators so-so. Are the VODs better?

oh stfu GSL season one had a terrible time adjusting to give nasl time stop being the little prick that you are. yes there are Stream issues but that gets resolved with MONEY and TIME only one of which have you given and now are taking

For anyone who was on the edge about whether or not to buy the package, all I can say is that I completely am behind my purchase. At first I was a little miffed because they vods took forever to load but now it is the exact opposite. Props to Justin TV and NASL for fixing this issue.
The HD vods are so freaking sick, guys just do it! Gretorp and Incontrol are so sick as a casting duo also man they have gotten so much better. Give it another chance if you were one of the initial haters.

Try buffering for like 1/2 hour then watching but yeah this is spoiling NASL for me too. They need lower quality VODs as an option.

justin tv limits it to 200- 300 kbs.so you need to buffer +1/3 time.if you have a download mannager like internet download mannager (idm) which can dl flv files.you will download it with full speed.

i think that is the case, I am in France and have to load the vods for extremely long (up to an hour) before beeing able to watch it. However, i never have any problem with 1080p on youtube or HQ on gom.tv...

Yeah I watch NASL 95% through vods... it'd be a shame if there's no better way to view the vods than to search them out manually. I'm paying them for a reason.

Any reason nasl.tv/videos hasn't updated with the games from this weekend? -_- That's kind've annoying to have to head to an auxiliary site to watch content I'm paying for.

I have been able to watch the first two weeks of the games but recently I always get the error "Sorry, this broadcast is no longer available on justin.tv. Check out the channel". I then went to the channel but still can't watch anything. Anyone having the same problem? Seems like my $25.00 will be a waste if I can't watch the vods

Trust me, being a paying customer of the NASL means shit. I am a paying customer too but they've already got my money and there are no refunds so you can't do shit besides abstaining from the same mistake next time, although chances are the shit from this season will have already blown over by then.

No explanation given, no genuinely expressed apology, not even in the Live Report thread where the organisers were happily posting in (and likely moderating for adverse comments), just a simple: "Take it up the ass or leave it.")
