Hello friends, Ed from IGN here! As some of you may know, this past weekend a group of select NA players visited our offices at IGN in downtown San Francisco for some fun, fun and more fun! About what, I can't say yet, but we will be announcing what we have in store for the fans on April 4th! In the meantime, please enjoy these sneak peeks at what we were up to this weekend, and you might see some of your favorite players/figures in the industry!

To see all the pictures, check out my blog on myIGN here !

I see starcraft, incontrol, and cute girls. This announcement will be good.

My prediction: incontrol and other manly men of sorts were invited to see if the effects of having cute girls present more often in tournaments would increase viewership. This being said, it was successful and true. The NASL will be host so several bikini models helping the players into thier booths during the finals and announcing their names and what not during the regular season.

or it could just be another tournament or sponsorship or something, but id like to hope for the first one.

It may increase viewership, but cute girls around Starcraft 2 pro-gamers from my experience usually generate awkwardness. Anyone remember IEM when MorroW and IdrA came out onto the stage with Razer girls? To me it just looked weird and awkward haha.

Jessica Chobot is the one interviewing them I think, and she works at IGN. Yes, she's very hot, but I doubt she was there for any test on good looking girls and their effect on gaming. Most likely they were there to discuss the NASL and some other details, as this tournament is a pretty big deal for the gaming community as a whole.

PainUser, Select, Incontrol

Then a couple guys that make you worried as to why anyone would be involving them with anything remotely important.

I don't actually recognize Chobot in any of these pictures. I must say that some sort of announcement like this in cooperation with IGN certainly seems uncharacteristic, but good nonetheless. I think their willingness to expose the growing Starcraft II professional scene to IGN's more mainstream audience will certainly generate some buzz in varying demographics.

The girl in the chair interviewing two of them seems to be her, especially since she seems to be the main interviewer for IGN.

I thought IGN did game reviews or something and I kind of had enough of announcing announcements after the whole nasl thing and I'm pretty much all out of air so I won't be holding my breath for this. Sorry for negative feedback, I try to only be positive but announcements for announcements shouldn't even be called announcements or be made in general just to squeeze a little bit of extra hype out of it. It just makes you seem kind of desperate and it is annoying. Besides if you really want to get "pre-information" out there just "leak" it to a news site and it'll find it's way to the tl forums and people will actually think it's cool and mysterious instead of thinking of IGN as greedy and lazy.
Everything is self-evident

Is this referencing the HDH Invitational 2 or something? That would be quite interesting if IGN brought that sort of mainstream exposure to the games.

Considering IGN is sponsoring The HD World Tournament, I'm assuming that there's some kind of connection between that event and IGN's secret plans.

Similar to the Jinro/Idra Showmatch to announce the NASL.

That's possible. I'm just hoping that their announcement is going to be a way of distributing or advertising current content rather than creating more. There will already be far, far more SC2 than anyone could consume on a regular schedule this year. Yet another individual league would seem superfluous.

Very interested to see what this is, hope it's awesome! Regardless, IGN is a great site and this could really bring some new people into Starcraft. Gotta love IGN for putting an effort into promoting E-sports, which i think is something gaming websites really don't do enough of.

At the end of the video Chobot says she will be working on a secret project for IGN. Coincidence?

It took until page 3 for some to suspect that. IGN might also be helping produce/partnership. Or IGN was doing a news piece/launch section on NASL and is maybe opening an Esports section.

Also, did IGN just hire Root's manager?

http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/fclnz/i_am_the_managing_director_for_root_gaming_ama/

So it's ROOTedward. Then look at the top of the post here:

http://www.ign.com/blogs/ignedward/2011/03/19/igns-announcement-of-an-announcement/

"Player Card" "Level 4" "rootedward" "IGNedward Member Since: March 12, 2011"

So, yeah, something "big" is going on, in addition to Incontrol being in San Francisco.

It might just be IGN becoming an exclusive reporter of NASL news or something along those lines, and having Chobot as the main correspondent for them. The type of thing you see with ESPN etc.

I don't know what chobot would do as a main correspondent. It's not like mlg where you can wander the floor interviewing players. It's all done online. She going to interview everyone on skype?

If IGN is going the be one of the primary flag carriers of the NASL or even contributor to the NASL, I think very good things are on the horizon for global e-sports. Spread the hype!

Is this referencing the HDH Invitational 2 or something? That would be quite interesting if IGN brought that sort of mainstream exposure to the games.

No, HD is running a tournament on his own.

Considering IGN is sponsoring The HD World Tournament, I'm assuming that there's some kind of connection between that event and IGN's secret plans.

Similar to the Jinro/Idra Showmatch to announce the NASL.

HD tournament is supposed to be finished before the end of March, so it seems more likely that IGN will be an advertised sponsor for NASL

No clue, she already seems to be interviewing some of the people apart of the Starcraft 2 community and who knows? I have no idea what they plan to do, but this whole thing corresponding to her special project and her obviously being in those pictures suggests something. Maybe she'll show up when they have an actual location for the tournament. I mean look at the GSL, they have a good looking and probably relatively articulate woman (don't speak Korean) as the face of their broadcasting team for a reason. Even though I doubt Chobot keeps in touch with SC2 and would become a full time commentator. Having her do interviews (however they manage it) and be at the actual "lan" event wouldn't be a bad idea at all. She's good at interviewing, is good looking, articulate and obviously enjoys gaming.

Or it could be something with NASL. But why would guys from ROOT, HD, Painuser and others be there for that?

It could help explain why Geoff and company were so hesitant to answer the question "where did the money come from". Perhaps the $400,000 is spread across a number of contributors who will be revealed over time. IGN and Blizzard would definitely help make such a grand initial sum for the NASL understandable. A bit less shocking then a very confident investment from an entrepreneur.

Since ed got a blog on IGN as part of their staff, I'm pretty sure IGN is setting up an eSports sub-department (like they have for Gaming, Movies etc.).

Chances are that HD's tournament is simply being cast at IGN (replays) and will be posted on their website, since IGN is a main stream gaming site. If you guys checked IGN lately, they have also posted a couple of SC2 pro-tips videos, which is why assume some of the players are there for.

They have been posting content related to Starcraft2 for a while though. Usually games get updates if the developer pumps out new content or something, but its kind of rare for them to keep up with a game in terms of community development (playstyles) or mentalities of losing or something like that. Probably nothing to look into too much but, certainly something to consider.

I don't think it's a coincident that last week they released four SC2 101 video and HD's tournament gets announced on the same date and now we have this, what appears to be Catz, iNcontroL, TT1, Axslav, PainUser, Select (All invited to the HD:WT) and HD himself at the IGN's office. But whatever. We'll just have to wait and see or speculate. But I think matches are just going to be cast there and VODs on the IGN site.

With the interview setup and the shots of the players playing SC (good B-roll footage), it looks like there's going to be some kind of feature on SC2 progamers. They'll likely use this in promotion of something bigger.

The timing might suggest something with NASL, but you'd think they'd announce something like that sooner, unless they're just a sponsor.

This seems pretty likely since all the players in the photos are playing in HD's tournament, and he said the games would likely be played this past week. The only thing that doesn't fit is that HD said the games would be on his Youtube channel, but that's fairly minor.

NASL begins on april 5th right? So this announcement of an announcement that is getting announced on april 4th is likely close related to NASL. That iNcontrol is in the pictures point to that as well.

This is probally not the biggest news but more likely how IGN is getting involved with NASL somehow.

Ooh IGN representatives on TeamLiquid

It is certainly very nice that IGN are picking up StarCraft 2 but I'd expect anyone on TeamLiquid would say that. April is fast approaching and iNcontroL and Gretorp seem to have become better at casting since the Clash of the Titans a few weeks ago if the GCPL final is anything to go by.

I hope your picking up tips from GSL as they have it pretty much set (technical issues aside) for presentation, I realise the tournament is online (well, technically so is the GSL but you get the drift) but things still apply such as player interviews, graphics, observer, music, casting quality, bracket updates, VOD's access, stream access, well pretty much everything is top notch.

P.S. Speak to your game reviewer division and stop rating mediocre games at 8 or so, the average of 1-10 is 5, rate more average games a 5 (like Dragon Age 2).

The announcement IS NOT that they are sponsoring NASL. IGN is doing their own thing.

Also, some funny pictures.

Not another one of these. If you don't want to share information just stay away. Im soo done with these things. The next guys to announce an announcement should just post it on battlenet forums or something.

It wouldn't be an announcement of an announcement without Geoff somehow involved. But I'm still excited nonetheless ^^.

Yeah seriously since incontroll hyped the shit out of his announcement everyone announces announcements. From korean starcraft teams to IGN.....

Where are the good old days where people just came out and announced what they wanted to announce without teasing you all the time.( Well whatever its still great to see big names getting involved in the scene.

I have to admit, I'm a little tired of the announcement of an announcement as well. I can understand the desire to hype something, but when does it stop?

I really feel like this is bordering on the edge of negative publicity, personally.

Hey all,

Thanks for all of your comments about our upcoming announcement. We did not do this to just lead people on and be a tease - we only did this because of the amount of people who came to IGN this past weekend. News and pictures regarding this was going to get out sooner or later so we just wanted to let you know from an official source that something very cool is coming down the pipe.

Thanks!

Probably promotion for the HD World Tournament since it's sponsored by IGN.

Would make sense to use IGN's popularity in the gaming scene to promote their tournament.

Would not surprise me if they used the opportunity to conduct some interviews and create a sort of "special report" article, while the guys were there.

Lol apparently it's a IGN sponsored Pro-League wow... and that clock is set to go off midnight on April 5th? Which would make it a day late lol.

IGN to announce the IPL (IGN Pro League)! This is going to be the epitome of NA sc2 tournaments, as long as they have good casters (not HD as seen in the pictures) because I trust their production will be beyond good and will have learned from past tournaments' mistakes.

Countdown timer isn't accurate, because it seems to be based on the computer's clock and not a central source. Does anyone know what timezone IGN is in and could find out by that?

I'd take a random stab and go PST, so it's 7:41am over there right now. Those west coasters like doing things anywhere between 1000-1200

Indian Premier League, It's the world's biggest non-nation based cricket league, at least in terms of salaries and junk. It is pretty huge, would be not dissimilar to calling this competition NASL (North American Soccer League?)

Looks like it might be a series of showmatches or an invitational tournament with AWESOME production values and advertised on IGN, which is a huge deal considering how busy the site is.

I can't wait to see what comes out in the next hours.
