There's a lot of components to this season three announcement. So I'm going to break it down in to sections to make it easier for everyone to read and understand.
The Leagues + Show Spoiler +This season we will have two leagues. SGL-One and SGL-Two. We are opening up a proleague and an amateur league to bring a whole new level to the Starcraft Gaming League. SGL-One will have GnR as the head admin still, but SGL-Two will be run by SGL]BlueCow, who I'm sure a lot of you know from the first season as one of the most active and consistent match administrators. We will also be expanding SGL-One to 10 teams, and opening SGL-Two as a 10 team division as well. This not only brings more competition to the league, it increases the community and support the fans will have for us. This will give us 10 clan wars a week which our current administrative staff can certainly handle. Here at the SGL, we give the best service and administration offered in SC2, we have admins present at every clan war and treat each and every player or fan with respect. We are happy to give more teams the chance to be a part of the organization and we want everyone to be able to enjoy it. The prizes for the league will be announced at a later date. However what I can tell you, is that there will be a cash prize for SGL-One and SGL-Two will be purely for the experience, and may have a product prize depending on what our sponsors can provide for us.
The Qualifiers + Show Spoiler +The SGL Qualifiers will begin April 3rd for both leagues. Each league will have a different qualifier and different teams. We encourage teams to choose one league they would like to participate in, SGL-One will be a VERY difficult qualifier and league, if you are not one of the best teams outside Korea, I don't suggest applying for that league unless you're purely interested in competing for money, rather than competing for a team experience. You may only choose one league to play in, so this decision is crucial in your teams participation.
SGL-One Qualifier + Show Spoiler +The SGL-One qualifier will accept 16 teams to participate. The 5th and 6th place team from SGL Season 2 will receive the 1st and 2nd seeds of the qualifier. The participants will be playing in a double elimination bracket with only 6 teams moving on to the regular season. These matches will be assigned and cast by the SGL Media Team. There will be teams from all over the world playing, and time zones will be taken in to account while scheduling. One major thing about this format, is that you have the ability to pre-arrange matches for the players who cannot make it at the assigned time and have it casted by the replay. With this involved, there is no excuse for not having your match completed each week. The application for this league will be listed near the end of the post.
SGL-Two Qualifier + Show Spoiler +The SGL-Two qualifier will accept 20 teams to participate. The 7th and 8th place team from SGL-One will receive the 1st and 2nd seeds in the qualifiers. Unlike SGL-One, we will be holding a group stage qualifier with 5 groups of 4 teams each. We will be taking the top two teams from each group, and bringing them to compete in the regular season. I would love to be able to accept more teams, however we don't want to put too much on our plate and ruin the experience for everyone. This will be a basic round-robin group stage competition, with all of your playtimes also being assigned by SGL]BlueCow. The league will be played under the same format as SGL-One, with the ability to pre-arrange your match times. The difference here though, is that you will not have a caster assigned to your clan war, these will be casted by any team casters, or any caster who would like to stream the selected clan war. The match admin at the clan war however has the final say of who is going to be casting the clan war and there will be only one stream per clan war unless it's of different languages. The application for this league will be listed near the end of the post.
The Format + Show Spoiler +We found a lot of issues with the new format that we're using. Some love it, some hate it, some don't care either way. Unfortunately we have to change our format from last season and I believe it's all for the better! The new format will be fun and exciting and will spice things up. We want to be original and unique, and we have found ourselves a way to stand out from the rest. With the SGL format, we are increasing the strategy factor in the game. We will be having a format similar to what the GCPL uses, however we're adding significance to certain series. With our format, there will be two BO3 series, and two BO1 series. The BO3s will count for two points each, and the BO1s will count for one point each. This obviously makes the BO3s a big deal in winning the clan war. We will have the standard starting map and veto system, and you will assign four different players to the four series. If there is a tie, you will continue in to an ACE match. This will be a BO3 where you can choose any player on your roster to score the winning point for your team. Here are a few scenarios of a sample clan war: Scenario 1: + Show Spoiler + Team A vs. Team B: 1 vs. 5 -- Starting map 1(Bo3) 2 vs. 6 -- Starting map 2(Bo3) 3 vs. 7 - Bo1 Map 1 4 vs. 8 - Bo1 Map 2

1 [2-0] 5 2 [0-2] 6 3 [1-0] 7 4 [0-1] 8

Score: 4-3

1 [1-2] 5 2 [1-2] 6 3 [1-0] 7 4 [1-0] 8
Score: 2-4 Hopefully this helps everyone to further understand the format. If you have any questions or comments about how anything with the format will go, email us at SGLeague@sgleague.net or comment on the thread. We will be more than happy to answer your questions and discuss what we're doing here at the SGL.

It's not limited to NA, however you are required to have four NA accounts, something that has changed from last season. If you are from EU we will be scheduling times suitable for you players but you are expected to play on the NA server

Hello!
For those who weren't there for season 1 and 2, can you explain to us what this is all about please?
After reading that wall of text, I'm still confused.
|
We're a SC2 clan league. You can find more information about us at www.SGLeague.net.
The SGL is a league where you can face other teams in the world in a competitive scenery. Not sure what else there is to it
|
MYM signing up
|
Sounds great! I'll look out for your application
|
I am sure vVv will sign up.. hopefully we don't get screwed over again by having the qualifiers be played during the week of christmas lmao...
|
We are nowhere near christmas so there's nothing to worry about :D
|
Is the team size limited to 4 players, or can you sign up with more than 4 and just choose your 4 at each clan war?
|
You can have a maximum of 15 players on your roster. You just need to have four different players playing the clan war. You can choose four out of how many players you have on your roster to play in the selected clan war
|
Wish I had a team to play with...
|
|
new format ought to be interesting

Certainly hope so! It's received positive feedback so far I'm hoping it all runs smoothly

How are you setting up the qualifiers. I know in some leagues the qualifiers end up shafting some teams. Are you just randomly putting teams against each other or is there a method to how you will seed them.
|
On March 01 2011 01:04 p34nUt wrote: Is the team size limited to 4 players, or can you sign up with more than 4 and just choose your 4 at each clan war?
You submit a roster with a good 8-15 players depending on your clan size. Then you submit a lineup for each clan war of 4 players. Sometimes you might be able to sub a player depending on the rules of the league. So you choose your 4 players about 30 minutes before the clan war.
|
The new format is not that interesting at all, lols. So the 2 best players you have get put on bo3's and the 2 not as good get put on bo1's no strategic thought what so ever.
|

We will be seeding them and putting them in to the groups based on seeding. I predict we will have to shaft some of the teams that apply which is unfortunate but if we gave everyone a chance things would take way too long, unfortunately it is a competition
|
Yeah im not fully sure if i understand why 2 players get bo3 while the other 2 get bo1. Also for the bo3, each map should be a point, not just the winner of a bo3 gets 2 pts. Thats my opinion. never really seen rules like this before.
|

That's exactly the point, it's brand new and we're going to see how it goes. We had originally had each map count but we found more flaws in the system that way. After considering everything with the format we feel the way we're running it now is the safest and most stable way possible. The point of the 2 bo3s/bo1s is to give the bo3s more significance, which will hopefully pit the best players against eachother which will make more fun and entertainment for the viewers. We appreciate the feedback though, it's just already been considered :D

xD did not prove very useful
|
Well the point is...if you're facing a strong team...you may not put your best on the bo3...might consider using them on the bo1's. also you have to balance out map choice with strength. otherwise, you can argue theres no real strategy in a random 5 bo3's.

An updated list of teams will come within the next few days!

Can any team sign up ? I want to know if this is just for pro teams like root or vT or those big teams, im aiming to sign for the sgl# 2 since MG isnt a pro team. Thanks for the info in advance.
|
Yep any team with 4 NA accounts! As long as you can play week by week on the american server feel free to sign your team up. Be sure to have a convincing application though if your team isn't very accomplished, this might be necessary even for SGL-Two.

|
No problem, I hope to see your application soon :D

Someone's jealous that their league has a smaller prize pool and no sponsors. Seriously, that's incredibly unprofessional coming from a league organizer.
If you want any team to play in the SCL in the future I'd suggest you manner up
|
Lols, yes majorly jealous. Didnt no I couldnt voice my opinon, they say there new format makes it more interesting etc etc, I disagree.

If you're going to say something that negative, it should typically come with something that you would like to see change rather than just bashing an idea people came up with. If you don't have anything meaningful to provide to the thread, no point in replying
|
Keep those applications coming. And incase you didn't read the fine print. Be sure you specify which division you will be applying for. Can not send it in for both, and we encourage only very strong teams to apply for SGL-One!
|
Question,
My team xi - elevengaming will attempt to apply for SGL One. Keep in mind that our number 1 goal is to compete in the league whether be SGL One or Two. What if we fail in the SGL One qualifiers, do we automatically get placed into SQL Two? We have beat and played some very good/competitive clan wars vs current SGL teams, so we want to take the shot at SGL One.
Thanks for any information.
EDIT: I guess after reviewing the info, we are just going to apply for SGL Two to be safe. Thanks!

To answer your question regardless, we encourage teams to only apply for SGL-One if they're interested in prize money only. If you are not a top tier team capable of beating each and every top team out there, I suggest you apply for SGL-Two if interested.
|
When will the prize pool be announced? That will factor into Fnatic's decision whether or not to participate.
|
The prize pool will be announced in a few weeks, one thing I can say is that it will be announced before the application period is over so you will be able to make the decision in time to apply
|
MG applied but we haven't receive any notification, can i be inform about it. Thanks in advance.
|
im pretty sure we'll publish a list of correctly applied teams a little bit closer to the end of the application period, but with enough time for you to see it and respond appropriately.

This will be played on the NA server for both leagues. for the qualifiers you need to have atleast 4 US accounts and for the regular season you need a unique account for each player

Where is the updated list of applied teams? (Sorry if I'm missing it, I checked here + the SGL forums)

I would like to make a comment, and I do want to say elevengaming and I appreciate the opportunity to have a chance to play in your league. I just don't like how these qualifiers are being divided.
Basically you're going to have 4 or 5, maybe even more teams that get dropped from the SGL One qualifiers. Then might be much better than 90% of the SGL Two teams. So now they just aren't in any division.
I think you should set it up so that its one big qualifier. And have it so the top 6 teams or whatever in the qualifier are in SGL ONE, then the next 8 in that rankings are automatically SGL TWO. This way you have the top 16 teams but just in 2 divisions.
That's just how I envision it. I just feel that teams on the bubble such as my team could really miss out here.

Filling out the app, hope this is as good as people are saying
(Gotta give a thumbs up to Nizzy's comments there)
And also, have you considered using z33k to host these qualifiers?

We have already considered this option. this would result in a very very long qualifier which we don't want. We want the teams in SGL-One to have a double elimination bracket since teh teams are predicted to be among the same skill level, which is how it is turning out to be. We understand that we may have to shut out a few teams, and the fact that you can only apply for one league might be disappointing. Any team can be considered for SGL-One they just need the achievements to back themselves up and be accepted. SGL-Two is for teams who want the experience of playing in the SGL, or in a team league at all.
As for elevengaming's concern, all I can say as of this moment is that we have a solution to this problem. However to prevent exploitation of the system I don't want to release it to the public

KoDo, thanks for the quick response.
The issue in question on xi's hand here is that of all the applied teams in SGL TWO at the moment we already play 90% of those teams in NGP league + ESGL. Also, no disrespect to those teams some are very talented but they just aren't good competition (consistently) for our A team players.
So in that sense a 3rd league of playing the same "tier" of skilled clans doesn't really benefit us. It does for half our players, but we need a clan league to challenge our top tier players. I'm not saying we wouldn't want to do it play in SGL TWO at all. If thats our only option we might not be pleased but we will still like to compete. However we have shown in multiple clan wars that we can take games and even win wars versus some of the top teams in the CURRENT SGL ONE, and the SGL ONE APPLIED teams.
I don't think you should worry if the qualifiers are long. What is the downside to that? You end up with arguably the best 16 teams.
Either way thanks for listening to my comment and responding.
-Nizzy
EDIT:
Once again please don't think i'm trying to BM you guys or just trying to piss you off because I can assure you I'm not.
Here's my plea:
1. Empire Gaming(Empire) 2. Team eSuba(eSuba)
Current teams that have applied for SGL-One: 3. vT Gaming(vT) 4. Meet Your Makers(MYM) 5. Against All Authority(aAa) 6. Regret eSports(REGret) 7. Reqiuem eSports(REQ) 8. Vision, Valor, Victory(vVv) 9. Vile Gaming(Vile) 10. Praetoriani(Prae)
Add elevengaming to that. +ONE, ROOT, Fnatic, EG. + 1 more team and that is 16 teams.
I hate to say it but you guys are practically going to have SGL ONE and SGL THREE. Because these 8 middle teams are getting, well, vanished? And once again no disrespect to the current SGL TWO applied teams but these remaining 8 are probably the next best 8, give or take a few.
I can assure you this isn't us wanting money, its honestly for our A-team players to get better competition.
If you get a total of 32 teams that apply, a 2-3 week qualifer is all you need. Remember you don't need to play this qualifer to the last 2 teams, only until theres 14 spots filled. So it might only take 2 weeks.
Okay I promise I will shut up now my point has been made. Thx again KoDo.

I appreciate the feedback, however the application is still open and we are expecting more applications for SGL-One as well as SGL-Two. The season is already going to be long enough so we feel making a bigger qualifier will turn away a few teams. After looking through all the options, this was the plan we decided on and we still feel that it's the best option.
As for the SGL-Three comment, the skill level in SGL-Two is not of great importance to us, we want the teams who play in that to have fun, and enjoy the game. We aren't looking for more attention frmo the second league, we're looking for teams to get experience and practice.

just a quick question about format. what are the benefits of having 2 bo1's? is it for time constraints?

It wouldn't take as long as 4 BO3s, on top of that it adds the strategy factor to the clan wars which will make it more interesting.
|
i think it takes away from strategy. it's like 2 bo3's and then a couple of ladder games. yeah it's different i'll give you that but i wouldn't call it strategy.
