Hey ya'll. I've decided to gather an interview 'package' for NEXGenius since some of you were confused why he was so hated in the korean community and thought these were pretty interesting. I don't think these were translated on TL, and I have Tuesdays off, so here it goes. Bolded his questionable statements haha.
NEXGenius has qualified for the GSL two seasons in a row.
Q. Your feelings on qualifying for the GSL twice in a row? A. I’ve been nervous until yesterday, but I realized that skill doesn’t disappear after playing today’s matches.
Q. Last season, you were eliminated in a disappointing fashion. A. Be it strategy or management, a loss is a loss. I don’t blame myself for losing, I even got a nickname for being bunker rushed twice.
Q. How did you deal with the disappointment? A. I felt better after qualifying for Blizzcon.
Q. Your expectations for this season? A. My goal is always to win the whole thing. However, I got knocked out in the Ro64 after saying that I wanted to win, so rather than to guarantee that I will win, I’ll just do my best this time.
Q. Due to Blizzcon, your GSL schedule has been very tight packed. A. If I advance to Ro32, I have to play my match right after I arrive back in Korea. If I overcome that, I think I can do well.
Q. You’re about to play games in North America, how do you feel? A. I’m very honoured. Foreigners are known to play games freely, but I think that Koreans are still better gamers. I’m expecting the Blizzcon main events to be a lot easier than the qualifiers.
Q. Who do you want to play in GSL? A. If I win against NaDa or BoxeR, I’ll be sure to get flamed. So I want to avoid those two. I would like anyone that is not zerg, because I’m not too confident in that match-up.
Q. You’re being considered one of the top protosses. A. People compare me a lot with sSKS, but since he didn’t qualify this time, I think I’m the top protoss (laughs).
Q. Any comments? A. I hope many NEX teammates can make it through qualifiers.
NEXGenius, ‘I still think I’m a favourite in this tournament’.
NEXGenius quickly defeated rainfOu with a score of 2:0 to advance to the Ro32.
Q. Your feelings on advancing to Ro32? A. I didn’t play like how I practiced, but I’m glad that I won.
Q. Were you reminded of your Ro64 exit from last season? A. Last time, I didn’t practice as much due to overconfidence, but I’ve learned my lesson and practiced hard.
Q. Last season, you were considered a favourite to win, but lost. A. I still think I’m a favourite in this tournament. I will clearly show how well I can play.
Q. Wasn’t it a big blow to lose 4 zealots in the first set? A. It was ok, because he made just as many zerglings. When he attacked me with roaches, I think I could lose, but I reacted well.
Q. After the recent patch, more zergs started using roaches offensively. A. You can defend against roaches with FF placed further away from you. Stalkers have longer range, so it’s not especially hard to defend.
Q. There were no protosses in the Ro4 from last season. A. I was knocked out way too early. I thought sSKS would advance, but he was surprisingly knocked out as well. This time, you can think that there is already one protoss in the Ro4 (me). I hope more than 2 protosses can make it though.
Q. People consider protoss to be a weak race. A. After the recent patch, protoss did become a lot weaker. However, I’ll show everyone that it’s still a good race with my play.
Q. There are discussions on who the top protoss is between you and oGsMC. A. The top protoss is definitely sSKS, but oGsMC has been improving. I hope we can all do well.
Q. You will soon leave to North America for Blizzcon. A. I have huge expectations, and I want to win, even though it is my first time playing overseas.
Q. Are you close with MakaPrime, who will be going with you to Blizzcon? A. Not sure about closeness, but we do talk a lot.
Q. Recently, Zenith and NEX merged into ZeNEX. A. Now we have the most players qualified into this GSL. There are more decent players, which is good for practice.
Q. Who do you consider to be the rival of this season? A. I don’t consider NaDa or BoxeR to be my rival, but I’m scared of them because if I win, I will be flamed. Since I practiced a lot, I’m not particularly concerned about a specific player.
Q. Your goal at the moment? A. I have come up with new builds, which I was able to hide in the Ro64. I want to show off these builds in the tournament. I think last season was a punishment for not practicing.
Q. Any comments? A. Thanks to IMLosirA, Leenock and NEXSikari for practicing, I’ll be sure to buy them a present if I win.
NEXGenius, ‘Protoss can trust me and just follow me along’.
Blizzcon winner NEXGenius defeated ‘Flame Terran’ Sync with a score of 2:0 to advance to Ro16.
Q. Your feelings on advancing to the Ro16 with a sweep? A. Like I said last time, you can count on me being in the Ro4 (laughs). There are very few protosses left, but you can trust me and follow me along, so don’t worry.
Q. What has changed after winning the Blizzcon? A. Friends and family have treated me differently, so I’m proud about that. Not sure about Korea, but I’ve gained many foreigner fans.
Q. Were you worried about fatigue or lack of practice? A. I fell asleep right after arriving in Korea, but only slept for 2 hours at night due to jetlag. I’m going to stay up all night to overcome the jetlag, and my condition is fine.
Q. Did you prepare for the ‘Flame Terran’ playstyle? A. I was aware of it, so I was able to win with ease.
Q. You will play against oGsInCa in the Ro16. A. There are only 3 protosses left, and I have to play him already, this is bad news. I think the winner will be the top protoss. Since it is fall, I think we will have a protoss winner.
Q. oGsMC said that he can’t be the top protoss, because he was knocked out. A. oGsMC is very good, but I think he lost due to the recent zerg buff. I think it will get better, so I hope he cheers up.
Q. Since you were victorious in Blizzcon, do you want to win again? A. I definitely want to. I think it’s a pity to take all the victories, so if I do win, I will not participate in the next season.
Q. Don’t you think your fans will be disappointed if you win and don’t show up in season 3? A. There are many good protosses without me in the mix, so it’ll be ok. There is no guarantee that I’ll win, I just said that for the sake of saying it (laughs).
Q. Any comments? A. Thanks to those who helped me practice. If I mention their names, people will look through match history, so I won’t.
The Blizzcon champion NEXGenius defeated oGsInCa 2:1 to advance to the Ro8.
Q. You feelings on the victory? A. My goal is to win the tournament, and I’m happy that I just beat the hardest opponent. There is nothing to stop me. It feels great.
Q. Are you still fatigued from Blizzcon? A. I slept at 2AM after my Ro16 match. I was very dizzy, but I was energized.
Q. You started off slow losing the first set. A. oGsInCa’s strategy was good. I have nothing else to say.
Q. You won strategically in set 2 and 3. Were these builds prepared? A. My opponent expanded too early, so I grabbed the opportunity to go blink stalkers. In the third set, I was sure to beat his DTs if I managed to get a robo up.
Q. Your next opponent is last season’s runner-up HopeTorture. A. He is indeed the runner-up from last season, but he is weak compared to other terrans I know. Since sSKS did not qualify, I think I can win for sure.
Q. Any comments? A. choyafOu is great in practice, I think he can make it far next season. I also want to thank Kim Sang Jun for practicing with me.
I can see why people don't like him, but honestly he's got more flavor in him than a lot of these Korean guys.
That's just a cultural thing though. It doesn't bother me too much.
I guess what surprises me is that if people are so upset over him saying things like that, why aren't they all over Idra with torches and pitchforks? Maybe they are and we just don't talk about it.
Q. You’re being considered one of the top protosses. A. People compare me a lot with sSKS, but since he didn’t qualify this time, I think I’m the top protoss (laughs).
Well, I was wondering why Tester would dislike this guy. I think I just found my answer.

Genius' responses are definitely more radical than other interviewees. However, that's not the only way to add flavor to an interview (see: Stork). I find it almost fittingly ironic that he was knocked out right after declaring that he had no difficult opponents left >_>
It's kind of refreshing to see a more colorful interview with a Korean player, as they were few and far between for the BW PL. Sure it might be a bit much in some instances, but I completely prefer that to the usual.
His confidence spills a little bit over into cockiness, and I think it's viewed as extra-cocky in the Korean culture. I like his confidence, although the "no, no, no" finger shake in Game 1 of GSL RO8 followed by + Show Spoiler +
While I can see how many people can find his confidence annoying and cocky, I think his confidence makes him a very awesome player. Also he is not afraid to admit when he messed up (Season 1).
Nexgenius is an amazing player. He changed his playstyle against hopetorture, idk why, but hes a strong protoss and will be very consistent in future tournaments
I guess what surprises me is that if people are so upset over him saying things like that, why aren't they all over Idra with torches and pitchforks? Maybe they are and we just don't talk about it.
Based on what little we can see, the Koreans seem to really dislike IdrA due to his BM.
I dig his confidence. It spices up the GSL. But so far both of his losses have been due to overconfidence. In GSL1 he didn't bother scouting early. In GSL2 he assumed HopeTorture was a pushover. Two bad calls.
I always find it hilarious when someone this arrogant and cocky gets roflstomped. He is more interesting then a generic progamer however he takes it too far without having much to back it up, except Blizzcon.
Genius owns, do you all literally want every single Korean interview to be like, "I tried really hard and practiced hard and won some hard games. I want to thank my teammates, my beautiful mother, and my father's semen." or "I don't feel I played well and lost I will practice hard and try better next time, sorry to fans."
Wow, this guy is more cocky than I thought he was.
Q. You’re about to play games in North America, how do you feel? A. I’m very honoured. Foreigners are known to play games freely, but I think that Koreans are still better gamers. I’m expecting the Blizzcon main events to be a lot easier than the qualifiers.

No. It's great to see someone saying some shit.
Seen Jaedong interviews? The guy can say w/e he wants and no one would say anything because HE'S THE DONG. NEXGenius is just some cocky guy who won a Blizzcon tournament.
Q. There are discussions on who the top protoss is between you and oGsMC. A. The top protoss is definitely sSKS, but oGsMC has been improving. I hope we can all do well.
And honestly, I think he's way better than hopetorture if he plays his regular robo build. Hopetorture said he was surprised he didn't have to play against it. This however confirms to me why he lost:
Q. Your goal at the moment? A. I have come up with new builds, which I was able to hide in the Ro64. I want to show off these builds in the tournament. I think last season was a punishment for not practicing.
He wanted to show off his new builds. I mean look at his games against terran. Always slow macro from robo play. And he completely dominates with it. But look at his builds against Hopetorture's terran. Voidray play and blink stalker. In short he got cocky thinking he could beat Hopetorture with his untested spiffy creative builds instead of his tried and true robo play.

He's only the highest-achieving Korean Protoss, after all.
ps: remember when JD was knocked out of the OSL by backho? People lose games.
Yeah, he's a little cocky, but I like that. It's not like he's cocky and bm. If you have been doing well lately then of course you want to win the whole thing. He's one of the few Korean players that shows personality and doesn't give boring answers.
Despite being cocky, NexGenius is without a doubt a top5 protoss. His games in the grand finals of Blizzcon were very solid (4-0ing Loner isn't as easy as he made it look) and he's the protoss that made it the farthest so far (i think).

I think its funny how much slack he's getting for waving his finger at the camera after taking the first game of ITR. yeah, he didn't do as well following that, but at least he was entertaining...maybe idra will be supplanted as lead villain.

anyways, thanks for the interviews.
Really? For just waving a finger?
There was a time when it took throwing rice at the other team while stripping to a bathing suit and dancing your way into the sea before getting on a table to crotch-thrust the sky to raise peoples' attention.
I dislike NEXGenius, and in fact, I dislike most Protoss players (don't like Protoss in general). Zerg is tolerable, but don't like them much as well. However, this makes watching the games all the more exciting. I was super happy when the "finger wagger" got pwned
I have a similar example in soccer. I love watching the English Premier League because I really dislike Manchester United.
I have a rating system about how much enjoyment I get out of a match: 1. The liking differential of the players (e.g. if Boxer plays Nada, the difference is not much, as compared to Boxer vs NEXGenius). 2. The prestige of the match (e.g. how big the tournament is, finals > R64). 3. The quality of the players/game.
These 3 criteria are then multiplied. Thus, a lower score on one criteria will affect the enjoyment level. However, it's a double edged sword: if the player I want to win loses... then effectively the score is a large negative, and I'll be super pissed!
NEXGenius is a bad-ass despite getting eliminated. Its also nice to see that he referenced the "Legend of the Fall" in one of his interviews. Sadly, it won't be coming true

Thanks for the package interviews. I am now a NEXGenius fan based off these responses. He even retraces his steps and admits he thinks Tester is still the best Toss after his proclaimed "I'm the best, mayyyynneee. [I deeed it]."
Lolol. As Pervect says, It's nice to see some damn personality. Hope he actually is able to win something though T_T. Not comlpetely on his hype train yet. It feels like he does a lot of things blind or is taking a lot of risks... Ok that complaint is a bit silly but still mnn.

So you would rather that only the best of the best can talk shit? That would make 99% of interviews boring as hell. I prefer to see more people act cocky, even if half of them end up losing. Eg FBH made for great entertainment.

Boxing would be so much less interesting without the trash-talk and bad manner.
When athletes BM, people watch, either in hatred or support for the BM player (This is true for at least Basketball and Boxing, the 2 sports I'm familiar with, I dont know for other sports).

This is just bizarre. He won fucking Blizzcon days ago!
Genius is quite a good interviewee compared to a lot of other players. His personality shines through and it's nice to see him have confidence in protoss when they were having such a bad showing. Definitely a fan of this guy
also, how many people would like another interview package from previous gsl season 2 victories? im thinking the likes of foxer, idra, boxer, nada. i wouldn't mind the work if enough ppl wanted me to do it haha
When people respond like this in interviews, it doesn't necessarily make me like them, but it sure as hell makes the interviews more entertaining. You don't need to like what he does, but you have to admit that people like this make it more exciting.
Thanks for the interviews. Now I understand (and agree with) the people who disliked him. Though admittedly, if he had won the whole GSL with interviews like that after every match, I probably would've ended up loving him/his attitude.
Q. Since you were victorious in Blizzcon, do you want to win again? A. I definitely want to. I think it’s a pity to take all the victories, so if I do win, I will not participate in the next season."
Lmao Best answer ever, sc2 needs more people like this :D

What a question!?!?! Go for it :p
And thanks for this one! I dont think the interview is too bad. I expected something a lot worse... He is saying that he is the best etc.. Americans do this all the time in SC -> Artosis always points out how much he likes confident people who say that they will win a tournament instead of the typical "Lets see how far I get" "I look from round to round"..etc.
Actually I dont care much about what people say. I like the interviews because sometimes they give some insight to current strategy trends etc. Talking about the players is mostly trash talk or over modesty imo..
I like the one about not competing in the next gsl if he wins, since he's taking down so many tournaments lol. Overall I didn't think his answers were that arrogant or offensive or whatever. Just confident, its good to have some personality.
Unless that sounds completely different in korean I'm not sure why people who have such a beef with him.
It sounds as if he is complimenting inca and tester, claiming he can win as long as they are not in the tournament (possibly because PvP is his worst MU?).
But yeah, he's real cocky. But honestly I assumed it would be worse.
Q. Since you were victorious in Blizzcon, do you want to win again? A. I definitely want to. I think it’s a pity to take all the victories, so if I do win, I will not participate in the next season.

Haha that's response to one thread on one korean message board. Would you like if I used one TL thread to generalize the whole western response to something? He also didn't post all the comments. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if he had few fans in Korea, I was more objecting to the attempt to use zenio's ceremony as evidence of something besides zenio disliking idra.
This guy is awesome. Although it's sad that he's considering switching races. Truth be told though, I wonder how many Protoss will make it through past the ro64 - when even real pros like nexgenius think toss are in trouble.
At the very least it'll make tomorrows 1 Protoss matchup interesting to watch.
Hes pretty cool in my book. Being a bit arrogant and honest with some humour is good. Ppl who are just crudely arrogant without being funny are just embarrasing.
"Wath's up" shirt.. i guess P is UPsince hes changing race

We don't actually know if these interviews are the [sole] source of the animosity, though.
PimpGENIUS is a baller. Actually using interviews for mind games, calling his opponents weak, I love it. I'm slowly starting to say he's the best Protoss.
I hope people can see that he acknowledges Tester as the best protoss in the world, even if he didn't qualify. Tester is really a top player, even if he has his weak moments. I am sad that I cannot cheer for him.
I will cheer for the protosses in the competition. Go Genius, go MC!

This is exactly what I've been thinking as well. I don't like when someone talks down on another player, but Genius just shows some attitude without insulting other players, I like it=)
I guess it's cultural. In the West that kind of attitude will be considered amusing, and then when it bites him in the ass when he fails to love up to the talk we just laugh at him.
Its nic eto see guys go like "Yea im going to try my best yea my opponent played well i just got lucky" this guy is like yea man im a Bad ass at SC2 and im going to keep kicking ass.

SC2 is such a new game, and yeah Tester rocked socks in the beta, but isn't it time to let go? Maybe Protoss needs a new hero. I'm sure we'll see more of Tester, but I don't know if people can still keep calling him the "best in the world" when he hasn't qualified twice in a row.

The best Protoss, not the best overall. The latter would indeed be not very close.
But there's no consistently brilliant protoss player out there. Probably the most consistent player of all top protoss is Genius himself, but even he got eliminated in the round of 64 in GSL1, and God knows what will he do in GSL3. His games haven't been any higher level than other protosses, and he failed to impress much even in All Stars. So the title of the best protoss is up for grabs. Nobody can unequivocally point to one player, as far as I am concerned.
NEXGenius (P) Q. What makes it so hard to play? A. Terrans are grabbing timing windows too quickly. They don't let the protoss be alone in the early game. Zerg is hard to play against because of the recent patch.
yeah there was a thread about it but the admins closed it for some stupid reason, the best protoss player changing races? nah not worth discussing but dimaga qq thread is ok.. so biased :/
i love seeing nexgenius lose. although he's a great player, i personally dislike his style of 'confidence'. it seems more like it borders bm (especially that finger wave/taunt during the gsl). however, i like idra's style of bm because it's just hiliarious to read lol.

I think it's hilarious. Genius = overconfident even when his race is in the freakin dark ages. Sooo funny. Anyway, I think Tester is the best Protoss player at the moment, just sayin'
On November 24 2010 09:33 Fa1nT wrote: Genius has the best results though, and that's kinda what matters.
Yep I see your point. But I feel Tester is the stronger player and once he stops choking in almost every high profile game, he'll dominate. That's what I think anyway. Yes, Genius is more consistent and that is indeed what matters but I don't think he's better.

Damn, it seems indeed unfair. We had a huge thread with FD threatening to switch, why didn't they remove that one?

Interesting. Have any more information on it? I'm curious as well . . .
Q. You’re being considered one of the top protosses. A. People compare me a lot with sSKS, but since he didn’t qualify this time, I think I’m the top protoss (laughs).
Well, I was wondering why Tester would dislike this guy. I think I just found my answer.
He could very well be joking? You also need to take this quote into account:
"The top protoss is definitely sSKS, but oGsMC has been improving. I hope we can all do well."
EDIT: Oops, I'm sorry. I was looking at the more recent Genius thread, got linked to this one, accidentally replied to one of the posts here and ended up bumping it.
I like his response to race imbalance. Instead of complaining or using it as an excuse, he simply says that he'll show everyone that protoss is good by playing better.
