How many points did you lose going to Diamond?

I'm a 1.4k platinum eagerly awaiting a diamond promotion for some time now. I'm just curious how many points some of you lost when going from platinum to diamond. I went from gold 950~ to platinum 720~, is the drop about the same for diamond? (about 25%) or is it entirely variable?

Obviously different people have different experiences, just looking to see some actual numbers.

You are placed against people based on your ELO rating. This rating is indirectly represented by your number of points. Your league placement is also based on your ELO rating. People lose points when they get to diamond because they're nervous. The players you're playing against are the exact same pool of players you were playing the match before you were promoted to diamond.

This was specifically mentioned at Blizzcon as well. Jumping in leagues doesn't change the players you play, it's not staggered.

That's not what he's talking about at all. When you get promoted to a new league, your points drop. It's not about losing or wining games after the promotion. As far as I've heard, the exact amount isn't consistent.

Just a slightly off topic question, would only keeping about a +15 w/l in plat keep me from ever getting into Diamond?

I was at 1.5k platinum and got promoted yesterday. I started with almost exactly 300 points less, around high 1.2k.

2100 bronze, with a 90 game win streak, to around 400 diamond, at the time when 1200 was considered high.

That's weird, because 0 diamond gets about 400 points as bronze if demoted.

I think the amount of points you get when you are transferred into the division might be based off how much bonus pool you had left. When I was promoted from platinum to diamond I had no bonus pool leftover, and I think I was up around 1450points in platinum; when promoted to diamond it put me at ~1230points.
Anyway - I think the more bonus pool you have the lower # of points you'll get when initially transferred into diamond (this is solely based on my own experience =p )

~800 plat to 525 diamond.
I think it has to do with what the system thinks your actual level is (your hidden rating).

My 2v2 random is at gold with 10-1... facing a lot of dia though so doesn't really matter your league...

Check your average diamond opponents points. If you are 50/50 against them, then you will get pts similar to them.

I think you've misunderstood him. If a 1500 point plat player (we're just talking visible points here!) player gets promoted to diamond after a win, he'll only have upwards of 1000 (at best) points in his new diamond division. The part about not meeting more difficult opposition is correct, though.

I had to MASSGAME for ridiculously long time to get the promotion. At one point I even had a win streak of over 15 games in a row - just waiting for promotion which was absent...

The point drop was massive like 1400 --> 400. (I remember it being about minus ~1000 points which was a sick surprise).

I think this was because I was "illegally bad" player when I started SC2, but I'm a gamer for life so I was learning by doing until I pretty much started stomping the level where I used to play at. This was resulting in a low amount of starting points for Diamond... :o

Update on my situation..finally after losing 3 in a row to Morrow and other 2000+ people, won vs Ourk (yet another 2000+ player) and got promoted to diamond!

So, you can imagine my surprise when my points went from 1400 plat to 788 diamond, with 506 bonus pool left...good luck getting to 2000 (where aparently I should be judging from the ppl I match vs) let alone more than that, no comments T__T

Ha I feel for you man. But you should cheer up! I think we've agreed upon that your MMR doesn't get altered when you get promoted, so if you stay at the level you're at now, you'll eventually end up at a level corresponding to who you're facing.

Yup sc2ranks.com.. There you can search for players, including yourself, and check win percentages etc etc

I am not sure on the exact numbers but I went from slightly above 300 plat to slightly above 200 Diamond. I didn't lose very much - but I didn't have much to lose to start with. Since there seems to be a pretty wide variance, maybe it has to do with where the match making system expects you to end up and what your remaining bonus pool is.

I got promoted today, with 1350 points. I even race switched a couple weeks after getting to Plat, from Toss to Zerg. (this was at the beginning of September) Still, I stayed in Platinum and made my way up to Diamond. 217-196 is W/L ratio.

I didn't lose any points, but I got promoted early. Something like

287 plat -> 287 Diamond.

I went 5-0 in my placement matches, so maybe that made a difference? Honestly I was surprised I wasn't placed in Diamond right away. But I really have no clue how that all works.

You can't get placed in diamond straight away from placement matches. I'm a bit surprised you didn't lose any points when promoted. What was your record like post placement matches before you were promoted?

You can't get placed in diamond straight away from placement matches. I'm a bit surprised you didn't lose any points when promoted. What was your record like post placement matches before you were promoted?

Pretty bad. After the placement matches I went 10-9 for a record of 15-9. Oddly enough I performed better once I got into diamond.

I went from 1.3k platinum to 1.2k diamond. I think the amount of points you keep when you get promoted depends on how good you play against equal pointed diamond player, if you know what I mean....

Weird, I wonder why I lost some points and you didn't. Things went/are going roughly the same for me. Around the same point total when promoted with about the same ratio. What kind of players are you getting matched up against? I sort of think it has to do with remaining bonus pool and where you're expected to end up. If you're getting matched against slightly higher opponents it would make sense.

Edit: Just averaged the rating of my last 10 opponents and came up with about 1450. If my little theory is right yours should come out just a bit higher.

I lost around 200 points both times. Yes I've done it twice on the same account.

Just to add my own input (since I started this silly thread) I finally broke diamond after floating in the top of platinum for ages (nearly 2 months? Top 10 the entire time?)

1840 plat -> 1710 diamond

Woo!

Gosh I hope this is what's in store for me.

I went from 1300 diamonds to about 1500 plat, then ranked up to 1800+ very easily. Been in the top 100 platinum in world since.

I need to play a lot more so I can get my promotion back, darn it.

I'm at 1.3k Plat, awaiting promotion anytime now, so I'd probably be at around 1100 diamond no?

1800 plat -> 1750 diamond

I think this is because the stupid ranking system had me stuck in platinum for ages. I think I was 100-47 when it moved me up, and I was beating 1700+ diamond players non-stop for the last ~15 wins of that record.

If you do well against equally rated diamond players, it keeps your ranking close to that rating.

I was about 700 plat -> 600 diamond.

Never even got to play a plat player while I was in plat. ):

So did I, but overall - a good choice by the system. When you don't belong in D league, you don't get to be a D league.

Diamonds, I'm coming for ya'.

I got promoted today (yay!!!) i went from ~1900 platinum to 1670 diamond and ranking fourth on my division, I actually didn't expect to be rank that high, but on the other hand I was beating ~1800 diamond players, but anyways, I'm so happy now

it shouldn't matter ya? because your pool is the same since the ELO (or MMR) is very similar to when you were in Plat (or whatever the old league was).

so basically the only difference is the points which shouldn't matter because if you play enough, you will eventually get so high point wise that you won't even worry about it anymore

Like 600-> 200, was a while back.

Doesn't it depend on which diamond division you enter? If you enter a good one you lose a lot, if you enter a mediocre one from a high platinum you lose little.

I had approximately 1400 plat points, and went up to 1650 when I switched to diamond.

Granted, I was in platinum for about 1 month cranking out wins, but w.e

1900 bronze -> 900 diamond on a 2v2 team (lost the first 5 games intentionally to stomp lower players for fun with weird builds)

something like this, I then proceeded to drop 200 points. This was a few months ago, I'm same level now but +~600 bonus points
