The players you're playing against are the exact same pool of players you were playing the match before you were promoted to diamond. This was specifically mentioned at Blizzcon as well. Jumping in leagues doesn't change the players you play, it's not staggered.

Anyway - I think the more bonus pool you have the lower # of points you'll get when initially transferred into diamond (this is solely based on my own experience =p )

I think it has to do with what the system thinks your actual level is (your hidden rating).

But one of my friends only lost like 50 points. So he went from 1000 plat -> 950 diamond... lucky bastard.

If a 1500 point plat player (we're just talking visible points here!) player gets promoted to diamond after a win, he'll only have upwards of 1000 (at best) points in his new diamond division. The part about not meeting more difficult opposition is correct, though.

The point drop was massive like 1400 --> 400. (I remember it being about minus ~1000 points which was a sick surprise). I think this was because I was "illegally bad" player when I started SC2, but I'm a gamer for life so I was learning by doing until I pretty much started stomping the level where I used to play at. This was resulting in a low amount of starting points for Diamond... :o

So, you can imagine my surprise when my points went from 1400 plat to 788 diamond, with 506 bonus pool left...good luck getting to 2000 (where aparently I should be judging from the ppl I match vs) let alone more than that, no comments T__T

I think we've agreed upon that your MMR doesn't get altered when you get promoted, so if you stay at the level you're at now, you'll eventually end up at a level corresponding to who you're facing. True, guess I'll have to play more tho ![]() ![]()

287 plat -> 287 Diamond. I went 5-0 in my placement matches, so maybe that made a difference? Honestly I was surprised I wasn't placed in Diamond right away. But I really have no clue how that all works.

I'm a bit surprised you didn't lose any points when promoted. What was your record like post placement matches before you were promoted?

Oddly enough I performed better once I got into diamond.

Weird, I wonder why I lost some points and you didn't. Things went/are going roughly the same for me. Around the same point total when promoted with about the same ratio. What kind of players are you getting matched up against? I sort of think it has to do with remaining bonus pool and where you're expected to end up. If you're getting matched against slightly higher opponents it would make sense. Edit: Just averaged the rating of my last 10 opponents and came up with about 1450. If my little theory is right yours should come out just a bit higher.

Been in the top 100 platinum in world since. I need to play a lot more so I can get my promotion back, darn it.

I think this is because the stupid ranking system had me stuck in platinum for ages. I think I was 100-47 when it moved me up, and I was beating 1700+ diamond players non-stop for the last ~15 wins of that record. If you do well against equally rated diamond players, it keeps your ranking close to that rating.

so basically the only difference is the points which shouldn't matter because if you play enough, you will eventually get so high point wise that you won't even worry about it anymore

Doesn't it depend on which diamond division you enter? If you enter a good one you lose a lot, if you enter a mediocre one from a high platinum you lose little.
