Aww anyone else feel bad for Cool? His parents never supported him but now when they're set to gain $85,000 they turn up to the event? Also Cool's mom is straight away on the phone probably bragging about how she has all this money.

I dunno just think Cool should of kept like half the money for himself.

I have this sentiment too, but how do you know he's giving all of the money to his parents? I'm pretty sure he doesn't say so in the interview.

It's an Asian country, you can bet he does.

I don't get why it's so hard to understand someone would give their prize money to their parents. Think about all the expenses your parents paid for you: free housing, free food, clothes, schooling, medical bills, entertainment. Then add in whatever you think is fair for, you know, giving you your life.

Is 80k really that much? And by the way, that's a lot of assumptions you made there, based solely on the fact that he's asian.

80k is a ton of money, what are you talking about?

If you think it only takes 80k to raise a kid then lol. A quick google search put the cost of a child for a $40-$70k income family at $180k

do you realise how far $85,000 goes in Korea?

Not that far. This isn't SE Asia.

Hopefully he doesn't live in Seoul, one of the most expensive cities in the world.

How does Seoul compare to New York city (afaik the most expensive city in the US) in terms of costs of living?

85K goes a long way in Seoul, where the average wage is 30K a year.
Dont look at the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.

The whole "reimburse your parents" stuff sounds pretty inadequate. If your parents lose their jobs and struggle to find new ones because they're too old, while you're making a skyhigh salary, you gonna tell them no sorry I've already paid back my share so I'm not gonna help you? And if it's the other way around and their income is way higher than yours for whatever reason (e.g. you've chosen a field that doesn't pay that well), you gonna eat ramen everyday and live a shitty life because you need to reimburse them money they don't need in the slightest? That's fucked up. Money should just go to the one(s) in need. Also, gratitude for being born is strange, it's how they treat you afterwards that counts, if my parents just produced me and then treated me like shit for my entire life you can be sure I wouldn't give them any more than the strict necessary for them to survive.

$30k/y looks pretty high to me.

Anyway it's been a while since I've seen a progamer interview derailed this much. :D

screw you guys for calling cool's mom a golddigger. it's really possible that she is just going to keep the money for him until he gets married (I think it's pure good old loving statement without any greed inparted)

My father's like this, I give him half of my earnings at work and it pays a lot since he keeps some in the bank for me to use in the future.

Since we're both from totally different cultures:
May I ask why you just dont keep half of your earnings in the bank for later use?
I personally dont see the benefit from giving it to your father for safekeeping. Or are you frightened to use it all up and dont have anything left over for later?

Is it just a cultural thing or has it a deeper meaning which I dont see?

On the mother topic:
Ever thought the mother is calling the father / other family members?
And why should she run on the stage to "hug" him? He's a grown man, even I would consider that awkward and strange. Even more so if you consider asian culture and "keeping face".

About Fruitdealer:
Glad he won. He's seems to be a cool guy (pun intended). Hope he will bless us with his play in future GSLs

Thank you for the translations

uhhh lol @ epik640x. Seoul is definitely NOT one of the most expensive cities in the world. heres a link to April 2009 cost of living rankings for cities:
http://seoulwalk.com/2009/07/28/cost-of-living-international-rankings-for-1-april-2009/

Seoul is chillin at #163. New York is at #19

Oh and @ Ocedic, I don't like or agree with your philosophy. So a child of an abusive alcoholic father owes him just because he decided to get drunk one night and mess around with another drunk slut? The father gave him life right? Cool's parents didnt acknowledge his passion about pro gaming until there was an $85,000 prize on the line, so he's somehow obligated to give them some of that prize money for all the support he received?

Also, all of those expenses you listed are obligatory by the parents. You never asked to be born and it sure as hell wasnt your fault that you werent born with the ability to hold down a 9 to 5 and provide for yourself. And the way you put it, its like having a kid is some very long term investment. You know, put deposit all those expenses like clothes, food, school, etc. along with a nice semen sample and egg, and after 30 years of appreciation he might pay you back! Messed up man..

I honestly think mothers of korea are not the same as we are used to in the west. If someone picture a western mom, a worn out, angry/bitter feminist might pop up, or a single mom sitting at cafe smoking cigarettes. I think it pretty safe to say there is a unbalance in western families today, only a minority are lucky enough to have balanced parents that might also still live together.

So dont get surprised when people are responding very defensive in favours of Cool, when it comes to his distribution of his money. I hope and think his mother are a good person thinking the best of his interest.

Loved what Cool said in the interview, spot on everything, he truly played 130%

I'm Chinese, and I don't think that Chinese parents really care about the money (though they do care), it's more that they want to feel successful by having their children be successful (getting rich, being famous, starting family, whatever); that's why they push so hard for a 'good' education and all that.
It's kind of a depressing way to live, but at this point I can't really bring myself to argue the point any more.

There might have been only 3500 people in the stadium but I want to know how many foreign paid accounts there were and how many local Korean streams were running.

Cool's parents thought he was making a poor life choice spending so much time gaming. They probably thought his time was better spent on more traditional focuses. I'm betting they are happily surprised that they were wrong. I don't think there's anything to terrible about their actions and I don't think they're gold digging. Alluding to any similarity between them and an alcoholic father that had sex with a drunk slut one night is horribly out of line.

Does FruitDealer's family actually sell fruit?

His parents never supported his progaming dream. Kinda harsh, but understandable. Cool never made it big till today. In comparison, IntoTheRainbow is a much bigger name. Up to this point, there has been no reason for the parents to support an empty dream and uncertain career.

Heck, being a progamer isn't much of a career.

not the first time a gamers parents have been accused of being a gold-digger by random foreigner who doesn't understand the asian culture or anything at all about the relations between the player and their parents..

was it Jaedong's parents that was accused last time or was it flash? can't really remember..

seriously, what the hell? not even the first 4 placers are seeded for the next GSL? would really suck monekyballs if top caliber players doesn't even make it through prelimnaries because of bad luck in brackets and let some random guy into the top 64 : /

His mother Kinda said that She would be keeping his money safe till he gets married in the interview.

I dunno what"s the big Deal , If he wants to give the money then let it be.You don"t necessarily know that just because his parents never came to the event they never supported him?

Plus I can see how hard it was for his parents to see him choose an erratic life as a programmer where you either win or you don"t. Being a Fruit Dealer isn"t easy you know.

Thanks for the translation.

Anyway, this championship was so well deserved. Cool had the un-matched skill and touching story coming into this gsl. His games have inspired me the same way Savior did in bw <3!
