I just lost like 8 or so games in a row and now I feel like absolute shit. 3 of those games were from dropping, 1 of them a silly 6pool, and the rest were long good games where I just couldn't pull through for the win. I mean I don't mind losing as long as I play a good game, but it gets to the point where losing becomes really frustrating.
I came home from work today, cleaned up a bit, and hopped on to have some good games on SC2. Losing so many times in row totally ruined my mood, and I don't even feel motivated anymore to continue playing. Improving my game is all fine and dandy but having a few wins here and there along the way helps to keep up the momentum. Not winning at all can be a real drag after awhile...
UDSADA&*(DUAODOIJI@#IOJO)@!U#*()U!*()@#
At this point I'm trying really hard not to toss my keyboard out the window =_=, writing up this thread is an attempt to calm myself down. Wouldn't you guys be pissed if you lost a bunch of 20 minute - 30 minute games, not to mention the random drops...
Do you guys think I should just man up and mass up another 10+ games through the night, or should I just take a break and play some other day? How should I readjust my mindset when I start losing 6 + games in row? What do you guys do when you start losing a bunch? Please do share.

If you go on a big losing streak what i usually do is just stop for a couple days then come back and usually ill win a couple games
I have friends who will play it out until they get atleast one win though, so i guess its just up to you

What the hell???
Anyways OP,
I would watch your replays and try to note your biggest flaw. Play a few games and focus on that flaw, sometimes practicing a certain thing is better than just massing games. Good luck.

Watch some streams. I've found after getting frustrated from a long losing streak that sitting back and seeing what someone else does helps me to think what I've been doing wrong.

I have friends who will play it out until they get atleast one win though, so i guess its just up to you I never understood the "end on a win" mentality. Personally, it just never seemed like that big of a deal to me.
And yeah, if you're really getting worked up about it, then you should probably take a break, as it's likely impacting your play. I generally take a break to play 2v2, UMS games, or some off-race practice games with friends.
it depends. if im mad ill stop playing, if i take the losses well ill keep playing
I recently lost 5 games in a row which totally destroyed my record (I was like 80% => 60%) and now I am winning again. NEver give up and keep on fighting!!! After losing a lot you start winning a lot ^^
I'd recommend playing 2v2 or 3v3 ladder, or 2v2/3v3 custom, or Nexus Wars. Grinding away in the 1v1 ladder is pretty depressing really. It's more fun to play with friends. Unless you plan on becoming a progamer or a full-time player, just accept that you can't be the best and take your loses more lightly.

I usually do something else that's low stress for a bit, but I've been where you are, losing a couple intense games in a row. It does get frustrating but it is pretty rewarding at the same time imo. More fun than losing to 1 base timing pushes 3 times in a row after having to quit in the first 2 seconds of a game because of an emergency. Those losses are the ones that burn me.
Keep playing and with the way the AMM works you'll get a run of easier opponents and go on a bit of win streak yourself.
After i get like 3-4 or losses in a row( unless i played good fun games, then i dont really mind), I throw in a TV series or go working out. If i only need a little break I do like 1-2 SP or vs A.I. achievements (since i run out of SP achievements). Even though i dont really care for achievements they just fit in perfectly to do a 10-15 min break and distract yourself. This really works great for me, in WC3 i always rage quit for the rest of the day and smashed something in my room or shouted at my sister. (Was a big ass if i now look back)
gl handling your losses !
When I go on a losing spree, I like to calm down with Co-Op games with other players I don't know. It's pretty fun, and there's no pressure into winning, unlike a ladder. I also play custom games like Nexus Wars. You should try it; they added a new Fog of War update!
If you're losing a bunch and it just demoralizes you, go take a break and do something else. Or play UMS or something for a bit. It's not like you can't go watch some TV or something and just come back later
just stop playing for like 30 minutes, think about what you should do better and then go play again with the right mindset which should always be "I'm going to play at the best of my capacity"
I dont know about you guys but once I loose 2-3 games in a row. Sh1t just starts happening.
I was on a 3 lost streak, then the next game baneling all-in'd (never happened before), after that, cannon inbased, and last but not least to finish off the beautiful day, blue screen of death on a PvZ I was certain I had the advantage of.
I'll usually have a plan for playing a set number of games, regardless of their result I'll stick to it. After that I'll take a bit of a break, grab a drink/snack, and then watch through the replays - all of them, both wins and losses. I'll pay attention to things I wasn't doing well, what the other player did to beat me, where my macro was sloppy, etc etc.
Then I'll think of that for a little bit, and play another set of games. Rinse and repeat.

I'v been dealing with similar stuff the last couple of days, I really want to ladder a lot and honestly I'm not doing too bad overall but at some points I suddenly go on a losing streak like 2 wins 8 losses. At some points I also go on a good winning streak though but it just feels like the losses outweigh the wins and I kinda just rage hard and stop playing for a while. It really sucks because I don't want to stop, I want to play Yesterday I even tried 6pooling to get in better mood (pretty much the second time ever I 6pooled), but the other zerg also 6 pooled so the match turned into something completely retarded, so that didn't work out that well.
I usually either take a break like arb says, or exercise. Maybe 4 or 5 minutes of push-ups and sit-ups on every bad loss help me get a different frame of mind (instead of unhappy, now I'm tired ). There's some scientific reasons for it but i'll save the readers from my psychobabble and just finish by saying that it helps.
If I've been losing for a while and I'm starting to get annoyed or frustrated I'll stop or do something relaxing like playing a 2v2 or watching a stream.
Remember how Dayvie (david kim) was #1 on US server for highest points? Well before he was at like 70somethingt :30 something losses but I just checked again hes at 59-aout 100 games.
ouch, checked his match history he lost like 5-6 games in a row.
sh1t happeneds. HuK just overtook dayvie ! http://sc2ranks.com/ranks/all/diamond/1
but ofc these are just points who cares about points, its w/l that matters!
I really feel your pain. I've been on a 2 day losing streak, where I'll lose like 5 games in a row then win maybe 1, I can't get a steady rythm of wins going, gone down like 100 points in a day. It's extremely frusturating and I've decided to take a break, listen to music, eat and then I'll probably resume.
For some reason though, when I go on a winning streak I'll automatically go to a losing streak the day after. Its like I forgot how to play, my hands move slow, I panic when harassed etc. Its really wierd.
I started in gold league with 3 frustrating defeats in a row (6 pool, hidden pylon, cannon rush), I really got upset, but I took some time to watch the replays, to see what I did wrong, also checked the the forum to see how to react to these early cheese strats, and later I started having about the even win:loss ratio, I think the system will soon enough start pairing you with opponents of your rank, so you'll have some wins and some losses.
This is a great thread that I have bookmarked, and read it every now and then:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=142131
It just helps to set your self some goals (I set my self a goal of good macro, keeping up with Day9's mantra of probes - food cap - minerals, using my chrono boost and executing my standard build), so even when I lose sometimes I feel a bit of a satisfaction that I did some of my goals
I've been forcing myself to mass game win or lose. I have to say that my rating would be higher if I only played when I was rested, caffeinated, and happy, but I think I'm becoming a much better player from playing Starcraft II like I would any other game-- I boot up a quick last game before bed, when stoned or drunk, etc. Queuing after a string of losses is always hard, and I usually play overly aggressively which in Starcraft is SUCH a bad thing.
You should definately take a break. Close the game and clear you mind of anything starcraft related. When you get into a funk it's likely something psychological that is throwing you off and you are simply making the problem worse with stress as you keep losing. A solid half hour of something simple, like a shoot em up, a work out, cooking yourself a kick-ass steak (and eating it) should help straighten you out. Just get your head back on your shoulders and come back fresh.
Start drinking beers until you get drunk skills or pass out.
hah i was 499 on the ladder on saturday and went through a huge losing streak around 10 or 11 games and went like 3-14 and went under 400.. sucks i had a good win % too, guess i have alot of work to do. I think it would be better if i didnt think about it and just purely concentrated on my game instead of lingering over feeling bad about losing so much
Awesome advice guys thank you. After reading the first post from cr4ckshot (TY for the temp ban) I flipped out and shut off my comp and hopped on the treadmill. Then I come back to read some great posts. I watched a few of the games I lost, and it definitely shows when you start going on tilt. Bad decisions...forgetting to scout... etc.
Really goes to show how your mental can affect you =P.

hey snuggles i had a total shit streak yesterday as well
all i know is sometimes your fingers hit the wrong hotkeys, and your mind is never on what you should be doing! we all have those days.
but then again there are days where our game sense is absolutely on target! don't get discouraged :3
Take a break, have a drink, go do something else for a while, or else you're just gonna get pissed off and play worse.
My family used to have a saying: "If your fun makes you cry, stop."

Yeah, thats true, we all have our bad days now and then. Someone else earlier mentioned that even dayvie lost 5-6 games in a row, so even a pro can do bad,
AncienTs haven't I seen you before chatting in Opayaさん's stream?

Usually while you are on a loosing streak you will start to make mistakes and loose to stupid stuff too. It happens to me all the time, I got on a five game loosing streak, completely normal losses but then I loose focus and end up loosing a game to a proxygate or something stupid which makes me make even more mistakes. I try to take a break and watch a replay for a short time but in general I try to just push through by massing more games.
Eventually you will have to learn to deal with the loosing streaks anyway so might as well embrace them.
Always after lossing 3 games i usually play sotis XD that gets me right back on the mood ^^, i suggets go and get into a custom game of your preference
Whenever I get on a losing streak I open up the replay folder and watch the games. I go all Day9ish over them and analyze what happend in those games and learn from that. When I've analyzed the replays it helps me get into a good mindset and then I start winning.
![[image loading]](http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/63/screenshot2010081009375.th.jpg)
That's what happened yesterday. I had great games vs mid-high diamond players, although I lost them, so the 3 losses due to dropping really ticked me off to the point of tilting and then I started losing to low Diamond players =_= it was horrible.
But I followed your guys advice and played some more in the morning.
![[image loading]](http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/5546/screenshot2010081009373.th.jpg)
=D Sure they were all low diamond but hell I lost to these sort of players yesterday now I'm not even breaking a sweat. It really shows that when you get frustrated at the game you start making small mistakes like slipping up on your control over your units and lose a crucial battle that way. If you just avoid those small little slip-ups in a battle it can make a HUGE difference.
So aside from learning to cope with getting made at the game... I also learned that if you really really give it your all to micro a battle you can really come up far ahead. Sounds like common sense but most people either try to macro up too much as they fight or stand idle a little too much when a battle is going on. Micro as if your life depended upon and it'll work wonders.
I usually feel like crap when on a losing streaks. Thus losing more games. I usually just custom melee until I get my groove back and go back to ladder for a winning game.
take a break for a few minutes. calm yourself down. then try again.

When ever I get a streak of shit that annoys me I just stop playing for a while. Playing while you are pissed off never turns out well and I personally usually just end up losing more and getting more pissed. After I got zerg(my least fav race) 7 times in a row from randoming I just said fuck this and went off and read a book
Yeah, take a break, get a drink, chill out and think about something else, maybe watch some TV for a few minutes and when that active rage goes away if you still feel like playing give it a go
yeah you have a to take a break. so many times I have been playing bad but kept going only to drop more games. I go play mass effect or something then come back the next day and its a complete 180.
i suppose its like in poker when people go on tilt
<--- I was on a 12 game losing streak in p2 beta. In retail not higher than 7 games (or 8) losing streak.
I know how you feel what kind of frustration it is. For me I play some games good and lose and other games I actually play better than my opponent but I just give it away and that makes me even more frustrated.
What I do then is just man up and play games. I usually end up losing few more before I win again and go into a winning streak again. The losing just keeps reminding me from preventing the same mistakes or not ovelrook on few details which causes the losses.
Last night I lost seven games in a row to top level diamond players, but then I won the eighth game and got promoted to diamond league finally :D
So I say never give up, never surrender! Keep playing until you win!
I know each time idrA lose a game in ladder, he will play a UMS. I don't remember which one thought...
Its up to you. Everyone handle losing streak differently.
I generally stop and go drive some golf balls or pratice my chip or my long putt. I need to focus to do those things and when I come back, my focus is back on the game
When i go on a loss streak- I always go back and watch the replays of ALL the losses in a row. Ususally I'll find gaping holes in my game or see that I'm just macroing poorly. It's rare that i lose more than 2 in a row, so when it does happen, taking a break to watch the replays and see where im messing up usually gets me nice and focused for my next game. If I lose the next game... well im probably done for the night

Winning or losing shouldn't be the goal, they should be the result of how you played.
Watch your replays and look at what you did. If you lost doing what you planned then you pretty much got owned. Then just learn from it and try getting better.
If lost doing mistakes than either take a break or practice outside of the ladder. Custom games/build order tester/micro tester etc.
You are on tilt.
Stop for the day, regroup tommorow.
You are not thinking straight and you are will only get more frustrated when you lose more due to non-clearheaded-dness
I take breaks. I'll play somthing else. For instance during the beta when I got mad i'd speed run Super Metroid. My best time is 47 minutes. I always have another game to play if I feel like I need to take a break from starcraft 2 for the day.
Depends. Once I lost 6 in a row and was very calm about it and ended up winning 8 of my next 10. Another day I kept getting rolled by Terran and went like 3-5 and was absolutely furious. If you're playing well and are losing to better players then continue to play if you feel motivated. If you're getting frustrated and as a result lose focus, take a break until you calm down and can play with an actual goal in mind.
Honestly I have the exact opposite reaction. If I lose a game, I'm determined to play another. If I win a game, it's like I quit for the night.
Marine Arena is the ultimate rage-reducer.
Like many others, I usually take a break from the computer all together. I've broken a couple headsets from nerd rage. Do something for the little while, watch some TV and wind down a bit. I usually come back a few hours later and watch some streams and read some threads to get some tips. I then try and think about some of the matches and what I could've done differently and then start fresh.

I just had a three really stupid game losing streak, I should of won them but alas I lost. Raging like a maniac, so I'll do as I always do. Just take a break from playing and go back later fresh and ready to fight.
That's happens to me yesterday. A day like everything goes in the wrong direction . First game I take a lost from a 1 minute game drop.Right at the start I was red. During the 5 -6 game after I drop 2 times and it was lagging hard sometime due to me or my oponents. One of these game was a race of who will finish the others before and I lost this one two.It was a pure shitty day with bad luck and more I was loosing more I loose my concentration . So at the end I should do something else. And the cherry on the sunday was my last game a 50minute game against a zerg, I was dominating all the game,he was just surviving and I finish him.I got the victory screen,I come back on battle net and it says that im disconected.I reconnect and saw that my victory was not take in count . I was so pist off. But you know I think this happens to everybody at one time .

I am gonna tell you an advice that I took directly from Poker. Obviously, the stakes here are much lesser in SC2 (ladder points) than they are at poker (money) but the logic still stands. (There is much in common with poker and Starcraft...)
Losing, and/or long sessions can cause you to derive from your optimal strategy mindset. This can cause you to play differently, play more agressively ore defensively when you normally wouldn't, etc. When playing poker, this is called going on tilt and I believe it applies to most competitons, games, etc.
Take a break or think about why you are losing until you're re-focused and into that optimal strategy mindset again. The only other way to overcome this is to disregard the outcome of your matches. Losing streaks will happen and are inevitable.
watch the replays, see what could improve , improve , win.
Should be the time to reflect on where you can improve from replays. You'll never stop learning and it will be a break from game play. Don't stress from a loss, those are the ones where you can see what could of been done better. From there you'll be stronger.
Don't you know how to gamble? You never stop when you're winning. :D
Atleast that's how I play, after loss streaks I usually play some custom games.
On a loss streak yesterday I went from rank 12 in my division to rank 75
If your just losing because your playing against a good player.. Keep going. Best practice youll get all day..
If your losing because your getting frustrated and playing stupid... Go get some sun.
Play melee / custom games maps.
It relieves all the obnoxious brain stress. Just play some fun, "nobody cares" games like tower defense or bunker wars then you'll be fresh to come stomp again :-)
usually if I lose that many in a row I go to sleep because it generally means I'm too sleepy to keep playing
take a break man, grab a drink, go watch tv, exercise, go hang out with some friends, cook some dinner, anything to keep ur mind off it and come back refreshed when u want to have another crack, makes a world of difference, speaking from experience
I'm actually on a losing streak myself atm. I am 8-17 the past 25 games. I got early rushed a few times, over macro'd a few times, and lost a few really long games where I couldn't pull out the victory. For a time, I went on a 9 game streak and felt VERY confident facing any race. After this losing streak, its almost as I have a mental block and can't seem to break through. I think a practice partner or two would really help out, but for the time, I am just very frustrated. I went from just above 500 (diamond), now to mid 300's. I know the points don't mean much, but its still frustrating to get beat over and over.
