I love how clueless people are because they never use toss air. Pheonix "counter" vikings in that they beat them in 1v1 by a margin, for something like 25 gas more expensive. Also if he's going banshees he won't have any vikings until he see's pheonix so naturally he's in trouble. They also do about twice the DPS again banshees than stalkers do, not to mention having a faster speed. However, stalkers are extremely versatile and can obviously hit ground. It's easier to warp in a bunch of stalkers as a reactionary plan. I do however, think that the only reason people are having so much success is that the banshee's are getting outnumbered a lot. If you've ever seen 25 roaches vs 20 roaches you end up with like 15-20 roaches to 0. So the count makes a lot of difference. Something like banshee marauder crushes stalkers cost-wise and I can definitely see something like pheonix zealot sentry being used to early game against that kind of combo. I'm not sure if it's worth investing in air instead of going for storm and feedback, though.
Phoenix deal about 2.5x DPS a stalker does vs Banshees (ignoring cost). They can also snipe Mules.

The Phoenix will own the banshees, which will force the terran to make vikings to either save his banshees or keep you from killing too many SCV's.. this means that, assuming you are even or ahead in bases, your ground army will be bigger. A phoenix will beat a viking 1v1; the problem is that the vikings outrange them HARD, so you probably need to outnumber the vikings in order to win.
This is true however phoenix are one of the fastest units in the game this will mitigate that, but also it really applies in a defensive situation since there's no guarantee he's going to have phoenix in the front lines. I'm not sure I play against enough banshee protoss to really comment on this specifically.
