I don't know about that, Liverpool was probably the better team but football happened. City is also at the same level, if not more at peak performance.

I re-watched the game highlights and it's funny how it looks like Barça completely dominated the game. Liverpool got themselves a ton of good situations but didn't create many good chances. Every time Salah or Mané got the ball I was scared, and they won almost all their 1on1s but in the end they only had 1 good chance each.

For me, the way Luis Suarez destroyed Madrid 5-1 is something else. He's been the true game changer. Apart from you know who else with the yellow shirt lol.

Liverpool will never have the strenght to pull this one back, as they have been and still are playing tiring matches in their league.

Hoping at least the final is a good match with fair calls for both sides. The effect a foul or a card have in a match is underrated and often ignored by the regular peeps, that's what they take advantage of. Also other calls that if happened to one side in the start would have been called, but for the other not, is pretty sad.

Not the worst players in the world by any means, but Barcelona could do much better than those 2, they'll maybe show a much better performance on other teams but as of today, in Barcelona, they are not worthy of their place in this team.

I think Dembele will stay. he had some good moments and goals this season and he is still young.

But probably Coutinho will be out, he is playing with no energy and fans are tired of him.

Messi before his goal was the worst player on pitch statistically. Lost the ball the most 19 times on the pitch, so outside of his freekick and his "ball hit me and goes in" i don't get his praise either.

Saurez really roughed up the back 4 though, getting into the heads of everyone being Suarez so fair play to him on that. Clearly was no love lost there. Other than that the only other Barca player who played extremely well was Ter Stegen because he seems to have evolved such a cool head now on top of arguably being the best keeper on the planet right now.

Feel a bit sad for Scouse but then i don't because they have been able to keep their best players on the pitch all season long and now its catching up with them. No Keita, no Arnold, no Firminho and their team is just way weaker. Having an amazing first 11 only takes you so far in this game now due to how much physical requirements are needed. Their is a reason Messi is "back to his best" one might say, because he has played the least amount of games ever in a long time. Ronaldo was the same, basically was "afk" for the first 6 months of a season on Madrid's last few champs league wins.

Bayern shipped Kroos to Madrid a few years back. Now they shipped Vidal to Barcelona. Both times I felt they let the wrong players go and it surely looks that way.

In the first half he had a few good runs, and then he was surrounded most of the time. It wasn't until Liverpool had to score at 3-0 that he got some real space to do some magic. Also, as a forward if you score 2 goals you had a great game. Especially with that 2nd goal x) Maybe not a 10/10 like I saw in some post game analyses, but not far. He took a decent 1-0 tie into a heavily favorable result.

I don't think there's much to be said about Liverpool's player choices. Like Klopp said at the end, they had a great performance but they go back home with a 3-0. They were better than Barça overall... With Firminho they'd have one less midfielder, maybe they wouldn't have dominated that much. Arnold wouldn't have stopped Alba (and Salah didn't need him to win the right side duels), and they were better without Keita in the 2nd half. Tough game to analyze as a coach haha

Its not just saying x did better than y in that game. Its fact Gomez played his first 90 minutes since being out for 5 months injured. Arnold has been their set piece taker all season from corners to freekicks so he isn't just a right back and he isn't better defensively but way better offensively. Keita is also clearly someone they needed this game a midfielder with a goal, out of the 4 they played, he was by far the best and in a rich vein of form that is why i said that. Firminho would have done the exact same work load as Winjaldum in that position (Fkn Winjaldum striker lol, guy scored less than Milner this season!!) and offered way more offensively. That is why i said what i did, Liverpool fans would say the same thing as well. Klopp should have went for it in the 50-60th minute and bought someone offensive on or just Firminho on by then and really gambled. Instead he thought he might get a goal or probably lose 1-0 which isn't bad. Instead a bit of luck and he loses game 3-0 thinking what could have been.

Another season goes and another trophy-less season for Klopp and Liverpool.

It's easy to say after it's over though. Until that 2-0, it was a clear 1-1 game I probably wouldn't have changed a thing as Klopp either. After the 3-0, they "went for it" like you said and could have conceded 2 or 3 more. Strategically speaking, it made sense to keep doing what they were doing. It happened that they received a goal while they were completely dominating the game, tough luck. Not really Klopp's fault.

Changing one player for them would not have opened them up that much though. Firminho for Winjaldum offers them 100x more going forward with hardly anything less going backwards though. Liverpool team like Klopp said, play the same way all the time, just different players sometimes go into those positions. That is why they should have put on the likes of Firminho earlier, if they bought Shaqiri on then they would have proper been going for it and what you say probably could have happened but Firminho swap would not have changed them much defensively but gained so much more offensively.

I dont believe klopp has done anything wrong. If his team had taken their chances everoyne would hail him as a genius.

They pretty much confined barca most of the game and created several clear cut chances. Who could do that without saying it was a fluke.

Issue is though for me, outside of Mane and that Salah and Firminho miss at the end, all the chances fell to the likes of Milner who is not supposed to be in the box or running onto shots as that isn't his game. That is my gripe.

Barça defended well, with a lot of people in the box. It's hard for everybody to break this kind of defense. Years ago people were saying a bus is a counter to Barça's tiki-taka, they need a plan B blah blah. Turns out, it's a counter to anything if done well.

This is one of the best seasons I remember from Pique. In adittion Lenglet has been incredible, Jordi Alba as awesome as always. Vidal passion reminds me to Puyol or Mascherano (I miss them). And of course Ter Stegen is the best.

It is so weird for me when the best part of the Barcelona is the defense, haha.

They aren't playing tiki-taka at all anymore? Barça is still a team that likes to have the ball, but they are far more composed when they don't. You don't really see Barça with 80% ball control anymore.

I think they lost a big part of what made that style great. They don't press high anymore (difficult with Coutinho and Messi on the sides), they don't pass the ball very long, they try through balls much more often (can be deadly but it's a low chance thing), and they really don't mind sitting back and counter-attacking. They still like to start plays from their defense/GK cleanly, and they're still good at 1-2 combinations but it's really far from Pep or Luis Enrique's time imo.

In a way it's understandable given how demanding that system was and how much older the players are now. But they should try to rejuvenate the team instead of adapting their playstyle. Hopefully next year with de Jong + Arthur it'll be different.

was just another case of Barcelona struggling and being saved by Messi. they were in real trouble.

They would have kept Vidal if they knew beforehand that Tolisso would get injured by Volland on the second day of the season and not play another minute.

I don't mean that Volland intentionally injured him, just happened in a 1on1 between those 2

Messi was fantastic all the way through imo, I immediately felt that this was one of his 'on'-days. (not that he's off that often, but seeing that I don't normally watch la liga and only see him for argentina/in CL, there have been some games where he was far from stellar.) I mean yeah he loses the ball when he gets swarmed by 4 different people covering all angles, but that he gets swarmed like that is a testament to how good he is more than him losing the ball in that situation indicates that he's having an off day.

Honestly I think this year's ballon d'or is the least debatable for like.. almost a decade? Like last year modric got a total of 753 out of a possible 1056 points. (176 journalists giving 1-6 points to different players.) Before that Ronaldo won with 946. Going back before that they have a different calculation system so you can't compare but like.. I can't understand Messi getting much less than 1050 points this year. There really aren't any other candidates.
