It's a mindset thing. Like Russ is not a great defender by any stretch, but watch if he gets switched on a big he almost takes it personally and fights for every inch. I think that mindset of competing or not on that end does not really change. i disagree with the last sentence. DD could decide to fight as hard as Lowry or Wright or Van Vleet. DD's effort this pre-season has been better. I wonder if he'll keep up his defensive effort during games where he does a lot of work on the offensive end.
I mean, of course it's a question of effort!
A couple of seasons back I watched him harass LeBron for a whole game and he did a GREAT job. A couple times last year after what's his name called out his effort on D he stepped it up for a couple of games too. Other than that, he just looks disinterested in even trying when the ball's in the D-Zone. Would be nice if he took as much pride in his complete game the way guys like Leonard and Lebron do.

Here is a look at Derozan's impact on the Raptors defense.
Its no surprise Derozan's Defensive Real Plus Minus is better than less than a handful of starting SGs in the NBA. He is ranked ~25th in DRPM for starting SGs.
As lazy as Derozan's effort is on defense i'd have to say Andrew Wiggins and Arron Afflalo are even lazier.

Yes but Derozan is an 8-year vet who has, to his credit, improved his game EVERY single off-season. You'd think some of that effort would go into his defensive responsibilities. Even still, if he just stops forcing up terrible shots and dishes out a few more passes throughout the game, he'll hopefully use less energy than all his fancy ISO attempts use, and maybe just naturally be better on D. He's gotta tire out doing all that shit he does to get his baskets. He's a professional athlete and all but... He's still a human, not a robot.
Effort on D... It's probably about priorities more than anything. Do you want to win? Or do you want an easy max contract?
At just 3 years in, it isn't surprising to me that Wiggins hasn't been convinced that the effort is worth it when he can easily score his 20/game and still get his max contract. Especially on a bad team where his effort on D will barely make a difference anyway. If he wants to be great, and this goes for Derozan too, he's gonna need to turn that Defensive game around.
One of the beautiful things about the NBA is that the truly greatest players get their rings, and the truly greatest players almost always excel on offense AND defense. Lebron, Kobe, Jordan.... hell, even teams. Golden State was a defensive powerhouse BEFORE Steve Kerr came in and changed their offensive schemes, and even today they rank as one of the league's best defenses.

the break was more like what a baseball player gets on a feet first slide gone wrong.
most baseball players recover fully, but its a long way back and baseball players don't really stress their ankle area the way an NBA player does.
i think a big factor will be if there is nerve damage.

Joba Chamberlain had a similar break except 2 bones broke through the skin and he lost a lot of blood. He was back in 4 months. I'd wait until he is assessed before declaring Hayward's season over.
Moises Alou, same thing. 4 months to recover from an ankle break about the same as Haywards.
the fact they can stick Hayward on a plane tonight is good sign. If he had some kind of substantial blood loss along with a large laceration they couldn't stick him on a plane.

one of the most memorable ones that i've witnessed was marcus lattimore from southern carolina. guy was a legit stud RB but tore his knees twice and never played a down in the NFL.
