Contrary to the out-of-place opinion of sharkie, the clear winner in this sport is Japan. They had their best total ever with 12 medals surpassing their result from 2000 and 1992 of 10 medals. It's clear the work put into the preparation of Tokyo 2020 is paying of though I don't expect a better result in Japan. France had a good performance but disappointing in regards to the expectations. With 5 medals they have the honorable 2nd place but they had an objective of 6 with the potential to go for 8 or 9. Korea still can't find many athletes to come back to their former performances. Brazil was my pick for 4 to 6 medals and the only explanation I can find for their failure is the lack of support from the federation. The last (strong) nation of Judo in Russia had an OK performance but I hate their judo who look wrestling so meh. Special mentions to Kosovo with their gold medal, the first in their history.

A lot of the problems we have in the Olympics come from lack of funding, but the government actually invested in Judo and Swimming for this event. Brazil simply lacks a winning culture, we're not very competitive and a lot of our athletes and coaches are content with just getting to the finals. Sarah Menezes, for example, who got a gold in London barely looked alive during her fights. The chief of the swimmer's delegation said everything was cool and that the legacy Brazil is gonna get from swimming in these Olympics is "public warmth"...I think my point has been made. Edit: our systematic failure to establish ourselves as a major country in the Olympics is absolutely the government's fault. Too little money goes into sports, only football gets promoted etc. But at least in these two sports(swimming and judo) and at least in these olympics, the fault lies with the athletes/coaches.

"We played a creative game. We had many opportunities on goal. We showed a lot of heart. We came back from a goal down. I’m very proud of this team." “We played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly, firmly believe that.” "Sweden dropped back. They didn't want to open play." http://www.latimes.com/sports/olympics/la-sp-oly-rio-2016-hope-solo-doesn-t-hold-back-after-u-s-1471031683-htmlstory.html Welcome to the mean world of win-at-all-costs sports there Hopey baby. Its a BO1 knockout game. Shut up and go home. Does anyone think the 1980 US hockey team was better than the Soviet Union team? Shut up Solo and go home.
