It's 25 degrees C here and I'm watching hockey. That feels weird.

Sweden behind 0-1

TSN.ca in Canada also provides really good english language coverage.

http://www.tsn.ca/hockey-canada/mens-worlds

i wonder if Auston Matthews and Patrick Laine can still impact their draft placement at this event.

with 19 minutes left in the 3rd period Kazhakstan and Russia were tied 4-4

Canada is probably the big favorite but is there any other country who might take it?

i dont think there is a "big favourite" in this event. especially with a 1-game win format. in a BO7 results are a lot more reliable.
also, it depends on who gets eliminated from the playoffs in the NHL.

i'd say Sweden, Canada, and Russia all have approximately a 25% chance to win. no idea between these 3 teams who the most favoured team is. Whoever is the best of these 3 teams i'd say they must be considered a slight favourite.

USA, Finland, and the Czech Republic share the other 25% chance to win. out of those 3 teams i have no idea who has the best chance.

in about 10 years i predict USA and Russia will be the dominant hockey powers.

Sure, but I'm not convinced it would help. If you do it after the Stanley cup, many players would be weeks or even months into their offseason. Not to mention it would be in the middle of summer. And during or just before the NHL season might not be a good idea either.

I disagree with this. With the new eligibility rules in the CHL it only seems to push Canada farther and Euro back. 10 Years from now in the Hockey landscape will more likely look similar to how it does now but with better Goaltending for CDN. And with state sponsored doping in Russia starting to look like a huge problem it will likely hurt their development as a power. The USA having 1 good prospect every 3 years doesn't really make me believe they will be much more than a tier 2 team for a while..

you make some interesting points. however,

Canada is going down. Except for a brief time from 1981 to 1987 Canada has been the best hockey nation on earth. and its coming to an end soon. For the first time ever, more US kids play hockey than Canadian kids. The NCAA is slowly becoming a development system on par with the OHL, WHL and the Q. Combine this with the KHL flourishing and the Russians are Americans will be the best hockey nations.

Even now, the Pittsburgh Penguins just chewed up and spit out the team that won the Prez Trophy by 11 points. The Penguins have 10 americans on the team. 10.

the last 7 years or so the US has slightly outperformed Canada in the world juniors. the US will continue to improve and Canada will continue its slow decline.

the NHL season is too long to fit in thie IIHF event. i kinda like it how it is because i find the NHL pretty boring and these IIHF events like the women's, U20, and Men's gives me some good hockey to watch with no rhombuses or isosceles triangles or trapezoids on the ice.

regarding the 2016 event so far: the big 3 have all stumbled a bit. Sweden lost to the Czechs ; Canada was tied with Germany going into the 3rd period ; Russia was tied with Khazakstan going into the 3rd period..

The last 10 years Canada has 5 Golds, 2 Silver, and a bronze in the WJC. And it is fast becoming a pointless international tournament that TSN hypes up for ratings. Lots of Canada's eligible players don't play because they are in the NHL already ie. McDavid, Ekbald, Domi, Stome. There are 11 Canadians on the Penguins, including the MVP of that series which nobody can deny was Matt Murray. On the same point though that Bonino and Kessel line was fire in that game 6 and did win that 1 game, most of those guys are depth/filler guys not superstars. and the KHL is not thriving it is actually suffering financially and talent wise. It's top 2 Russian players want to leav, not to mention are NHL castoffs. All the KHL is at this point is an NHL castoff list.

that has been true for decades. Gretzky dominated the event at age 16 and never played in it again. Lindros dominated the event at age 17 and never played again. Mario Lemieux etc etc... the only reason Crosby played in it at 18 was because of an NHL strike.

Actually Canada is 4,2 and 1 in the past 10. My comment was that in 10 years USA will be better. The Canadians who won in the World Juniors 10 and 9 years ago will be in the greatly diminished parts of their career.

in the last 7 years Canada has 1 gold. Finns 2, USA 2, Sweden 1 , and Russia 1. When is the last time Canada only had 1 gold medal during a 7 year stretch of this event? like 1975 when they didn't send a team. the last 7 years has been intriguing TV and worthy of the high ratings TSN generates.

With the parity of this event its hardly a "Canada only" TSN event.

here is the history here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IIHF_World_Under-20_Championship_medalists

and regarding this event any one of 6 teams have a shot at winning it.

Sorry I Was 1 Gold off... if you go 11 years then it's 5.
1 Gold in 7 years is exactly the reason for the changes to the CHL eligibility rules like I said early. With restrictions to Euro/USA players it will only help the developement of young players. And from 1998 - 2004 Canada had 0 Golds. 10 years from then though look at us now.. I'm all for parity in international events and hope that other countries like Germany, Austria and what not can continue to develope and compete... Even S.Korea is got a team together for the olympics but I just don't think the competition is gonna come from the same place as you. Finland and Sweden seem more realistic to me, but at the same time I don't see Canada falling from the list of the most dominate.

i see Canada's minor hockey leagues eroding due to increased expenses and concerns about head injuries. Canada has won 1 medal in the last 5 years of the world juniors.

here is a starting look at canadian boys hockey... enrollment is way down and Hockey Canada is in panic mode.
https://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorialopinion/2012/01/04/the_future_looks_bleak_for_canadian_minor_hockey.html

Kuznetsov, Orlov, and Ovechkin are set to join team Russia on Saturday.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2016/05/11/alex-ovechkin-evgeny-kuznetsov-and-dmitry-orlov-join-russia-for-world-championships/

This will be Ovechkin's 12th world championships and Kuznetsov's 4th. at the end of this addition Russia will still have room to add 1 more skater and 1 more goalie. Ovechkin has won gold at this event 3 times.

Hungary had their first win in 77 years at the World Championships. Congrats!

Sweden only outshot Norway 38-25 and only won 3-2. The game was in doubt in the final 2 minutes. Sweden lost to the Czech Republic 4-2 earlier in this event. Of the "big 3" Sweden looks the most vulnerable. They rank 6th in the power rankings so far and they've earned the low standing.
http://www.iihfworlds2016.com/en/news/power-rankings-14-may/

All the other results went pretty much as expected. This event heats up on Tuesday.

its different every event, imo.
because its 1 game eliminations you'll see inconsistencies every where.

in the 2002 Olympics Sweden made Canada look as bad as they've ever looked in international competition in the preliminary round.. i mean.. Sweden chewed 'em up and spit 'em out. then Sweden got eliminated by Belarus.

so you just never know. that's how i see it. Sweden could destroy every team they play from here on in .. and i'd only be mildly surprised.

its hilarious when the winning goal goes in with 10 guys standing in front of the net.

And lost to the Danes as a Swiss fan, that made me sad.

On the other side, Switzerland can't complain after loosing to Kazakhstan and Norway...

Germany will finish ahead of the USA in teh preliminary round. The prelim round consists of 7 games played so its more than just 1 fluke game.

Germany ahead of USA after 7 games.

Although I'm Canadian I'm no longer really a "fan" of the NHL/Canadian brand of hockey. Neither is Wayne Gretzky.

I'm cheering for Finland. Leo Komarov is my favourite player. They're probably going to get chewed up by the Canadian defensive system meat grinder today though.

So how is that meat grinder working out?

on the other hand this loss allows Can and Rus to be in different sides of the playoff tree. Coincidence?

i love seeing Komarov agitate the agitator and draw a penalty from Marchand. although it didn't show up on the score sheet Komarov was fucking awesome today.

u mad bro? yo dawg , whats with this hostility-city attitude bro. its a fun event man. relax and enjoy the games. that are not on that tiny 200X85 NHL ice.

the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) have a taller starting line up than the Toronto Raptors(NBA). If that doesn't scream for a bigger ice surface i don't know what does, bro.

dude as a born Russian watching worlds every year since 1991 i'm telling you they mean nothing. Take it or leave it.

EDIT: PS. There was no NHL broadcast in Russia in 90ies, and i've been live to a lot of games in Moscow. So this is not because i didn't see enough.

better than the World Cup in August they sure look like they mean something when the players celebrate or cry when they lose.

he is just angry and probably needs a hug.

i'm in canada and many of my canadian friends view the event as a breath of fresh air from the NHL boring style of play. So some Canadians like it. TSN, a canadian sports network, puts in a decent amount of cash to produce a solid show and they televise almost every game.

so this event means something to canadians and it sure looked like it meant something to Crosby and the boys last year when they won.

i'm just saying what i know from the players and viewers.
ofc "nothing" is exaggeration, but really, this is not a big deal. Not saying that its not enjoyable to watch tho.

i'm glad you've adjusted your untenable position and acknowledged how ridiculous it was.

if i recall correctly you were ranting and raving in the 2015 thread taking the event very seriously with a slew of negative adjectives. you're contridicting yourself. its like you're going from one extreme to another.

Today's the big day. Sweden can redeem themselves if they get past Canada, but I don't see that happening. Czech republic vs USA should be very interesting, with the czechs kicking ass like the have been.

off the top of my head canada played without
toews, subban, price, smith, keith, doughty, getzlaf, benn, tavares, bergeron, seguin

every country deals with lots of "no" responses from its best players

There is more than 80 Swedes in the NHL dawg. Canada is missing an all-star team of guys. Every team deals with star players saying "no". Also, teams use their star junior players .. guys like Laine and Matthews.

When Norway, Switzerland, and Latvia all give Sweden big, big trouble in 1 event.. Sweden's got problems.

nope, everyone plays in the Olympics unless they are injured. In 3.5 months there will be something in Canada called the "World Cup of Hockey" that will feature the best players. Everyone is in on that as well. All the games will be on the smaller NHL ice surface though.

Hm... pity
Europe (audience) cares a lot more about the World Championship (the thing thats going on now) than the World Cup of Hockey.
Me for one didn't even know that is World Cup thing is going until i read about 3 weeks ago on TL.net somewhere. And I'm quite interested in hockey

its more like the NHLPA Cup than the World Cup.
1 of the teams is a team of under 23 year old players North American players. there is also a "team Europe" that consists of all European players not in Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

These teams were invented in order to get as many NHL players involved in the event as possible. Its main purpose is to raise money for the NHLPA and scare the Olympic organizers into making a better deal with the NHL.

Hopefully , the arenas are half full.... this IIHF event and hte Olympics is enough. imo, we don't need another event.

I have to ask, why do they not wait with the World Championship until the Stanley Cup is over?
Or maybe do it all in February and negotiate a break with the NHL like for the Olymics?

interesting question!

its historical. Originally, the IIHF and NHL did not get along at all. They sort of hated each other. So the IIHF scheduled the World Championships right after the European leagues are finished their seasons and didn't care about the NHL. I'm assuming the KHL season is also finished. The NHL is the only league that goes on until the middle of June. The NHL going until Mid-June is pretty dumb.. but that's how it is.

Having the World Championships go from late June and into July would be ridiculous.

Finland is getting fucked by the officials.

Every time a Finn has a choice between trying to stick it under the crossbar and a low hard shot to create a rebound they elect to take a shot that creates a rebound. great team play by Finland.

Someone on Russia needs to stop figure skating and stand in front of the net. They could use a coach like Ken Hitchcock. See how Finland has someone standing in front of the net? like that.

Finland has given up 1 goal to Canada and Russia.

If Finland wins tomorrow they become the first nation to ever win the U18s the U20s and the World's in 1 year. Since NHL players joined the Olympics Finland has more medals than any other country. What's the population of Finland any way? 200 million people right?

no problem dude. other than the NHL ... its a great sport.

Notice both Canada's and USA's power play features a player planting himself right in front of the goalie. It may be a painful thing to do. But, it works.

the refereeing is better than Canadian Junior hockey but worse than the NHL. Its a really tough game to call and stuff is going to get missed.

1 or 2 nights ago in an NHL playoff game a Penguin high sticked a Lightning player in a bizarre way. It created a breakaway chance for the Penguins. No call. Calls get missed in the NHL all the time and they are the best referees in the world. The high stick in question was a very hard call to make.

Every game Canada and Finland has been in the referees have been solid but not perfect.

Finland stomps its 2 toughest opponents ( canada and usa) and then loses to Upper Boldovia.
goes to show you anything can happen in any 1 game.

its nice to see that Ovechkin is not at this event. i hope he wins the stanley cup. he deserves it.

So we actually beat the finns... unfortunately I didn't have time to watch (and expected us to lose anyway), but what I heard they played really well.

There were a lot of critical voices regarding the swiss coach after the olympics (where we absolutely bombed), I guess that's gonna stop for a while now.

its hard to be overly critical in stuff like the olympics or these other IIHF events because its a 1 game elimination situation.
1 hot goalie and and an entire great game played by 15+ skaters can be nullified.

I know it's a physical and intense game but there are so many unnecessary penalties. The swedes did that vs russia. A minor and a double minor within the first 3 min or so. So frustrating to watch.

imo its the best hockey series ever played. it was an 8 game series. 4 in Canada. 4 in the SOviet Union at the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the West.
the final game score was 6-5... imo the best game ever played.

regarding USA v. Sweden.
that was the most one-sided, for the losing team, 6-0 games i`ve ever seen.
USA carried the play a lot...
