There's no way to generate the income required to become a CL level team, so it becomes a feeder team (just like Austrian or Swiss or even Portugese teams), and these games will just be close games because of it. Today, you don't see top scorers in the Eredivisie hang around for years (eg v. Nistelrooij scored 38 in '99 and stayed for 3 years after, Litmanen scored 36 in '94 and stayed for 6). Competition from Feyenoord was partially replaced by better AZ and Twente, as Feyenoord would make about 1 in 8 league wins before 2000. Together with Chelsea B, I would even say the top 6 is closer now than it was back in the day, as real top players are instabought, even by midleague teams (eg. Bony). I don't think you need more than 1 rival in order to ensure you try to perform optimally (R.Madrid vs Barca was fine for years). | ||

Blaming TV money would be fine a couple years ago, but now we find ourselves getting knocked out by Austrian teams and we are collecting less coefficient points than the Belgium league.
