Atletico Madrid also made back to back finals I think? With Falcao? Something close to that anyway. That plus the CL final of last year puts them in pot 1 as well.

Liverpool presumably have an awful ranking after their prolonged absence and are likely to get some tough teams in their group stage. The same will increasingly apply to Manchester United the longer they stay out of Europe and that is presuming they ever become a good team again.

UEFA Champions League points system First qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points Second qualifying round elimination – 1 point Group stage participation – 4 points Group stage win – 2 points Group stage draw – 1 point Round of 16 participation – 4 points Since 2009/10 clubs have been awarded an additional point if they reach the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final. NB Points are not awarded for elimination in the third qualifying round or play-offs, since those clubs move to the UEFA Europa League and are awarded points for participation in that competition. UEFA Europa League points system First qualifying round elimination – 0.25 points Second qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points Third qualifying round elimination – 1 point Play-off elimination – 1.5 points Group stage win – 2 points Group stage draw – 1 point Since 2009/10, clubs have been guaranteed a minimum of two points if they reach the group stage and are awarded an additional point if they get to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final. *Penalty shoot-outs do not affect the calculation system. Coefficient calculation Clubs' coefficients are determined by the sum of all points won in the previous five years, plus 20% of the association coefficient over the same period (33% before 2009). So for winning Europa League clube will usually get around 25-30 point, Champions League 35-40.

Arsenal really need to step it up this year. They're in danger of falling into pot 2 which means they'll keep getting hard groups.

I think it's because apart from points there is no incentive to there well for big club that had worse last season or got only 3rd place in CL group.

If you had the likes of say Atletico Madrid winning the Europa league 3 ouf ot 4 seasons, but the point system be even lower. That means when the likes of AC Milan or (i use this as an example) Arsenal fall into the Europa League they will get better draws in that competition due to their pedigree from the Champions League. Even though they never do well in that competition (at least in the last 5 seasons as an example). Points maybe a bit to close to the Champions league but you have to remember they are different competitions in which most of the teams who qualify are the same each year. If they make the step up to the Champions League they have some starter points to play with.
