The only reason why people think that he's a semi-decent goalkeeper is because he plays for Barça, the only club that he won't actually do any goalkeeping work. And he won't renew his contract? Where will he go to? A Championship division club? I don't think he will last long in the Premiership, Serie A or Bundesliga.

What a greedy person, he should be grateful he was born in the right place at the right time and be part of this team.

I would say he's most likely gonna go to some rusian/whatever bad team to get paid a lot, like other old dudes are doing before retiring... Or just retire. That's what I would do anyway.

Fact is now though the way his team plays hes either sitting around reading newspapers or hes being tested by a one on one or some ridiculous situation most keepers never expect to find themselves in. Hes a decent shotstopper, has the reflexes and generally does a legit job. Cant really say hes the best around because his team is so good he doesnt get tested often enough. But lets face it, hes got Zamora trophy after zamora trophy in a league which has Iker Casilllas and gets about a 10th of the recognition. He must be doing something right, and its just not being at Barcelona. Maybe that does bother him ? Maybe he doesnt give a shit anymore. Its perfectly possible. Again as is for most of the palyers in their team he fits well. His distribution is excellent and in the modern game and in Barca in particular when your playing sweeper as often he does you need it. I dont think any other keeper is as good a passer as he is. Atleast not of the top of my head. Problem is thats not his job, and no one will ever give him any due credit for it. Which isnt really fair. Just ask an Arsenal fan how they tear their hair out everytime the Pol they have between the poles kicks it up the field with miserable accuracy. But yeah it does seem like he wants to cash in. So whatever works. Any other team may not have such a problem but Barca would have a hard time replacing him, immediately.

His early years were pertty mediocre, even Ill attest to that but he was suceeding people like Bonano, Vitor Baia and that guy with the warp paint Rustu and still looked comparitively competent. He is certainly in his early years Barca werent spoilt for choice. Very good analysis of the situation. May I add that, even thought I do feel grateful to him, because he has had some spectacular saves for us in the past, I just never thought he is THAT good?. Is like a friend and I were saying, he's won the zamora, because he plays on a team where he's the first man, and the other 10 are possibly the best, or top3-5-10 in their position worldwide. Maybe we didn't appreciated him enough. And yes, there's no other keeper that plays the ball with his feet like Valdes does, we might have some "trouble" trying to find a replacement for him. Maybe give a chance to one of the canteranos? maybe find someone else out there? We'll see. We got 1.5years until he leaves, but I'm sure they will sell him before that, they are probably going for the cash now that he just "refused" to even talk about a renewal. Bye Valdes.

Stekelenburg! Very underrated keeper imo. Great with his feet, started out the first few years of his footballing carreer as a field player. Any Ajax keeper has to be great with his feet. Anyway, I think he was one of the absolute best goalkeepers in the World Cup 2010.

On the Valdes situation i think it's good to freshen things up, and the rumours were coming out earlier this week that Liverpool have been sniffing around Valdes, so i guess this is the reason why. Im sure Barca would prefer to cash in on him and buy a new keeper. Just though for a second, for those people who think Valdes is "good", how about if they had a Casials/Buffon/Cech in their goal, how much BETTER would Barca be?...

There's also a whole generation of young german goalkeepers who are specifically trained to be good with the ball (ter Stegen, Zieler, Neuer, Adler, Trapp.. sorry if I forgot any one).

I think Casillas has been the best goalkeeper this last years. But I think he would not fit in Barcelona playstyle, He has great reflexes and he is great with the hands, but he is pettry bad with the feets, almost any other Top goalkeeper is best that him in that aspect. And Barcelona needs a golakeeper like Valdes that help the team in his play.

Also i think they will need to find some good young keepers to groom that might be ready. Already said people like Neuer and Stekelenburg are the types they need, but i see on Stekelenburgbeing available. However reports in England suggest Stekelenburg is off to Fulham ^_^

I can understand his will to try another country but announcing that in January when his contract ends in June 2014 is just stupid! Concerning his level, as some people said before, I think he's great for Barcelona, and among the top goalkeepers of these last years. He makes some mistakes every year, like every goalkeeper (just look at Casillas this season), but most of the time he's very good and saved the Barca many times by the past (hello 2006 CL finals). So if he starts to mess up, we'll be stuck between Valdés playing and the public boo'ing him or having Pinto playing and regret it after 2 games ![]() The young goalkeepers of the cantera aren't really good, Oier is meh, Masip is better but hasn't been playing a lot for the second team, and the others are too young. So I guess they will have to find a new one, and more likely a spanish one, so maybe Reina, De Gea or Guaita.
