Friend gave some news after a few weeks, thought we could go to the metal bar to discuss stuff instead of texting news, and for the next 2 weeks it's only brutal death metal, hard-core, heavy dub, etc. which neither of us are too fond of (at best). There's a folk punk band which sounds interesting, but it's tonight so it's probably too late, plus it'd mean missing Mafia. Dammit, for once that I go out.

Of course it often takes time to find applications for scientific findings. My point was I personally put the vast majority of value on using knowledge as opposed to having knowledge. I'm having trouble understanding how happiness can be an intrinsic value while feeling good about something is extrinsic value. I kinda believe that all good value comes from improving your life and the lives of others (as general as that sounds) and having knowledge doesn't really do that. If it changes the way you behave for the better, that's using that knowledge. I don't like the whole "it just is" thing in general. even academics use their knowledge to further their knowledge kinda thing. The Nazis dismissed entire fields of theoretical physics (relativity and quantum mechanics) for being incomprehensible and of no practical value (and the purge of Jewish scientists from German universities). End result is that Germany lost a massive edge in nuclear physics and, well. Value is subjective.

I thought "edge" in that context always meant that you held an advantage but I'm not sure.

Value is subjective. oh yeah all knowledge has the potential for value and one would be a fool to dismiss any knowledge because its not immediately useful. The negative result of them dismissing it did come from when others applied that knowledge tho.

So they had a potential advantage that was squandered. Oh, I meant in the nuclear field in particular. There ought to be potential within the deported/concentrated population in any case, but LT seemed to say that there were eminent physicists specifically, including in the nuclear field, amongst the Jewish people the Nazi dismissed.

Germany in the twenties and thirties was the premier intellectual capital of Europe in scientific fields, especially theoretical fields like quantum mechanics and relativity. most of the prominent physicists were German. The brain drain that resulted from Nazi ascendance completely crippled German scientific output during World War 2 (I think there were estimates then post war that Nazi Germany only utilized close to 20 percent of their potential scientific output, hello again that is because they also decide you can script the best and brightest from the university instead of using them, I got because he didn't respect abstract knowledge). And no coma, Germany was not nuked, but lost the opportunity to develop nuclear weapons of their own to use. The point being is that the study of knowledge for being useless or having no application is rather questionable. besides that happiness is inherently an intrinsic value, as we all react differently to different stimuli. one person made love a pizza and a person can hate it. The pizza has no inherent happiness value. Moreover, we can feel happiness without reacting to some external source, no? We do not need to interact with the material world to be happy.

Furthermore the Nazis discourage study of relativity and quantum mechanics as useless.
