Right, like i said we need people to push the academic boundaries, but their discoveries are "useless" if never applied. Not all value comes from use (in other words: not all value is instrumental value). Like intrinsic value? like feeling good about how much you know? I guess that's not entirely worthless. Can you give me another example?

The classic example of intrinsic value is when you ask why something is good and at some point one cannot come up with other answers than "it just is". Take you help someone carrying a heavy bag without any personal benifit whatsoever. Still we have the intuition that this is a good action. But why? It just is. There is no further reason than the good action itself. Now you may find a story that helping someone is not good in itself, but only good because it brings pleasure or whatever. But then you can ask what makes pleasure good. And you'll find it very difficult to give a story why pleasure is good, other than "it just is". (this may repeat itself a couple of times, but at some point you'll find something which's value you cannot derive from something else.) Edit: To give an example from tradition: Aristotle thought "happiness" (eudaimonia) is an intrinsic value that other values are derived from.

Similar with happiness: Happiness is valuable for its own sake (intrinsic value). Having a good dinner is only valuable for happiness' sake (extrinsic value). And its certainly true that knowledge has instrumental value. It is less obvious that it only has instrumental value. But it would not be a super crazy idea to believe that. (Even though, I take it, you don't fully hold this radical view) And tea is certainly awesome. Personally I'm a darjeeling fan.
