People here always whine about their EU counterparts hours being a lot less.

Eh, that's because older people tend to work less. Young guys who just graduated work 40 hours if they can find the job. As soon as people start getting kids the work hours get a lot lower.

Average work hours are pretty low though. I like that. The whole work to live, not live to work thing.

I mean sign me up

Also I'm taking a break from league (actually uninstalled...) and HotS but I wish I could play with you guys. I love that red is still playing :D

"Here's how you do a cristallography for X thing."

Yeah, cool. But what do you need to do a cristallography for?
That's the kind of stuff where it seems pointless because I don't have an interest in it specifically (I read a bit on quantic stuff, I'll never use it but it allows me to understand better when I come across it in articles, since otherwise "quantic" is mostly a buzzword for a bunch of people) and I don't know what else it's tied to/used for/related to.
So it's just a rock stuck somewhere in a plain all isolated.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

American work philosophy is pretty warped I find. My cousin went to go work there from England and says he basically works a lot longer hours but doesn't actually do any more work. I'd rather someone work for 4 hours solidly then go home than sit there for 8 hours being terribly inefficient with lots of breaks.

Haha well yea if you going into academics practicability is the last thing you need. In fact I think they purposely make sure no one in academics has interest in practical knowledge. Personally the practical is all I really cared about and well it's drastically different from the theory. Learning in maths how to solve DEs from fundamentals is largely a complete waste of time as all the application of it in the field are DEs that someone else has already found solutions for or you'll use some kind of modeling software to handle but hey I can solve some DEs by hand... fucking lovely aint it...

A desk job has a lot of downtime where you just arbing around not really working. Same with high school. Uni lectures tend to be 45 minute long cram sessions. Only breaks you get are when you walking to your next venue if you have a busy schedule. It's rather different to schooling.

Anyway first year is definitely a bit more challenging largely due to it being quite a leap from what you used to and them making it a bit harder to weed out people. After that you tend to get used to the schedule. Occasionally you'll have all nighters to pull every few weeks to finish up stuff but aside from that there's a fair amount of chilling to be done.

My first year felt way more than trivial than high school (though arguably that's because of the high school I went to) . 2nd year ramped up a lot though.

Maybe it's different because you went to medschool?
I imagine the 1st year of my uni should be pretty hard simply because they don't even do entrance exams so they have to find some other way to weed out troggzors.

@Prog, yeah I know what you mean with that (I actually have a lot of people like that in my class), but I myself do sometimes want to actually do shit with the things that I learned. Of course I also do it for just knowing all the things (otherwise I wouldn't be doing 2 studies).
I just kinda like both.

I'm of the opinion that knowledge without application is pretty useless. I appreciate what academics do to advance to total knowledge base etc. but if no one takes that knowledge and applies it to bettering society it might as well have not existed. I love learning and chose a field where I'll never be able to stop doing so but it will always be because i'm applying it to my work. either at my job or at home. knowledge is only power if you use it.

my fav BW customs include; Diplomacy, LOTR (the helms deep one i think?), golems, stacked cannon defense, Cat and Mouse, and the ghost one shot capture the flag one.

On the contrary, at lot of time discoveries are just ahead of their time and need to wait until they can be applied properly.

My hands start to hurt from typing/mousing and I'm not even the type of programmer that spend 12 hours a day typing away. Have to move over to trackball mouse and a smaller keyboard now.

first semester was the comparatively hardest so far, if only because the guy that did the weed-out type exam was a complete tool. i'd take entrance exams over that shit any day.

since then it's been good going
