there just isn't enough mobility in melee without those two things.being able to combo and half the damn game would be gone.

I mean technically Brawl does have more characters so PX's claim would be true. However I strongly suspect that you guys are talking about the professional scene, to which I am inclined to believe based off the context of your guy's post has much less variety thanks to Meta Knight.

L-cancelling is just a frame window before you land very much how most attacks are in fighting games. Wave dashing doesn't buffer.
There is no way to give a perfect reason to how to design games I don't like most ways of buffering is implements similar to my view on that good unit grouping makes RTS games worse.
