it's impossible to have a discussion with you when you say things like this

I don't mean its a sham sport as a sport. but rather that the college basketball implementation is a sham. the top athletes don't play college basketball to make money or pay for their education, they do so in order to get to the NBA and get drafted to make professional money.

for the students that are playing basketball for the sport itself, they often stay long enough to get a degree. and thats fine.

I absolutely hate the one and done rule. If they are ready to play in the NBA then let them. Worked out fine for LeBron (I mean obviously players aren't as good as him that young but I'm sure there are examples where this would have happened without the one and done rule). And if a kid goes into the NBA and fails it's no skin of the NCAA's nose.

its crazy because from playing the game, the parry itself is awesome and flashy, but the real impressive part is immediately following the parrying, the correct predictions leading to the kill are nuts. the parrying is crazy difficult, but its a pattern where if you know going into the move its something you have to do, its not impossible but taking that moment of precision and following it up perfectly is just nuts.

It's funny because at first I dismissed fighting games as being pure technical skills and no decision making involved. But the more I watched the more that I realized that for fighting games, you have to be a mastermind essentially to compete at the top level.

It's INSANE just how much thought can go into one match alone!

Now, I'm not all-in with everything Schofield says here(like, $650 in rent? that's on you bro, nobody forced you to live off campus), but keep in mind this is a full-ride athlete from Wisconsin, a premier, on the cusp of being nationally elite Big-10 school. Wisconsin is not Wyoming or East Carolina or Western Kentucky, etc.

I'm not going to trumpet the 'athletes need to get paid' argument, but you have a uninformed view on what it's actually like to be a scholarship athlete(god forbid one that isn't on a full-ride, or even a non-scholarship). Students on academic scholarships are receiving almost equivalent value, but have it far better off with what they can do(work, internships, social life), and those are who the athletes should actually be compared to(why would you ever compare them to the 'average' student going to school with no scholarship... those students have no scholarship for a reason, they did nothing valued as remarkable by the institution, I honestly don't care how arrogant that may come off sounding).

parrying as a system was flawed because there was nothing you could do to stop parrying, it would eventually lead to nothing but 50/50 guessing that was destroyed by buffering. capcom decided that buffering inputs would be a better direction than hard parrying. which is sweet because a lot of SSF4 tech and beyond grew from that buffered input decision. I'm not saying i don't miss parrying because its awesome and cool to watch, but i can see how its existence would eventually lead to a game being worse overall unless they made changes in other areas to account for it.

I mean 1100 a month might be rough, but its working minimum wage for 30 hours a week extra on top of the scholarship money. People on minimum wage also have to make decisions about whether they can afford a phone or a car. but they don't have the opportunity to get out the way a college education offers, or the NFL hope offers. their outlet is taking a second job part time to try to save up enough money to do something, and that's without paying for college.

i'm not saying they should be offered that little, but wisconsin might be handling it wrong, or Schofield might be handling it wrong. at UCF the athletes get a free meal plan for 3 semesters a year (fall, spring, and summer), 4k a year spending money on top of their housing paid for if they live in the nice new apartment style dorms. Its not the same or even right to imply that because wisconsin's methods are perhaps outdated that every university perceived as "below" them is even worse off.

i don't think its fair to say i have an uninformed opinion. I know what my school does. because i knew scholarship athletes. my roommate tutor'd one guy on the basketball team, and i currently live next to a couple linebackers who are really cool dudes and we've talked about it before. I'm certainly not completely informed. but i don't think any of us know the situation at every college in america.

And yea, the Daigo Parry video, after Justin ate the 2nd throw, there was definitely a mindgame Daigo was going for. You'll notice Daigo stand at an outside range where its impossible to get in on Chun (without jumping or taking a crazy risk like double dash), and then he starts slightly walking forward and back. Daigo definitely knew Justin wanted to just raw super there, and was buffering the motion.

Justin really should of just stayed back at that raage, and wait for Daigo to go in on him, but nobody can really blame him for going for it.

Yup. it was the decision making the planning and the strength under pressure that made that moment godlike., not as much the mechanical aspect, though that was definitely on point.

I stand by my claim i made over a year ago, that the first person to bring out Jill successfully and bring her to the forefront of UMVC3, is going to be known as a mechanical god of fighting games for years.

That character requires insane input speed and split second decision making, or she's utter trash. its insane i love it.

A buffer system is just a cop out to make lazy play possible. Fighting games are always an advanced RPS game. Parry lets you do more clutch plays and hard reads.

You have to parry high/low so you defeat parrying by making opponent guess attack height (and unlike with blocking you can't lowparry high attacks). Also throwing.
Americans don't like to use unblockables, it is considered not honest. You press a button at the wrong time and hit the other person, you are random, not a top player. You DP Sim's far fierce, it is random and not honest.

That's an oversimplification.

buffering also allows for otherwise impossible actions. buffering a throw tech and a crouch block simultaneously gives a defenders advantage that wouldn't exist otherwise. being able to cover two of four options rather than only one lets you sacrifice your defense in certain area (such as to the air game) to reset a bad situation in the ground game. Buffering allows somewhat lazy play as a side effect, but the good it does is far more important to the development of the game.

allowing parrying instead of buffering creates the opposite problem, with no buffering but only parrying you could cover every option by backing up and parrying, with the only option to get past the parry being a grab which would cause some serious problems without homogenizing the cast.

claiming that buffering is a pure negative ignores so much. a 2 frame buffering window wouldn't make the game easier unless you could hit 2 frame windows but not 1 frame windows, for example. and 2 frame windows wouldn't be considered lazy. Suggesting anything that makes inputs simpler in any way makes the game lazy or easy is weird to me. IS negative edge lazy to you?
