I hate March madness because when I'm trying to figure out what my football team is doing in the offseason and how spring training is going for baseball, it's all they ever fucking talk about. Also doesn't help that I'm aggressively disinterested in college sports in general.

But basketball is a game of momentum, each game can have quite a few momentum swings, creating really hyped stories well within a single game.

the problem with both sports, which are actually quite similar in a lot of ways, is that momentum games can be really dull.

a good 12-2 run in basketball gets a 10 point advantage early, and then by the end of the half the game is tied or within a posession, the drama of that 12-2 run isn't really existance over the storyline of the whole game. similarly if you get ahead because of a minmized pit strategy by a lap or even two(which are giant leads) if you are redlining but have to stop for a tire swap halfway through you blow all that momentum. the majority of the hook and the drama of both sports happens as time is running out. we only have 10 laps left in the 500, or the last 5 minutes of an NBA game. everyone goes all out and puts everything on the line. that part is great. but sometimes that last 5 minutes is just boring because of a massive lead, and sometimes its close, so the previous 55 minutes or 400 laps haven't mattered all that much.

I just can't get into a sport where points are so devalued.

I watch hockey/soccer/football/rugby and sometimes baseball because each attempted score matters. basketball is well a game of meaningless attempts leading up to a final attempt to get ahead.

How is the fact that a team stemmed an early tide and erased a 10 point deficit not part of the drama? It's definitely not as dramatic as doing it in the final few minutes, but neither is a quick 1-0 goal lead in football, because you can easily rationalize that there's still 85 minutes for the equalizer.

I mean, you can not like basketball, but this is silly reasoning.

Also soccer is exactly what you say about basketball wtf. I'm not even gonna ask what you think of handball with how momentum-based and fast it is, even compared to basketball.

The difference is the difficulty of scoring. basketball each point is almost nothing. you can easily go on a series of 4-2 runs over a quarter or 10 minutes depends on the league, to erase that 10 point deficit. but in soccer you are looking at a swing. it goes from a point down to tied at once. each goal and each attempt is potentially game changing. each shot you take in basketball is significantly less so.

some people may like the game of attrition style of sport, but its not my thing.

Difficulty of scoring would only really matter if it were somehow different for each team(beyond their differences in skill). Like, sure, they can 'erase' the 10 point deficit, or they could fall even further behind, just like a team can equalize their 2 goal deficit quickly, or fall behind 3-0 and look totally fucked.

Sure you can say that each individual scoring point may not be as exciting for the fan, but the game as a whole has no reason to not be as exciting. Your apexes for cheering are the runs or incredible plays, instead of the individual baskets. This can be easily paralleled to the other 'famine' sports, where fans get excited about non-scoring events because the scoring is more rare, and the apex is the score itself.

I prefer college basketball over the NBA but not college basketball over the NFL.

People talk about passion for the game and you can see that a lot more easily in college basketball. In the NFL I'd rather just watch the best players play.

I have a friend that's the same way, it really just comes down to personal preference. I actually think one of the reasons I like football so much is it has a nice balance of difficulty of scoring but it still happening more often than a soccer match.

I like college football better than the NFL for sure. but i have a kinship with my NFL team because i grew up as it did. the jags are only a little younger than me, and all my memories are from when they were forming or later.the kinship i have with the jags and jags fans is a very similar feeling with UCF. and from what i've discussed is totally different from the fandom people have for the phins or the patriots/cowboys/whatever. i didn't watch this past super bowl for example, it didn't interest me. i turned it on for parts, its hard to avoid the super bowl, but i wasn't watching it, really.

its hard to argue that college athletes are unpaid. the free food, housing and living stipend of 2k a semester along with free tuition end up amounting to like 40-50k a year. its not NFL money, but its certainly more than i got paid to go to school. i made about 12k a year in scholarships and stipends, and had to pay 7000 in rent, 1000 in tuititon whatever amount it ended up being in food, and then had to pay for everything else. They make no savings, thats true. but neither do most college students even working the same hours that football players practice.

Lower weight classes are a lot more fun to watch, but I don't take anything away from watching them fight. You can get away with quite a bit of stuff (in regards to technique) in the lower weight classes, that you can't in middleweight to heavyweight weight classes.

lol, px, you make it sound as if they're actually getting an education out of it.

Oliver's (and many others') arguments are based on the relative income of the schools and conferences compared to that of the players.

That's no difference argument than discussing how minimum wage isn't enough to live on comfortably at full time, while executives and owners of McDonalds make millions upon millions of the work of minimum wage employees struggling to get by.

if thats the argument its fine. that stuff is kind of BS and unfair.

but saying tuition/housing/food and 4k a year spending money doesn't count for compensation is implying that these kids would be getting all of that for free without football/sports. which is absolutely false. They get paid. they just don't get paid in cash they get paid in what they would be spending that cash on if it wasn't for the sport they have the scholarship for. College athletes get paid about 15-20 dollars an hour for their effort. its not great. but its better than my job at the bakery i used to pay rent food tuition books and my spending money.

The outrage about "unpaid" student athletes could be transferred just as easily to the struggle of minimum wage employees compared to their corporate counterparts. but that is cold war'd away as un-american.
