Same thing with bikes and helmets, I lose my mind whenever I see someone with no helmet cuz of an accident I had where I shattered my helmet.

When you just start out you aren't even able to go fast enough for a helmet to help at all At slow speed a helmet doesn't really do a lot Unless you really don't understand the concept of falling on your butt. My brother and I spent about 15 minutes on the bunny hill to figure out what the fuck we were doing then said "fuck it, let's go to the top". We tumbled our way down a lot... It was also quite icy that day, so we picked up a lot of speed. And we definitely ended up on a couple trails we had no business being on. I definitely improved by the end of the day, but god damn was I sore. edit - hitting my head was more when I had trouble controlling my direction (again, on a steep enough incline that I shouldn't have been on), and having no real training or instruction on what I was supposed to be doing, I would get turned around, and end up falling backwards down the mountain, resulting in a bit of whip lash and head impact. I deserved every bit of pain I got.
