What do you mean by explain it to you? I like the VA and I like the character so together they work well. It's like how I really like Vin from Mistborn series or Jean from Gentlemens Bastards. A fictional character that just happens to be animated with a voice actor voicing the lines. That's all it is. The more I think about it I think it's just about what mediums you enjoy. If you don't enjoy anime then it's pretty obvoius that you won't understand attachment to characters within the medium much like if you don't enjoy reading fiction you won't really get people getting emotional/attached to characters within novels. | ||

It's not about specific characters, obviously I get that, it's more the specific attachment people have to young cute looking anime girls and the fact that there are entire shows/genres dedicated to them (ie puella magi cause it's the only one I can name I think). I don't understand the specific appeal. I also don't think it has anything to do with me ha ING a child because I didn't understand it before I had him, and I'm sure there are many folks out there with kids who didn't change after they had them. Not sure what having a kid has anything to do with it. | ||

Last year I had pretty shit year myself and actually watched a show called K-ON which was my first real dip into any of this cute girl stuff. It was just fun. Don't know how to describe it, at a time when everything around me was pretty dark just watching some cute girls being adorable was a rather happy thing. The whole Otaku obsession with it is weird to me. They just like any western feel good show I think. Its something you either enjoy or don't and it's not really logical to me why I would like watching it. It is a bit sad how few serious anime there are these days compared to all the moeblob shows. And the 2nd would be moving, too strong again) There's also a side of childishness to it, and it's clearly something that looks "pointless", or brings more dumbfounded reactions as people mature. I think it's amongst the first differences I notice between early-20s people and others more my age or older? But in these media these characters still hover around the same age class, so it doesn't seem "out of place" for them to act that way, or something like that. I'm trying to rationalise it since you ask for an explanation, but it's really hard because some of these things you mention are clearly tropes/stereotypes, and as you become aware of them they take a part of your suspension of disbelief, not just "hey this guy can fly/the gang wants to investigate this shit instead of being afraid and wanting out" but also "well, I know this character will behave this or that way because it's a staple of the genre, I come in knowing it's part of the package so I let it slide". Maybe if I started encountering these only now I'd react differently, but being used to it definitely plays a part and you lack that (not "lack" in a negative sense mind you). Girls und Panzer was also full of bunch of references (Kelly's Heroes, and increasingly explicit nods to World of Tanks, for example) that people could get, which played a part in its success. There's the whole "energetic and adorable people doing stuff with gleeful abandon" but it doesn't explain everything. Plus, the whole silliness of having mock tank battles as part of the curricular activites if typically what would leave Wave dumfounded, methink. | ||
