Cheep is staff on TL, I'm not sure if that gives him power over all the sites or how things work out. Varies from country to country. Eg. in Germany, until only very recently Turks who had lived in Germany for generations were still not qualified to become naturalized citizens, whilst anyone with "German blood" could become German citizens quite rapidly. And the issues that the UK/France faces in regards to Muslim populations and immigrants is peculiar relative to the rest of Europe. But in general: workforce discrimination; there's quite a large corpus of work examining the effects having a "Muslim" name on your resume has on your chances of being called back for an interview in Europe (similar studies have been done for "Black" names in America). With identical resumes, well, you get the idea. There's been more extensive tests outside of that (eg. race, "accent", and other such factors for work/housing) but yes, there is an unspoken discrimination in these areas. Not only in Europe (and it gets quite bad in other places), but that's one issue. There is an opportunity gap. The other is generally immigration policy (Ive made the joke about Fortress Europe several times in this thread at least), police work (Arabs in France probably feel like Blacks in Urban America, for instance; 00's race riots etc.), urban planning (effective ghettos for poor minorities), etc. If you're interested in the comparison, I'll actually link a recent publication from one of my former professors. http://www.upenn.edu/pennpress/book/15288.htmlOn January 08 2015 02:56 wei2coolman wrote:On January 08 2015 02:50 Scip wrote: So what do you think we need to do in order to integrate muslims better into our society LT? That's one part of it. Hate to be the voice of reason, but it's not a religious thing, it's a socio-economic thing. A large portion of Muslims tend to still live in non-modernized developing countries, therefore their baseline of moral compass tends to be more conservative, and thus extremism tends to be over represented in their community. You can see the same metric take place in more conservative southern states vs the more progressive states in the USA, and how they played out. There's a reason why big city states, and big cities tend to be far more progressive, while rural areas tend to be far more conservative. Similarly a large chunk of the Muslim community has been stuck in 3rd world countries, thus their faith tends to be far more extreme. No. While yes the factors are primarily socio-economic in why Muslims in Europe are radicalizing (emphasis on social), the rest of it...no. That perpetuates the stereotype that Muslim nations are primarily third world countries. Anyone who has been anywhere NEAR the Gulf States can attest to that. Whilst they're more prone to hold conservative views, THAT DOES NOT MEAN CONSERVATIVE=RADICAL OR MILITANT. That's something that has far more complex roots. For instance, the majority of Muslims in France live in cities or the surrounding suburbs. How does that fit with your half-assed explanation "urban=liberal rural=conservative" (which is generally true, but has no relevance here)? Like ISIS. That's a result of the Iraqi government post-Occupation effectively disenfranchising Sunni in the country after the US left, both politically and economically, which lead to, well, things. Radicalization and militancy doesn't root itself in just being poor/conservative. You can be a liberal or socialist militant/terrorist, you can be a conservative militant/terrorist. We can find plenty of examples of both. That's why I made a point of saying "over represented", doesn't mean that every muslim in 3rd world countries are extremists, but on average their moral compass tends to be more conservative to their modern counterparts. But that means nothing! The issue is why Islamic youth in Europe are radicalizing, because that's an entirely separate issue from ISIS (which does draw upon radicalized youth from the developed world, mind you) or anything else that happens in North Africa or the Mideast, and has nothing to do with "conservative" views. People hold conservative views all the time, but that doesn't mean they'll shoot Obama or someshit. No, but they would shoot JFK and Reagan. As far as Islamic radicalization in Europe I wouldn't know enough about the attack or context of Islam in Europe to comment on it. But, I was mostly talking about the general Western views on Islam as a whole. Also, America went through the same thing in civirl rights movement though, with the adoption of Islam in a large chunk of the African American communities back in the 60's and 70's. Just interesting parallels. And I can talk about left-wing terrorist acts.
We're not going to get anywhere here if we do however, because the issue isn't the flavor of terrorism, it's WHY people commit terrorist acts.
And yes; marginalization leads to an increase in religious fervor. If we look at the original Nation of Islam platform/tenets, they were pretty damned anti-white.

France/UK/Spain/Italy are where this issue is particularly "hot".
On January 08 2015 04:08 Scip wrote: so how do you think things like the unequal job opportunity could be adressed LT? I mean clearly it's a really difficult issue (as nobody has solved it yet) but what would be the general approach? That's a difficult question, and it's not just job opportunity. On that issue, you need to address that they're 1) poor which means they're going to have less opportunity that someone rich, 2) they're typically isolated in racialized urban/suburban ghettos (or effective ghettos), 3) employer discrimination based on "Arab" or "black" etc. traits.
It's not just employment; for the 2nd/3rd generation Muslim youth growing up a Parisian banlieue (which is generally the target demographic for radicalization, and for ISIS recruiters currently), they've grown up in an environment where they've been disconnected from wider French society, either passively (by being segregated in a largely ethnic neighborhood) or actively (police brutality against minority youth, etc). This involves everything from how the police treat them, how politicians talk about them, and onwards. There's quite alot of issues that would need to be addressed here.
